so i have ranks perms prefixes and weights setup yadda yadda
but when I set my rank to mvp (weight 2, inheriting vip which is weight 1) with the prefix also being weight 2, it displays... the rank above it's prefix..
and this happens with 0 other ranks just this one

Make sure you set up your inheritance in the correct direction, LP won't just randomly pull a prefix from a completely unrelated group.
If you've checked that & confirm it looks correct, can you please run /lp user <username> meta info for a player affected by this & send a screenshot of the output here

Ignoring bots, actual humans getting banned is pretty rare, yeah.
Personally I try to use bans as a last resort in support servers - even if someone is being dumb right then, they still might need actual help at some point later, and I don't like to close that off for people if I can reasonably avoid it.
Honestly any moderation beyond a warning is pretty rare here (again ignoring bots), even though there's a ton of members here, only a very small number actually chat much beyond when they get their question answered

Just to get back to the root discussion. You always have to try to have the least possible stuff running as root. Cause if there is a leak or a problem which compromizes the security they wont have access to the whole system. A minecraft server does not need to be run as root to function. Its like giving every player OP in your server and saying "but it works".
Root should be inaccessible for anyone at all times. Just use Sudo to get privileges for a specific command if the account doesn't have permission to do something.
And even ssh and rsa keys dont prevent people who know what they are doing from getting into your server by abusing a leak.
