#GAME JAM: WarioWare-like with scenes from history

First steps:

  1. Introduce yourself with your skillset (programming? art? music? writing?) Or if you're a novice, what would you like to learn?
  2. Discuss what mechanics you want to do (make a Google doc?)
  3. Decide on a programming language/engine

I can do programming and art!

#

I'm comfortable with python but I'd be down to get gud at unity

hello 👋 I'm a programmer. I'm good to go with python; I've not much experience with game engines.

Hi, I'm a musician. I made some small tunes here and there, but I already have ideas for sound effects and sound tracks.

#

Will we be doing just historical events or like philosophical premises i.e. a micro game where you play as sisyphus rolling the stone up the hill (maybe spamming A to push it up?) And when you complete the game the Boulder falls back down.

snow gate
#

Idea: Separate the levels by the ages. Antiquities, medieval, modern, etc. Each age has their respective micro games. First level animation could be a Greek philosopher writing a book where different historical events and philosophies during that time period are played out.

olive breach
#

that seems a bit far down the line tho, when we have a decent numbers of microgames finished

olive breach
#

then we can extend them

#

programming wise

Sounds good! Probably a good idea to start with something concrete before getting too carried away :)

olive breach
#

im good with either!

sharp temple
# olive breach would you be interested in learning unity with me or do you want to stick with p...

haha I'm also good to go with either option, but I'll be a bit short on time this week and the next - so stick with python to get a quicker start on it? As far as games go, I've never coded anything more than a text-based one, though, so I can't say whether getting the hang of pygame will be easier than unity. And though I'm much more comfortable with raw code than a GUI, I'm not sure how graphical Unity is. I'll try and watch some youtube videos on each to get a better idea of the options I guess

olive breach
#

actually maybe Godot looks better

sharp temple
#

hmm, I've had it installed for the longest time and never got past an intro tutorial, but I remember being pretty impressed with its functionality and ease of use - Godot is certainly more than another possibility!

Although I'm not into coding too much, I still am interested in possibly learning it. A YouTube called Bro Code has hours of classes for different languages that I'm thinking of checking out. Anyway, I'm looking around and it seems godot is pretty good especially for what we plan on doing. Seems like there are a few flaws with its 3D stuff and some 2D sprite editing stuff compared to unity, but I'm sure that isn't going to matter. Overall it does seem up our alley. Here's the article I looked at. https://gamedevbeginner.com/godot-vs-unity-for-making-your-first-game/

Which engine is better for making your first game? Unity or Godot? Decide for yourself using our beginner's comparison guide.

Hey guys, I added a second page to the document where I put down a story idea to help creative juices flow. Here's the first idea I had I found pretty silly and fitting to a wario ware type game:
A philosophy major finishes a book he calls the “Altimate Almanac of Ancient Antiquity! '' or AAAA! for short. (alternate title: Ultimate Almanac of Everything Antiquity and Ideological). He is very pompous about his creation and calls himself the greatest philosopher in the world. As he holds the book up, lightning flashes and Plato appears in his room. He tells the guy that his arrogance will be his demise and that if he truly knows everything old and philosophical, he shall be tested. Plato wiggles his fingers and brings the guy into the book where the game takes place.

#

I'm thinking it's a bit cliched but definitely could work for a rough draft lol

sharp temple
#

haha I love it

#

I'm willing to learn things, but I have little knowledge on actually creating anything. I think I might have some minigame ideas, but I would like someone to flesh out the constraints

#

Warioware games typically last seconds, not minutes. is that the goal or was the name just used as a catch all for all kinds of minigames? both are fine

olive breach
#

seconds mostly

#

warioware does have boss battles that last a couple mins sometimes

#

also, im out at PAX this weekend, so i wont be able to do much until next week!

sharp temple
#

yep I have exams so I'll also be very busy 😅 but my brain will be storming in the background as always

snow gate
#

Good luck! I'm relieved that you guys are still interested and that this didn't just die lol. I'm excited for expanding this game further!

I came up with a few more scene ideas and threw them onto the doc:

#

Cut! you are Alexander the Great, faced with the Gordian knot.
Sink! You are an iceberg, intercepting the Titanic.
Dose! You are Mithridates, drinking poison in increasing increments of toxicity. The wrong order and you die.
Survive! You are Charles VI. Dodge your advisors to avoid shattering into shards of glass at a touch.
Interrupt! You are the person from Porlock. Reach and distract Coleridge before he finishes composing Kubla Khan.
Dispute! You are Martin Luther. Nail those 95 Theses.
Carve! Type CROATOAN before doom descends (a blackness spreading from the edges?).
Kill! You have met the Buddha on the road. You know what to do.
Swallow! You are a big fish and Jonah has been thrown aboard. Swallow him before he gets lost in the ocean's many currents.
Incinerate! You are Archimedes; align mirrors to concentrate the Sun's rays onto the invading Roman ships.
Achieve Infamy! You are Herostratus; set flame to the Temple of Artemis and be remembered forever.
Divide! The empire, long divided, has united. Partition (draw internal borders) and plunge it into civil war.
Destroy! You are Savonarola. Throw (point-and-click? drag?) mirrors, books, cosmetics, sculptures, paintings, instruments, and fancy dresses into the bonfire of the vanities.
Mummify! The pharoah has died, wrap the body with linen bandages.
Enforce! You are Hammurabi. Two men stand before you, one of them missing a body part (eye/hand/leg/ear). Balance the scales.
Deforest! You are Gilgamesh, cutting down the Cedar Forest. Alternatively:
Steal! You are a snake. Wait for Gilgamesh to lower his guard (timing based on animation cue?) before stealing the plant that grants immortality.

These are great! Lol

#

ok ive started to code in godot

#

ie ive started to learn godot

#

the terminology is uses is kind of confusing. prefabs from unity are called “scenes”

snow gate
#

Lol strange. I hope its going well. If anything we can totally change to something else too if it continues to be a pain.

snow gate
#

aight we reviving this who's in

olive breach
#

LOL

so i decided to abandon this because this was supposed to be a highly modular project where different people can make their own minigames. but if there are only two or three coders making a variety of minigames becomes a lot less fun and a lot more tedious
