e2ms I really really like too

e2m2 is my favorite level though it lacks as much impact after the first time through. the atmosphere is still phenonenal in that level starting out with no music and ambieance and then building up into a cresendo of violence and music

e1m8 is pretty great and eXM1's all have fantastic introductions E1's kill the intruder followed by a sickle fighting in the span of a few seconds gives you a good first impression of the game.
E2 does something similar with the single pistol(provided you haven't aquired the secret supplies nearby) and a wall of fire coming at you from the welders whilst fighting the soldiers
E3 picks up admirably from E2's end but is now properly introducing a new tool to the player that exists as a secret weapon in prior episodes giving it a slightly more structured feel.

However, the process causes reality to bend and break if not contained, like what happened in the Escher labs. Episode 3, in my understanding, takes place almost entirely in a nightmare like dimension where nothing has to make sense, which is the origin(?) of the crystals

Yea ammo is barely an issue for shotguns. Dual shotguns always felt a bit like no man's land. Less accurate than AR in distance. Less punchy up close than ssg. Still fun tho and nice if you hit multiple soldiers or goats at once.
