graphics programming is difficult in general, but things like Vulkan and DirectX 12 hide less about the process from you

so while they're more complicated and there is more code to write to get you started, it's worth it in the long run

OpenGL does "too much" for you which limits what you can actually do with it

I think more than anything, just having a project that requires you to learn these things does wonders for your motivation and ability to take in the knowledge
