after playing up to neobabel today from the cutty mines, i see the hype now. gunplay is top notch

@olive cloud I'd wager any of the top 20% of AFPS players would get the same response. been playing a lot of other Arena FPS games, mainly quake live and champions, and looking back at DUSK has made me appreciate how little I really knew about arena FPS games. Even though I can count the number of people who can beat me in DUSK with exactly 4 fingers I'm not even close to the top of the player pool of arena fps games overall.
Really hoping that the game gets an update to bring in some competition and reworks to make it live again.

I can see it becoming genuinely useful in endless, since there you don't get a lot of health recovery items

I've found it useful in tougher custom maps too
yeah if you take less 15 damage a minute on average and keep healing you'll be fine
though that's an average and you could always just eat a bunch of projectiles in a short time window and die

OK i dont think i meant by quickswapping what you all meant
i just meant not sticking to just one gun for each encounter
I don't think the combat would feel as good if you could skip the 'cooldowns' You'd be able to combo way to fast for how low HP the enemies are
and you can already skip the animation for pulling the gun out, so you just end your combo on guns with longer cooldowns
you can still use regular shotguns, crossbow, Rivet, Ar for comboing and use SSG and Hunting rifle as "combo enders"
THe cooldowns are already low for most weapons

On the topic of quick-switching... It's kind of in the game already? Holding your fire button while swapping to the super shotgun already has it fire a volley in rapid succession.
They're talking about the animations after you fire. you can go from firing AR to firing SSG near instantly. But if you go from SSG to AR you must wait for the ssg "cooldown" to finish

Well, the self damage up close with the riveter part of the combo would neuter the SSG somewhat, but yeah quick swap in general would be busted

It's a little more balanced than it seems considering most enemies also die when throwing regular props.
I can tell you from my own experience with attempting Duskmare E1M10 that throwing said soap takes a lot more finesse than what may seem immediately obvious.

I love doom 1, don't get me wrong, but the tension only gets knife-cuttingly thick whenever you get into a hard area. The environment's quality rests mainly in how it dynamically links together and how it lacks blemishes.
Quake only came out 2 years after doom 1, and ties with dusk in everything other than environmental effects (stuff like fog), that being of course because it came out in friggin 1995, when computers didn't have enough power to handle advanced stuff in real time.

there is a need in learning the perfect angle for gaining max speeds on the early jumps and also for rjs and other environmental things that effect speed

YOu only need to hold FOrward and a strafe key while jumping repeatedly
dusk strafejumping is probably one of the easier examples
So literally just hold w and a and spam jump
no mouse movements required. Also the horizontal speed boosts you get from enviormental stuff is so minor that you're basically wasting barrels or gas cans that you could throw on enemies.

I'm not going to tell you how to play the game, but you can go into the game's files and extract the wad directly. From there, you can play any source port. Which opens up many, many, many more wads to play.

for the boss i was able to just bhop around and they wittled themselves down to half health lol
it does look cool but the idea isnt unique
but i dont think that level is intended to be unique

the main reason for no mp is that duskworld on PC is a completely different application than the base game, so in order to reach feature parity we would have to merge all the code into the main game. we may have a solution for it further down the road, but it would add a huge amount of development and qa time which would further delay the game
and we already are like 7 months past our deadline
we're very near to our final version, so launch is in sight

in fact, i built whats effectively the first draft release candidate last night

it needs a few passes of scrutiny before we submit it to nintendo for final approval
pretty pleased with it overall though
i think with the performance improvements and quality of life upgrades its better than the pc version lol
thats probably the thing we're least confident in, as nobody who works here really likes gyro controls, so we arent fully confident that we provided the best possible options gyro players would want
I picked it up on PC awhile back but held off since I saw it was coming to the swonch
we are open to feedback when we launch it, and are more than willing to patch in additional gyro features
we can fully admit we arent experts in the space

Doom is kind of a weird one with the lack of verticality in aiming. Same with Duke.
When I play Eternal or Overwatch I'll usually have the gyro cranked high enough that I can sweep across the entirety of the screen with pretty small movements. Then I'll set the left stick pretty highish so I can flick it and 180. Once you break through that learning curve and find something that works though it's choice
I feel like the mortar should be given to the player outside secrets much earlier

Dusk pros: thoughts on the duskworld weapon/map balance meta?

I feel like the ssg is way more effective than it ought to be
I wouldn't call myself a pro, but I think Duskworld's weapon balance in okay for the most part.
The super shotgun is only reliable up close, which also means your opponent's super shotgun is also reliable. As well as you're opening yourself up (however briefly) to bombardment via explosive weaponry.
i like how the ar and even pistols arent completely terrible

This is because of the way the hr works. In dusk, it fires 2 simultaneous hitscans where you're pointing, which us how it gives the illusion of penetrating multiple enemies
The 2 hitscans deal 50 damage, adding up to 100

yeah my saves fucked now though
the only thing i have that i can use to get back in to the map is a tire
and flipping them to use hop is extremely difficult
plus they tend to phase through the map

the welders fire their projectiles, but those stay stationary and then dissipate after a while
i use hopped in and out of the map for the sword, apparently i broke everything
proceeding to the next level, the welders are still broken

It's find for the most part. Rivet damage needs to be nerfed or there needs to be less rivet ammo on the maps

hey everyone. how does this 'pixel art' effect on 3d models work in Dusk? is it a shader like in Prodeus or just low resolution textures and low poly models?
If by better you mean jumping around the edge of the arena, playing ultra safe, and making the map 2x longer then yes
low resolution. You can look at the textures yourself by downloading the sdk. It's pretty easy to do #dusk-modding
It's not a shader in Prodeus either, they rendered the models out into sprites
and then they just normal map them, similar to what Amid Evil does
