What if players could build a ship from a starting ship core instead of from a starting hull.

The hulls have the sailing system attached to it. You can still build custom hull around the startting hull

i'd love this but many people probably won't understand how to use it

true, but that should not be an obstacle. Most core concepts wouldn't be grasped by people without explanations.

I think it's an interesting thought which deserves to be explored ๐Ÿ™‚ OR somehow develop a way to at least be inside the hull. Right now that part of the ship is not even accesible which is in itself kind of crazy considering it's size.

There would need to be one for each hull type so that they still have the varying speeds but then you could have a teeny tiny ship with the fastest hull speed ๐Ÿคฃ otherwise it would need to be a single set speed maybe somewhere in the middle like the regular ship hull speed

true. I think the current format would be flipped haha

Yeah if the Devs could find a way to implement hollow hulls for most of the ships and have it exclude the seawater then that would be a massive improvement

steep knoll

Did sea of thieves manage that? Yeah right?

covert citrus
#

I believe so

#

Well they are hollow but I think they are just super tall so the area you go in is still above sea level?

not sure, what engine does ylands run on again? It is unity! ๐Ÿ˜„

Yup and SoT is Unreal

I'm going to be fair tho, building around a hull is not exactly the most player-friendly way for people to achieve interesting creations. To me the building possibilities in this game sometimes feel more like something that happens to be that way because it was the path of least resistence for the devs. Almost like an unintentional side effect. I think the real problem behind the question for ships not requiring hulls as we know it is simply the challenge for the average player to build something pleasing, intuitively.

The requirement for a hull is an obstacle for people because most objects in the game don't really fit with the provided placement grid and people are kinda left exploiting the system by cramming blocks in all kinds of positions. Hence the clipping issues on many blueprints.

I think that's a serious issue with Ylands anyway. It has such interesting possibilities, but at the same time it feels rough I suppose.

Exactly, after nearly 2000 hours in Steam version plus the alpha before it, I still haven't tried building my own custom ship. I'm not good at building and have only gone as far as adding an ugly cube shelter and containers to a stock ship hull ๐Ÿ˜…

dogbless I try so hard to build interesting stuff in this game, but navigating it all within the limitations is so incredibly time consuming and frustrating.

Custom tools are indeed a great thing, although also they feel very flawed. At least mine stop working often. It would really mean something if they curated those tools like I've seen in the game Teardown. like featured tools and mods and the like. There is an absolute charm to the game and editor though. But it does sometimes feel like paint compared to the creation systems in other games.

Custom tools made by players helps make things easier at least

But yeah, a bit more forgiving shipbuilding and somehow the ability to combat the clipping in complicated builds would go a long way in making the ship-building more accessible

It would be interesting to have the option to use a starting core. I know that me personally always end up building around the current hulls. This ends up with a lot of unused space.

#

But with a starting core It would give a lot more room for creativity

Absolutely it would, they'd have to implement certain limitations like the ship speeds and such but it would be cool to have more flexibility to build smaller ships
