#trench tales from slop world

Blue glop fo today
so even real chemists do their exothermic reactions in ice baths
i would have thought you'd have some cool science tool for that
love these posts so neat
The soxhlet is running
But no vapor head yet so i wrapped the whole thing in aluminum foil. Looks like baked potato
cute cute
Oh yeah, the physics people had a q about aluminum foil (we want a parabolic mirror for solar cookin')
any good way to smooth it out completely?
de-wrinkle?
Get it as flat as possible and use your nails with firm but smooth pressure. Labor intensive. Only works for small pieces
i love this blog
Inadvertently ripped top off a bottle of flammable stench reagent shortly after this was taken and was so surprised I accidentally stuck myself with a needle
This is what we call raw dogging it
What’s in there?
Phosphines and borane-dimethylsulfide adduct
that's beautiful
Year 3 of my phd and I feel like every day is sweating in pitch darkness
Nothing has changed in 100 years
Lewis died by his own hand in his own lab after an illustrious career, working the same style of high vacuum line our group uses
damn man
I was reading a history of evolutionary theories recently
the book was a 2nd edition of an old text but even this new edition was from 1930
the bulk of it charted the progression towards darwinism and genetics
but it ended by surmising that darwinism had been abandoned after the newer generations stopped considering it exciting or novel
the whole book felt eerily contemporary even compared to a newer history of the life sciences (from 2008) i was reading alongside, up until that point
Nothing has changed in 100 years
Feels like the mark of a "finished story" or maturity
When all that was new is taken for granted
it really isn't though, that is the point
they literally thought darwinism was a failed theory and was all but ready to abandon it
Oh my god its so messy
This is real life
This is after I cleaned up btw
Oh no
Oh okay I get it now

My haters, enemies and critics were vindicated today as EHS made a special request that I clean my hood
Note: I had already done what I thought was cleaning a week ago

These are the funniest posts I've read in a while been smiling when ever I think about them all morning
Entered a trance like state when setting up a reaction today. I was adding a reagent at a rate of 1 drop every 2 seconds to a vial chilled to -78 C in the glovebox and each drop only dispensed when my heart pumped blood into my hands, slightly increasing the pressure
young jeezy-do it for my hood
[2x]
Every time I do it I do it for my hood
And every time I do it I do it for yo hood
And every time I do it I do it for they hood
It's understood I do it for the hood
The streets love jeezy and I love 'em back
If I still had the work I'll front you a sack
It's all gravy still reaching wit my words
And...
gm fellow slopheads
I wish I understood anything about chemistry. This stuff all seems really cool
One thing I like about experimental chemistry is that it is generally possible to understand when the assumptions and details are spelled out, unlike physics and math, where sometimes things never click cognitively
liquid turn pink??
It's dark red now. Like wine
Making new cobaltocenes
The current step is an odd one. Essentially pulled out of thin air by the discoverer. You boil these highly reduced cobalt compounds at 110 C until they encounter another and extrude H2 gas in a bimolecular fashion
It's dirty and not scalable, but it will be enough to proceed.
As promised: the bugout kit
Trophy from a defunct lab. Last safety inspection: '95. But I got fresh filters on another expedition
yummy chemistry juice 🤤
the forbidden sprite
*drinking sprite* haha... yeah... science bitch!!
Opened triflic acid in the glovebox today and it didn't even smoke. My colleague and I run it like ft knox, water levels appear to be in the low parts per million these days
https://carlwillis.wordpress.com/2008/02/20/uranium-chemistry/ Cool yellowcake recipe I found while doing my dinner reading
What do u mean about the water levels comment what dose this relate to
The atmosphere inside the glovebox is supposed to be pure recirculating N2. There is a bed of catalysts inside it that destroys any oxygen or water present, down to <1 parts per million levels under ideal operating conditions
However, most gloveboxes are run dirty and the catalyst bed gets saturated with solvents, catalyst poisons etc and becomes gradually incapable of purifying the glovebox atmosphere to deep <1 ppm levels
Triflic acid is a superacid that reacts violently with water - it spontaneously smokes on contact with trace amounts of water vapor
No because I know exactly where it's been
My lab is full of mercury and I probably have a little on the brain
When a lab shuts down the real scalp takers scroungers and grungers come out
i love it
An example
The rusted 1L drums of poison are a nice touch
LC50 of that shit is 45 ppm/4 hrs in rats
is it when a lab is closing down
i would love to do that but with computer parts or books
Old lab computers are sad and weirdly nostalgic to me
what an absolute dream date idea
I remember sitting and spinning in circles on a rolling chair in a small office in an old building where my dad ran his lab
Seeing all the windows pipes screensavers go by
Tag team expedition
man that's an absolutely gorgeous piece of memory
what kind of old computers did he have
I remember Compaq machines with purple cases
Some ergonomic keyboards which I didn't like because they were hard to play flash games on
aaah blessed
Long since outdated but I think it didn't matter because they were just stations to send jobs up to the cluster
sleeper workstation material
id love to build a powerful computer but use a yellowed old computer case

