Had an idea for a new difficulty setting, no name yet but here's what i got, it's Basically Ciero Miedo with a few changes:
- Health kits, small and large, are disabled, you can only heal through magic potions.
- Ammo Pickups have their amount reduced by half.
- Certain Enemies (Mages, Welders, Soldiers) can now attack while moving.
- Quick-Saving is disabled, die once, right back to the beginning.
- Mage fireballs now set you on fire.
Fire DOT damage is always annoying in games imo
Also, Welders moving is the only good telegraph for when they've stopped attacking
So I think the Welders thing is a bad idea
I mean them not shooting fireballs is also a good indicator they've stopped attacking lol

They stop shooting when you're behind cover, but pop out and they immediately start again if they haven't moved yet
So them moving is the best opening

look if enemies can be set on fire it's only fair that you can be set on fire too

I'll pretty much always die on the hill that things like ammo restrictions, health nerfing, anything that makes the player weaker as a difficulty increase feels bad to play and ends up more frustrating than fun. But things that buff enemies or become more like a master level that asks the player to build on skills they learned in other difficulties becomes the nicest difficulty increase

Problem with health nerfing is that it restricts stuff like rocket jumping cough cough Quake remaster on Nightmare cough cough

an enemy buff can be as simple as moving and attacking like before, or forcing resistance to a weapon that cheeses it
They absolutely do, it just makes the game feel more boring often
no one likes bullet sponges either unless there is mechanics to taking them down fast
if i were to design a game, i'd make it so that enemies have the same health and attack damage on every skill, and the main changes are their attack speed, projectiles speed, and movement speed

I think drastically changing the mechanics would be poor for a difficulty increase. You want things to build upon what they've learned, and increase mastery of it. It's why duskmare feels so crap imo.

Difficulty modes don't really need to cause mastery so to speak, just change how the player engages the game

Ye, I don't think a game's "difficulty mode" always needs to be a traditional difficulty increase so to speak

in fact i've actually come up with an outline for 5 difficultes on a game i intend on eventually making, here's how it would work:
On easy, Every Enemy moves at half of their normal speed, and can go a full 3 seconds without attacking, also, your maximum health and armour would be increased from 150/200 to 200/250.
On hard, The Speed of Projectiles is increased by 15%, this also affects the attack speed of melee enemies. Enemies will also be in slightly larger numbers in certain areas.
On expert, every enemy has their movement speed and attack frequency doubled, and as brought up before, some enemies can now shoot while moving, certain areas will also have double the amount of enemies
Finally, there's the joke mega-difficulty, exactly the same as expert, except every enemy deals tripled damage.
Double enemies are fun in this type of game
Makes sense. More of side difficulties or modifiers to change a style can be fun. l4D2 did that at times. It's where I wish Duskmare went instead of being "above" CM. I Just assumed a bump up from CM was what OP was going for

oh yeah that reminds me: my game would have an explosive armour pickup, a permanent power up type thing that makes all damage from blast jumping directed towards your armour, no matter how little armour you have
The 50% hp nerf just sounded like it came from someone who didn't really play that much quake. I don't know many people who like it who spent a lot of time in the game

Every attack being a projectile makes the game kinda easy so I need the fast projectiles.

Fun is also very subjective.
While we tend to cry out about the death of insert genre here every once in a while, we've never been in a market more stuffed to the gills with variety and options for everyone. There's definitely issues with reskinned copypastes littering the AAA scene, ridiculous platform exclusivities and so on and so forth, but my backlog is growing exponentially.
There's so many games out there now that I couldn't even begin making a dent in it, even if hyperfocusing on what I'd find fun.

duskworld is a separate program form dusk, so yes that button is supposed to launch duskworld and exit dusk
if its using a linux filesystem, that can go awry easily
also once an app is exited, GFN closes that virtual session

Wil have to try it. I always assumed FPS requires keyboard and mouse.
Call of Duty wouldn't have nearly as many players if that were the case.
I would use some auto-aim. Dusk retains the high speed gameplay when you don't have to worry about your aim as strenuously.

