Yeah while action Doom is pretty and has lots of weapon variety it's really stiff and awkward, you have absolutely no way of avoiding damage because you have to get really close to enemies to hit them. All the weapons have about the same range too.

IMO, Condemned's combat, while simplistic, worked for it because it felt good and it was only one aspect of a relatively short game

Aces works like that. You can only raise your weapon briefly to block. Dif weapons have longer block times. Reason being we wanted you to time your blocks rather than holding it up the air the whole time,

But yeah aces has the option to punch enemies if you are out of weapons.

So you have the ability to kick enemies away too if they crowd you too much. Kicking doesn't do much damage but can be useful when enemies are kicked into environmental hazards.

We have weapon durability and while some may groan at that, there is a good reason for it. It's to urge you to use weapons around the environment more, since most things can be picked up and used as weapons we didn't want players to just stick to one thing the whole game because that would get rid of the challenge and make the combat kinda boring.
