What do we think of having a 15-minute rule of sorts? basically mandating people to wait at least 15-minutes before pinging any subject helpers.
I've noticed that people tend to ping helpers right away, which is kinda annoying. More often than not, helpers or someone who can answer the question is already in the chat, or it on their way to the chat and can reply soon, they dont really need to be called into the chat. It's kinda a waste of time when all helpers get pinged when theres already one helper there helping out.

Also, a lot of times people find the answer to their questions in some time, in which case, the helper ping is a waste. People just end up deleting the ping, and helpers get confused and frustrated when they come to the chat and don't see a message for them.

Also, considering how many helpers we have, we dont really need to notify ALL of them when only one (or a few) of them are needed to answer the question

I agree, you shouldn’t be allowed to ping a role for help with a question unless your question has gone unanswered for more than a certain period of time. I would even be ok with like an hour or something.

this is a fairly standard rule on most servers offering help of some kind and i definitely think this is something we should consider implementing

I think we could just add it to the channel description and then politely warn people once about the rule when they ping too early and only make a deal about it if they do it multiple times

One thing ive noticed is that other "helping servers" i'm in have a similar rule, but they dont have a consequence for breaking it. we just use a bot command that posts the rule and hope that people dont continue violating it. That server isn't as big as this one, and there aren't as many helpers as here, so it isnt as big a problem. But here, we might want to have some form of consequence. Else, there is no real point in having the rule

We’re not looking to actually punish people, the bot warning is more of a way of keeping track of who we’ve tried to politely tell to not do it in case anyone decides to do it multiple times

On small servers I just memorize all the users so I don’t need a bot to maintain it but here there’s just too many 😦

what you do is still fine, because you posted the questions for the weekly challenges 1 week before you ping, i.e., >= 15 mins for example

so, if I post something that needs a helper's attention, maybe a question or a text to be corrected, I wont tag the role immediately because there could already be some helpers in the chat working on my question. I'll instead wait a few minutes to see if I get a response, and tag people if theres nothing

I'm refering to situations like this one where the role was pinged within 2 minutes of posting the question. 2 minutes is not a reasonable amount of time even for people already in the chat to post a correction response

Seems like an okay use to me. Someone posted a question and wanted to make sure that people with the English Helper role were aware of its existence. Not everyone monitors the channel 24/7, so some folks put on that role so they can get pinged on demand. If someone doesn't like being pinged frequently, they can always remove that role

Mhmm true, but the difference is that the bots we have right now make kinda hard things easier. For example getting a sample of what a word sounds like in a particular accent. There are tons of videos out there and not all of them are good to learn from. It can be fairly subjective. But unit conversions? Its fairly objective, you wont get a bunch of different conversions and it is just to be on the same page instead of actually learning. If anything, I think a bot posting the conversion in the chat in the middle of a convo could interrupt the ongoing convo.

The idea of fewer participants is because it is much better to practice a language in a small group, especially if you are a beginner.
People tend to be shy, so if we create a channel with more participants, only native speakers and advanced people who can follow a very fluent conversation would end up talking.
What we can do is to create more channels with the same minimum number of participants

What we can also do is to increase the 3 beginner channels to 6 participants

I think they used to be, but it actually completely prevents people under 18 from accessing the channel no matter what unless they change their birthdate in discord (I don’t even know if that’s possible).

So we left it as just a viewer discretion kind of thing where people judge for themselves whether they want to go in. Note we call it NSFW but we don’t actually allow anything other than educational questions, so no NSFW pictures, video, or audio usually for example.

No.

The thing is, if your native tongue is Spanish you can't take a Spanish dialect role, nor can you take an English dialect role if that's your native tongue.

In your case, however, since you are neither a Spanish nor an English native, you can take any of those roles.

What Vidis () is explaining is that you have different type of roles here in the server: Native roles, that gives information about your personal characteristics and skills (yours are "Other Native" and "Italy"). Then you have the Learning roles that inform people about what you're learning (for example "learning Spanish", "advanced English", "Argentinian Spanish".
Then there are Special roles that are for special occasions or events that happen in the server ("movie squad", "events", for instance...) and, lastly, Custom roles that are just to mess about and don't mean much.

Sadly, flags are only for countries whose population speak either Spanish or English natively. So you can't have them in your role

And you can see all self assignable roles with the following commands, let me know if you need help

We used to have emojis on all the flags but now it’s only on the Spanish and English speaking countries so the extra roles don’t override the language country roles

For example, before the nitro boosting role got an emoji, the Japanese flag used to override by USA flag, but it’s better to show the USA flag so people can see what kind of English I speak when I answer questions