I've been having trouble setting up my controller for dusk.
When I press rt trigger it swaps weapons and then fires

Dusk is probably the best playing fps on a gamepad I've tried in terms of keeping it true to how PC would feel
Call of Duty plays well on gamepad because more tactical, but Keeping games like Dusk and Doom eternal fun on gamepad is more challenging imo
I fixed it by binding prev weapon and next weapon to different keys instead of the mouse wheel
I don't know why the mouse wheel was involved with the rt trigger.
Probably something with linux
if there is anything I've learned from the devs answering things, blame steam

so i know the weapon wheel was probably added for switch players, but i think they should at least add an option to make the weapon wheel slow down time like in doom

it doesn't exist BUT: Most weapons are already centered. The only weapons that "aren't" centered are the regular shotties, the pistols and the AR. Every other gun is centered

You're actually wanting to shoot the rivet at the crest of your jump.
(Or, that works for me, anyway.)
just shoot it down at any point you are in the air
if you are touching the ground it won't push you up at all
but for max height its actually the closer you are to the ground the better

You can use the wall on e2m1 to test
well practice I mean, its what I used to make sure I was getting max height jumps
the closer you time your rivet to when you are near the ground the higher you go. If you wait till the peak of the jump you will still get a good boost but not as much height
it never really matters much tho in reality
makes sense, does crouching matter for extra air time or does it not affect your hitbox in the air?
crouch jumping exists, but I've never seen a use for it on rivet jumps. Maybe if there is just a ledge barely out of reach
could be a neat idea for a trick jump map later down the line
but what learete said is still true tho, a lot of times I just do it at peak because you don't want it to be as floaty. You almost never need a full height jump and the riveter is so fast you can often just fire it again if youre climbing a wall
same goes true for mortar jumps, they're just more awkward because bouncy
My most common use of rivet jumping is mobility in DuskWorld.
A full jump is never required.
- a full jump while moving at max speed feels like RNG because its so picky. I can clear that wall all day while standing. Do it max speed and its like 1/20 tries lol
does proximity to the ground affect more horizontal boosts and jumps as well? or just height
I always just kinda assumed the closer you are to the center of the explosion the more it pushes you, so if you are horizontal boosting off a wall you want to try and be close to it
for boosting horizontally off the ground max height is bad because it floats you and you get less boosts in
so i try to get the explosion to be more behind to push less up if that makes sense
what does that translate to in terms of inputs? like if im bunny hopping diagonally and wanna rocket jump the direction im bhopping, is the input jump, then switch from w to d and shoot to the side and down? 🤔
the most reliable way if youre on flat ground with no walls is just try and flick and shoot down beween jumps but go for low height

anyways, if a dusk 2 were to ever come out, i think it would be cool for it to graphically be on par with a 2004 source game, but with a much more stylized art style, sort of like a darker gothic team fortress 2 with hl2 styled environment textures
Half Life 2 was created with a 40-ish man team, a low team size that was only achievable through Valve's now famous intense headhunting process, and made over a 5 year dev cycle - coming out to about 420,000 manhours of work.
Dusk was like 2.5 people, and one of those exists to make bad takes on twitter.

You're right, there's programing, level design, writting, voice acting, character design, modeling, all sorts of things
Modelling a good 2004-era 3d rigged asset still takes exactly as much time as it did in 2004, generating the assets needed for a good 2004-era level would still take as much time, the music, the sound, I won't talk your ear off because you got the mod thing.
The biggest advancement is just not having to make the engine yourself - granted, that slices the original manhour count in half - but that's still a lot of manhours for an indie team to compete with. 200k ain't no joke. There are 8500-ish hours in a year. You don't got much to work with. Everyone wants to be the next Half Life 2, but Half Life 2 devs weren't no rubes, slapping air to try and grasp the mystical dev tech they were given, they knew what they were doing and were seasoned pros.
Apart from developing Hammer, but we don't talk about that shit.

besides, i think people over state how good hl2 looks, its aged well if you look at it for a few seconds but look at it for a few more seconds and it begins to show its age
the npc models only hold up because of the real faces used for the textures, and the animations which actually do hold up a lot, but aside from that the textures and models aren't as big an upgrade from goldsource as people say
So much, much more effort in the art direction and asset generation, every generation requiring exponentially larger teams than the one before, just for a "eeeeeh isn't THAT big an upgrade from goldsource".
look it doesn't have to look exactly half-life 2, just similar in feel

yes. i am left handed, and grew up playing a lot of pc sidescrollers, so i find it very hard to transition into using wasd, so i just stick with what's familiar to me.
i also use m2 for jump, enter is what i use for alt-fire, shift for crouch, / for flashlight

yeah but it doesn't really have much of a negative effect, it's very quick, plus my keyboards a bit smaller than normal, so there not as far apart
