Any cases I've seen where it would come in handy can be solved with inheritance. Although in some setups it might not be the way to go, however other plugins such as conditional events can help out with re-adding users on login to the default group too if inheritance isn't a good idea. That's what I suggested in the past and seems to have worked out.

Has LuckPerms been exploited/hacked?

Most certainly: no. In most cases a 'LuckPerms exploit' is a simple case of human error, which can be avoided easily. Look below for some tips to be on the safe side.

Don't give random people full ( * ) permissions / admin permissions

While this should be obvious, a lot of times a exploit can be traced back to faulty permission settings. You should always take your time with permissions and read the plugin documentations. In 99% of all cases the plugins have documentations explaining each permission, in the rare case that the plugin you are using does not have a documentation, you could still:
A: Ask the plugin developer for help
B: Use LuckPerms verbose functionality ( !verbose )
C: Select a different plugin with proper documentation.

Do not run your server/network in offline mode

If you are running your server or network in offline mode, hackers have it really easy to steal your, or any other admins identity. While the server is in offline mode, certain checks ( which exist to prevent exactly this ), are being skipped, and the server does not verify if the person joining actually is the person they claim to be. While there may be plugins which increase the security of offline mode servers by adding things such as admin codes, you should just switch it to online to prevent the issue in the first place.

Do not download plugins from shady websites / sent by friends

You should never put anything on your server which has not been downloaded by yourself from official sources. Plugins can be infected with malware which injects itself into all other plugins, and thus is hard to remove. While it may look like a plugin has been hacked, you most certainly downloaded a modified version of it and it is not the plugin authors fault. In case your server has been infected by such malware:

1. Stop the server
2. Delete all plugins in your plugins folder, and just to be safe also the server jar file
3. Re-Download all plugins and server jar files from official websites such as SpigotMC or official plugin websites ( luckperms.net for example ).
4. Check if there have been any modifications to the permission system and remove unknown users and wrong permissions.
   if you follow these steps you should have a clean server by the end, without exploits.

Possible reasons why no permissions work:

• Another permission plugin such as powerranks or permissionex is present ||(you can not run two permission plugins!)||
• You only have luckperms on bungeecord/velocity and you tried to assign a spigot/paper or backend plugin permission. Note that the bungeecord version of LuckPerms is incapable of handling permissions on your subservers. Likewise, LuckPerms on the subservers can not take care of bungeecord/velocity permissions.

Possible reasons why certain permissions don't work:

• The permission added is incorrect ||(The devil is in the detail, check spelling!)||
• A second permission is needed ||(This is often the case with warps and kits and things that have subcategories. You likely need to give the basic kit/warp permission AND another one that defines which kit/warp the player can use. It's not always one command for one permission!)||
• The permission you added is actually a command such as /shop instead of shopplugin.shop.open ||(Don't add /shop into your editor! Commands are not the same as permissions. Furthermore, they can look very different, meaning a shop permission does not necessarily start with the word "shop".)||
• You have 2 plugins for the same thing and the permission added is from the recessive plugin. ||(For example you have essentials installed and give vanilla permissions - this will not work as essentials overwrites vanilla commands and therefore, the permission from essentials is checked, not the vanilla one. If this is the case for you, please ask essentials staff how you can stop essentials from overwriting these commands.)||
• The permission changes were not saved to the game if done via the editor. ||(Remember to hit "save" in the editor at the top right!)||
• You keep using the same editor window and use /lp applyedits <code> over and over. ||(Read the popup! You are supposed to get a new /lp editor once you used the applyedits command and sudden deletion of permissions as you may experience right now is exactly the reason!)||
• The user in question is a bedrock user and you did not enable allow-invalid-usernames.
• The user doesn't have the group which holds the permission. ||(check with /lp user <user> info) Remember that groups can inherit permissions from other groups as well, depending on how you set it up. Did you maybe cut the inheritance tree off somewhere by accident?||
• When done via command, it can easily happen that the last argument slid into the server context space (person/group x now inherits permission x in context server x) which will cause the permission to not work unless the context matches. You might want to open your editor and check if the node you just added accidentally got context and remove it if it wasn' intended.
• You used /reload or plugman, which ultimately just broke LuckPerms. Restart your server.
• Sometimes, permissions aren't everything. For some plugins, you must first enable something in their config. Check if that's the case.

Possible reasons why only wildcards work

• Configs generated ages ago (did you revive an old server?) may have a flipped setting for which the internal workings were changed and now have an incorrect default value. Check that apply-default-negated-permissions-before-wildcards is set to false in your LuckPerms config. (https://github.com/LuckPerms/LuckPerms/commit/cd496fdc39447dbad3d29f152bfe3e464d72c9bb)

Possible reasons why only permissions with server or world contexts work
Maybe you changed include-global, include-global-world, apply-global-groups or apply-global-world-groups to false. Make sure you understand what those settings do. They all default to true and shouldn't be changed unless you have good reason to.

Random question, out of sheer curiosity and not in any practical sense whatsoever, but is anyone familiar with the custom storage provider stuff in luckperms?
I've seen some stuff relating to it in the code, but I feel slightly confused about how it would be used, as it only seems to be in the common module and not in the api module - and requires a reference to the internal LuckPermsPlugin interface, amongst other internal references, so I'm just intrigued how that would hypothetically be used.

It's more just curiosity because those two classes aren't used in the abstraction tree for the regular storage implementations.

They seem to exist to open a hook into the storage system of some form, and there's even the separate CUSTOM enum value in StorageType which is detected by the StorageFactory which then invokes the provide method of the CustomStorageProvider interface, which seems a lot like it's designed for external hooks

I might be totally wrong though it could be designed for internal purposes somewhere but I haven't found anything yet

Hey I'm changing Dedi's and my old one is expiring today and so I'm backing up my files before my new one comes in. Should LuckPerms keep data? It's in a MySQL database but I'm going to have to switch the database so I'm just asking because I can't afford to lose that

Just do the export command, and save a copy of the file it creates

/lp export

Then copy the file to the new server, then once you have the database setup on the new server, do /lp import <file name>

LuckPerms does not perform any chat/tablist formatting of its own!

LuckPerms only acts as the source for prefixes / suffixes, it doesn't actually apply them. You need an appropriately configured chat/tablist formatting plugin for them to be displayed. If the values appear correctly when you run /lp user <user> info, LuckPerms is doing its job!

If you aim to sync permissions/groups/userdata, you only need one remote database. where it is, lp doesnt care as long as it cann be conntected to.

Being able to assign perms to a mockBukkit player would be super convenient.

Testing hundreds of permissions manually before every beta release is incredibly tedious.
