I've finally downloaded a ton of Dusk custom maps and I'm going through them
I really liked the level of detail in it, very tight experience
never got lost, plenty of engaging encounters
derailed was one of the first custom maps ever released btw
just the right amount of ammo
american nightmare is so based, i must admit tho i havent played the updated version

very fun campaign with a ton of effort in it
feels very at home with dusk, like lost levels

if i were to recommend maps, i'd say (in no particular order) the ones that stand out the most to me are probably
Shadow of Strelok
Black Industrial Misery
Duskstein is a fantastic map that doesnt get talked about but idk if it's playable
I really like Taiga, very underappreciated but fun level albeit a bit on the "newbie" side
Bad hospital is the most technically advanced one probably, very impressiive especially once you play a bunch of "standard" maps
Old waters is another cool underappreciated map with a nice twist to it
i REALLY like Frostbite as well
and an honorable mention to Lower
AVOID: Criadus, horrifically unbalanced to be borderline impossible to play on purpose
map Jams are also worth trying
and if ur any interested, my proudest map is prolly Insomnia (jam spring 2021) and Trespasser as a close second

It's a bit of an excuse, but I also have a problem with my mouse. I was using a Razer Naga, but eventually it started having problems; the cursor would freeze, the right click stopped working. So I ordered a new one, which shipped to the wrong address. Then I ordered another one. It was stolen in transit. Then my brother sold me his old one, but its not working. So right now I'm using some off-brand gaming mouse that's set to some weird sensitivity
lol who knows. But I've spent almost $300 on this problem.

cant compete with my highly detailed trees 
tbh they probably look better cus they have shadows
dusk trees dont have shadows? I never paid attention to that kind of stuff when I played it
they do, in vanilla
when you use them in the sdk, you're placing them down as entities in a .map file to be compiled into .bsp, not as meshes in a unity project
the lightmapper only takes the brushes into account when lightmapping, so you wont get any shadows cast by entities, like enemies, pickups or in this case, trees
I see
it's theoretically possible to merge the models into the BSP before lightmapping but I don't know if there are any tools out there to do that currently
I just painstakingly recreate the trees from dusk with brushes.
Because they look pretty horrid with no shadows. I never did figure out how to affect them with lighting though.

you can find all the textures in the sdk build of the game, just opt into it - the instructions are in pins
once you do that and download it, navigate to Dusk -> SDK -> mnt -> local -> dusk -> textures
they should all be there

Alright gang. In the past I've only stuck to the games base textures when mapping (and I used a texture wad from Makkon in the Quake discord once), but now I'm looking into making my own textures.
But I have zero clue how to take the PNGs that I've made in Photoshop and import them into trenchbroom to use (or how to put them in a wad to use in TB). Can someone give me a breakdown on how I would do that? I tried messing around with Wally, but it forces it to use Quake's palette.

iirc its trigger_changemusic and you have to give it a property called music with a path to the file like music/arenabattle.ogg (the folder music is in the base mod folder)

Be on the dusk sdk branch on Steam, download the custom map .zip, extract into dusk->sdk->mnt->local, boot up the game, click "modding", enable ur mod, click "apply", then go back inti the main menu, click "campaign", "custom level" and then the desired map

You need a trigger that activates trigger_changemusic
have the "music" key value on trigger_changemusic target a file path to whatever music file is in your mod folder
can be ogg, mp3 or flac files

does dusk support rgb lights? added the _color key in trench but it stays the same when i change it

Is it a baked or dynamic light? For baked colored lights you need to include the .lit file which contains the RGB data
Or you can use Half-Life BSP which has colored lighting built into the file
It should be generated automatically when you use the light tool to light your map
Assuming you're using the ericw tools

before garumin started remaking all the textures i felt like dusk hd was gonna be a goofy troll mod, but now it seems really cool, especially now that im playing northern journey that has hd photosourced textures on low poly geometry, which looks really beautiful
but while what garumin has been making is really faithful to the original assets, the models we saw ages ago in the trailer looked really goofy and out of place so idk how it will all fit

There isn't. You can recreate that setup by copying c1a0.bsp from Half-Life into the game. If you want the music to play, use ericw-tools to export a .ent file for the map and then add a music property to worldspawn

i wouldnt recommend entering a jam as your first map anyway
it's settin an unneeded deadline to yourself to what should otherwise be a slow and methodical trial-and-error learning process

Another example of where light styles are used: this room in Half-Life (c1a0.bsp)
The way the old SDK worked is that it would read all of the light styles and just pick the brightest one it found
But it had no support for dynamically controlling them
Which is why that room is still lit in the old SDK even though its default state is dark

the only stuff cannibalized from gloomwood was some texture atlassing code that ended up being mostly replaced

Anyone know how to replace enemy sounds? Been trying to change the rat alert sound to Cancer Mouse saying “Oh hey, Civvie!”
Look for the rat sound in the sdk build. Take your youtuber sound file, make sure it's the same filetype, rename it to be the same as the rat sound, then replace the physical file

i put all the .wad files that mod.io told min into "halflife maps" and then all the halflife.bsp into a "maps" folder contained within halflife maps but nopthing is showing up

for dusk hd? Not completely decided on yet, we're considering having multiple separate workshop items, and then a collection that includes them all