jupyterlab moments
Here it was mostly me lashing out at the code PLUTO because it would always get me negative densities whatever I did
But tbh it wasn't designed for what I'm trying to do with it, so I guess that's fair

trying out my physical setup on two different codes
one crashes from negative densities, the other outputs NaN
today will be a fun day
pure terror
And I have meeting with my advisors in 4 hours
At least the initial setup is good. But nothing works after 1 iteration
hopefully it's a gross little programming bug and the physics will go smooth when caught
Thing is those physics are hard to capture numerically due to huge density gradients, the fact the first one fails (PLUTO, a grid-based Eulerian code) is not that surprising. But the second has been designed for those kind of physical applications and should work (some of the test problems even involve "worse" situations), so the answer to this bug may be hidden in the setup file I wrote based on the examples
This code is trolling me, I swear. When trying to construct the initial setup of my hydro simulation:
double rho = rhow * pow(r/rmin, -2);
double rho_norm1 = rho * rho0;
double rho_norm2 = rho / rho0;
printf("rho = %e, rhorho0 = %e, rho/rho0 = %e", rho, rho_norm1, rho_norm2);
Outputs :
rho = 5.273156e-17, rhorho0 = 8.819995e-41, rho/rho0 = 8.819995e-41
TIL that in C, multiplication and division work the same

hey chemists
im working on a nomenclature system for describing meme templates, and ive noticed it resembles organic molecule nomenclature
e.g. I'm thinking a simple captioned image can be called 1-caption-1-slot, and a top-text/bottom-text meme as 2-caption-1-slot, and so on
can you help me figure out how to develop this system further? I was wondering in particular whether there are molecules that are structured (in their abstraction) meme templates or comics panels
hmm
It would require a clear articulation of what is naturally the caption and what is the slot
For organic molecules the reference point is also natural. The hydrocarbon skeleton with nothing extra
caption is the text and image is the slot typically, and i understand that this is conventional (and frequently violated as a joke)
Great, now your convention is set
cis, trans, meta, para, ortho and such describe the structure
they're usually used as prefixes
Side text?
how do you synthesize estrogen
maybe they should all be referred to as slots?
google it
I was setting up to make a joke about diying
you could definitely use prefixes to describe the number of slots and their spatial relationship
might make sense to use anatomy terms
ik i was countering the joke by taking it seriously and encouraging you
like dorsal, ventral, etc.
lets leave that for after we figure out the first part
or have a standard for which way things are read
just numbers will do nicely for now since it's gotta be easy to read
I will be looking into it <333
i think expanding brain might be a good example to try to figure out how the naming system would work
yeah good call
here's a closeup of the prototype i think the expanding brain fits into
maybe have terms for describing the general structure, and some term indicating whether pictures or words are present in a specific area
oh also maybe some kind of term for the number of layers and what's in them?
image vs text?
yeah i agree
in organic chemistry there are multiple ways of naming the same chemical structure for some things
but by convention they use certain ones over others usually
main thing is using the longest carbon chain as a base sorta
i think number of panels makes sense as an analogue of that
except it's more of table
so would have 2 dimensions to it
WP-WP-WP-WP-WP-WP-WP or (WP)7
might be able to use vectors as an analogue as well, not sure how well that would work :/
hmmmm it seems like bio chemistry is super wild and I do not have the knowledge of chemistry to approach this but I'll look more
the one that's a bit more simplified
there's another one called a line diagram i think?
where the carbons are just dots and the bonds between them are lines
and then only other elements are represented by actual letters
yeah those might be perfect for describing object labelling memes
hell yeah!!! this is the sort of stuff i wanted you to look up
we should get into biohacking
Bio hacking for good: making estrogen
Bio hacking for evil: making tren
If I did estrogen I'd cycle on and off
Maybe at a low dose also
maybe we can think of a meme as being composed of elements and relations, with elements being either words or pictures and the relations being how slots/panels are connected
yes!
are there any memes like this where the words and images are mixed across the sides rather than being sorted
I feel like there's an entropy joke waiting in there somewhere
like the brain on the bottom tapping into the potential difference (high concentration of brains on one side) to generate power by having some of the brains pass through to the other side and turn a turbine while doing so or something
This would allow for those memes where a situation (characters, whatever) is labeled, it's the relationship induced by the picture that is the skeleton
Pretty good but my favorite is Nesmeyanov

