Will mooks with guns be more like ranged variants of existing mooks, a.k.a. reusing sprites to be more efficient, or have their own sprites?
Cuz like, I could see the "Unarmed Goons" working pretty well with those relatively weak (By gun standards) .38 revolvers seeing as they're also the weakest mooks in the game.
But then they wouldn't be unarmed anymore

The 2D Artstyle, the whole Pulp Comic setting, and the Melee focused combat in a FPS
That also makes it a bit harder to promote this game, because it's easier to talk about a game if you can compare it to others in the market

One of the things I have to give Monolith credit for is them putting scares in Condemned and FEAR that maybe like 5% of players will find.

Nothing like having one of your friends coming up to you like "Hey did you know that at the beginning of Condemned if you go into the building and go left into the corner and peak through this crack in the corner there is a creepy ass motherfucker watching you?" and I'm like "WHAT!?!"
the eyes on the walls, the writing, I wanna know what pushed them to do that shit, and wait WHAT
Yeah as soon as you enter the building you come to this hallway right? And if you instead go left instead of following the police dude with you, you can go to the right corner at the end of that hall and look through this crack and there is this scary dude who is peeking around the corner and if he sees you he ducks behind the wall.
There was also this Jankowski scare in FEAR that only triggers if you go to this one dead end corner on top of a building and go all the way to the end.
Horror games need to do this kind of stuff more often. I want scares that only a fraction of your players will ever see. It's cool and makes the scares less predictable after the first playthrough when you do that.

Here is a snippet of some music, I am working on for Aces... To further player immersion, I have actually done a few variants of this. The beginning of this is the base variant (while you wait for the enemy to show up), the tension builds as they get closer, then a tense string chord is played as they enter attack range. This part is still where you are not quite detected. The stabs in the low brass and strings indicate the enemy might be aware. Then the chatter in the strings, with timpani shifting pitches, and bass drum. The drum I try to make it to where you can't anticipate where it will hit to further the uneasy nature of the encounter.

Thank you so much! To answer your question, I really just make the kind of music that Trey and I like (a lot of John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith, Lalo Schifrin, David Arnold, Ennio Morricone, etc.). Simplified answer is I just sit here and play a lot of bad ideas until I hit a good one lol
Yeah! I am all about the music adapting to the player and so I try to figure out the many ways a player might approach a situation.
I separate different parts of the piece so that way the programming can just play them when players trigger certain situations. Music will be sneaky, yet tense sounding if you decide to allow some goons into the room while you wait from the shadows to deal some god crazy 😃

I recently played a different game with an amazing combat system, that despite being super different to Fallen Aces really spoiled me and caused me to try pulling off super elaborate and complex combos in FA that unfortunately don't work.

Alright so, have you ever heard of the game SIFU? It's a very difficult martial arts game set in an undisclosed modern day Chinese city.
It has some pretty elaborate combos to use and the combat system overall is very robust and engaging, but its complexity spoiled me hard because now in Fallen Aces I keep trying to mix up my attacks to perform bootleg combos and it doesn't always work out.
Stuff like throwing a prop at a mook, rushing forward to kick them while they're stunned and immediately dashing back for the inevitable retaliation from their buddies.

geforce now is a cloud gaming service like the other person said. you don't have to download anything it runs in your browser. basically you can run any supported game that you own on a one of nvidias pcs and it streams it to your computer
so for example i own ultrakill on steam but its not mac compatible
so i use geforce now to run it nicely
there are some downsides
for example your computers specs dont matter at all but you do need a decent internet connection
and if you get the free membership
your "session time" is limited to an hour
it kicks you out (you can just reenter though)
Looking for feedback on melee combat. Is there anything that we could do better or make more interesting? I've have had some people say combat isn't fun or is too easy, or that it feels stiff.
Some things we want to add is more attacks and behaviors for enemies like blocking and kicking.

i've realized from the gameplays i've seen that some people will just spam light punches, not saying it's their fault
I think some more varied main attacks might help. People seem to not utilize the kick, maybe because they see it as a weak attack. I may have better visual feedback for that if enemies stumble back whenever the kick fails to send them flying

usually being ganged in a corner isn't a problem unless you agro everyone in the building/floor

yeah i like to intentionally not grab the guns because i like the melee combat

yeah, but it's not the only entrance. Plus, there's only like 3 dudes there
you could also use the gas tanks if you have difficulty with the middle section
well fair point but if you anger the main bar guys then the only real retreat point would be there
because every other room just has more enemies
you could also throw shit around either at them to damage or nearby to space them away from each other for a more stealthy option
if all else fails, run to a shadowy area and wait until they calm down
then try to pick them off
well that's already what i do but as a general improvement to combat, some ways to get out of a tight space would be good
like what if mike could charge up a kick like a punch
then it could clear a path in a large swarm
idk that would be a little derpy for me, unless you mean sending a goon flying and they all fall like bowling pins

I'm thinking about adding some factors to enemy behavior like if they are low on health they will block more and stay back instead of being more aggressive.

although a non-combat change that i think would be good is not having the gas canisters explode from just throwing them
because all too often i have held the f key just a bit too long and suffered the consequences
i think they should still be damaged from throws
so the gas leaking animation will play and then they actually explode

well just so it behaves the same way it does when getting hit with anything else
because somehow i find it hard to believe that a pressurized gas canister immediately explodes when hitting a wall, yet does not immediately blow up when getting hit with a bullet

Yea read on twitter that Trey admitted the build was held together by tape and woodglue
I mean, it's not really meant to be played on a laptop. There is a little bit more going on besides just sprite work. Each frame of a sprite is about 5 times bigger than doom and each rotation for a sprite could have up to 30 or more frames depending on the animation. Some of the texture files are pretty large as well. But the demo was just that, a demo. We'll be optimizing a making the game better as we move forward towards early access. Obviously we'll get feedback from QA to polish the combat and AI and listening to player feedback on what does and doesn't work, like what we did with the demo update.

using your dukes on one or two guys might get the job done, by a trusty pipe or baseball bat might be better for crowd control.
But each weapon has diff reach, damage and speed. So ya kina gotta figure out what works best for ya.
Just use a tommy gun. Infinite range, instant kill (on headshot), and ludicrous speed. Just don't talk about ammo though
it would be neat although probably unlikely if you could find tommy guns with regular and drum mag variants
or if the ammo count altogether was randomized
then it might not be the fits all solution to completely wiping the moth and flame clean

Actually, seems like a nice idea.
The ones that you find in secrets(like most of the guns in demo) will always be full.
However, guns dropped by enemies(like Malone's pistol) may be half-empty when you pick them up.
or to better balance the tommy gun
make it jam occassionally
because drum mags are horrendously inefficient

I really hope melee weapons influence your attack range in the final game.
Imo it's fine for a fist, a bottle or a switchblade to not reach very far, making you have to almost hug your enemy to make the most out of them.
But longer melee weapons like a pipe, a frying pan or a plank should reach a wee bit further.
And the big two-handed ones that Mike leaked, like the fire axe or baseball bat, should totes allow you to hit a mook from a decent distance.
Actually, that gave me an idea. Pool cue, which Mike could use as a spear to hit enemies.