What about Johnny b goodenough?
(I don't think his middle initial is actually b but not sure)
Edit: it's actually John b goodenough, his middle initial is actually b!
When we talk to neuroscience customers, a common request we get is to connect a syringe to a needle with a long piece of tubing in between. For this setup, Hamilton recommends using PEEK tubing and compression fittings to achieve a leak free system.

it's not a dumb question because i dont know either
Not seeing anything obvious in the wikipedia edit history
is there like a slop world wiki where all entries are like this
I am sus of it being a real thing that scientist actually know, HOWEVER, there have actually been weirder real things, so I wouldn't question it either way, fake or real
One of MANY weird things, there is an actual sea sponge named after spongebob. It is "Spongiforma Squarepantsii"
Another weird thing, but not really science based, the dot in a lowercase "i" or a "j" is called a "Tittle"
its just ethanol and they didnt even bother editing the ipa pronunciation

I was hand tightening the Teflon screw inside the glovebox when it ripped in half at the O-ring seat
was it a you problem or an o ring manufacturer problem
The former. Viton O-rings are not rated to withstand the solvent I was using, but FFKM O-rings are >100s of dollars apiece and were globally back-ordered at the time
So I was raw dogging it with Viton

woaaahhh

Starting to wonder if our high vacuum line is a liability
is it constantly under vacuum?
Yep

omg thats so pretty
okay so where are you stuck?
for clarity these are much easier to draw as condensed skeletal structures if you've been taught those yet
have you read the corresponding section in your textbook?
are you able to tell the difference between the carbon chain and the things attached to it?
just trying to see where you're at
- you identify the longest contiguous carbon chain, use it as the base name
- you systematically list off the functional groups in the order that they appear on the chain
in doing so you number the chain so as to keep the functional group numbers as low as possible
first guess not looking at any books or iupac guide or anything is that it will be something like 1,7-dinitro-2,3-diamino-4,5,6-octatrione
do you see how that name sort of agrees with that drawing?
they indicate position on the 8 carbon chain
so this is what the software Chemdraw spits out
Chemdraw presumably is programmed to remember the IUPAC priority rules better than I do
you should review whatever book your instructor assigned to get the relevant ones
in general priority of functional groups is set by the heaviest atoms first to branch off the main carbon chain - in this case the O atoms of the ketones
A book that could be helpful is Klein's "Organic Chemistry as a Second Language". Which is basically what it is - another language with rules
In practice chemists do not bother naming compounds like your teacher asked you to. We just draw the structures because those contain all the relevant information, then label them with abbreviations, common names or just numbers like "3"
I would recommend reading any organic chemistry book because it's going to start with much simpler examples that will build up your confidence and introduce the rules one at a time
Klein's Organic Chemistry is by far the easiest start. Alternatively, there are various websites (google "Organic chemistry nomenclature") that can get you there
Good luck!
aaa scary ochem
This is the worst and least interesting part of organic chemistry by far
it sure would be a shame if someone were to google libgen
Just go to libgen

HOW MUCH DO THEY PAY YOU TO SAY THAT
Pretend you are my grandma who always lulled me to sleep by explaining who was manufacturing and distributing the pumps under different shell companies
They don't want the people to know this but it is so true
I found out when I was trying to find a manual to repair one (lost cause, it turns out the PTFE diaphragm was blown out)
But KNF Neuberger and Edwards sell the same pump with the same manual. Just one is painted blue and one is painted red
There is no record I can find of a collaboration or ownership of one company by the other
Maybe it's a case of some parts being bought at the same company by both KNF Neuberg and Edwards?
Perhaps

Reading Bretherick's compendium of reactive chemical hazards when I stumbled on this
the msds for this chemical says in case of spills wash with water
This is some deep shit
i can only imagine a water line bursting at some factory and the new guy runs in with a hose
if you spill water on yourself and wash it off with more water, are you wet from washing yourself or are you wet from the water you initially spilled on yourself
and how can you tell once you've washed all the water off of you?
I was looking up stuff about dihydrogen monoxide and apparently the IUPAC recommended name besides water is Oxidane
Literally never heard it called that before
that sounds like a product name wtf
Did you hear about the origin behind the name for the dark matter candidate "axions" hehe
no?
The scientist named a hypothetical particle with certain properties axions after a laundry detergent brand because they would clean up the problem of dark matter ha
oh lol
Actually might have been a different problem but cleaned up a problem
Also azane for ammonia
Went to the science dinner - I don't know why these things are so charged, for me, but they are
For just one moment I am with those who, sight unseen, like me for who I am - I don't fight them for resources, it's not knives out over our particular hypotheses, like it is in my home lab
why is every other thing "gamer goober 2004" posts heartbreaking to me 😭
Low key this is sad boy channel with blurry pictures of labware
Gamer goober 2004 we all like you for who you are, we won't fight with you for resources!
Gave myself an evil mind virus weighing the same vial on 5 different analytical balances

About to call a ferocious all hands meeting regarding the diffusion pump

The gifts of the microscopes to our understanding of cells and organisms are so profound that one has to ask: What are the gifts of the microscopist? Here is my opinion. The gift of the great microscopist is the ability to think with the eyes and see with the brain. Deep revelations into the nature of living things continue to travel on beams of light.

On revisiting this it kinda reads like a quote from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Still slaps though
Sludge has advanced in purity to incipient yellow crystals
I think I remember hearing that yellow is generally a bad color to see in chemistry how often is this the case
It is often true for organic compounds but this compound is genuinely yellow
oh no
It's okay I'm gonna send the Big Batch properly
18 hours in lab today because the voices told me to cook harder. Many foolish things were done - fried a valuable electrode, or perhaps it was already gone
A sealed "leakless" EDAQ reference electrode. Nobody knows how they work
oof
that sounds extremely expensive
you know it's bad when they wont show you the price
These electrodes in particular are fascinating to me. They claim a range of indispensable properties, in my own hands they have worked OK, even in conditions that would challenge other electrodes, but the mechanism of operation is protected as a trade secret. There isn't even a patent. The only things we can infer about them come from a FAQ released by the company - and there is nothing in the open literature on them except "we used them"
The only existing contender is possibly the leakless bipolar reference electrode and even those are hand-fabricated and probably have nanoliter leaks
I sent that beautiful blue cobalt chloride powder all over my fume hood trying to add it to this reaction against a stream of inert blanketing gas

Going to the botanical gardens with the new postdoc. Time to appreciate the finer things (cacti)

I would sacrifice any amount of yield for purity btw
Is there a lot of talk about the potential of engineering yeast or bacteria to make new enzymes for certain reactions or is the science not quite there? Have you used enzymes for certain steps before? Also do you do flow chemistry?
pure products? what's that?
It is very rarely practical to carry out chemistry enzymatically. Frances Arnold has the leading program for coaxing unnatural reactivity out of enzymes, it is really good but I don't see myself using what they've done anytime soon
Her group even has an example of directed evolution of enzymes that make carbon-silicon bonds, which is unheard of in nature
In general the chemistry of enzymes is rarely compatible with organic solvent, which is necessary to dissolve most compounds of interest
An example of a genuine practical enzyme method is probably the recently reported "carrot reduction", which works because there is no engineering. You take carrots from the store, chop them up and put them in
I used to do flow chemistry as an undergrad, it's not really applicable to my current work and we don't have the hardware but I think it's generally a very interesting space
carrot my favourite reducing agent fr
is the reduction actually done by enzymes
In this video, I discuss the use of... carrots as reducing agents for ketones. Yes this is real, no it isn't a joke, yes it is hilarious. I want to give a huge thank you to the members of the Discord that made this video possible!
Conditions for the first reduction - 100 mg acetophenone, 70 ml water, 10 g carrot.
Upon reprocessing the spectra, ...
The reducing agent is a chemical in the carrot, the specificity is probably from enzymes or an enzyme in the carrot
Yeah this
https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/break-out-purple-carrots better writeup. Also links to an actual discussion of a reaction run with yeast
i heard thatchemist mention something about carrots having reducing properties once, but i didn't know it was because of an enzyme
good to know
What else in a carrot could you think of as a reductant?
A kinetically competent reductant
Uh is NADPH kinetically competent
Usually not on its own
That was a rhetorical question- the reductant is there, but generally is turned over by an enzyme. I don't think NADPH would react efficiently with those substrates on its own
Remembering what it is all for

Now studying the ways
Aw it sounds happy! Sounds like it has healed indeed
It turns out I put the pump body on wrong by exactly 120 degrees - everything fits together perfectly, just wrong 🙂 sounds even better now

Damn, that's hot
It works a factor of 20x better when I put it back together (again, this time intentionally) the wrong way, with the pump body rotated by 120 degrees
