@finite orchid I read your essay. I agree with your thesis and think you make use of some interesting constructions in your writing. The major issue is that it should probably be longer. Like one of the other people in here said, sources should be there for each side of the issue, as well as an explanation of how you digress from each side and a factual synthesis of your own. The conclusion could be lengthened, too, and the summarizing thought should probably be reworded. That part where you make a plea to consider everyone’s feelings might seem a bit weak and hand-wavey from an academic standpoint. Perhaps change it around to something along the lines of, “Given that this is a highly nuanced issue, the subjective experiences of all people are arguably analogous to data points themselves; thus we should be skeptical of dismissing anyone outright” or something like that

#

Also, your intro with the Hegel quote (which I thought was really cool, even though I’m not familiar with his work,) seems like a combination of an abstract and an intro paragraph (a quote like that wouldn’t usually be seen in an abstract) But since this is your personal project, it’s really up to you in regard to format

@finite orchid ooooo ill read your essay later today

finite orchid
acoustic fern
#

@finite orchid ok i put your essay in a google doc and added a lot of comments

#

Broadly speaking, in addition to what has already been said, I think you need to justify and reason through your arguments more. Right now this essay reads like a series of independent assertions, which often don't seem to have any clear relationship to each other; it's good for a bullet list of the topics you want to cover but it doesn't cohere at all in prose.

#

Also, a lot of the sentences are kind of repetitive. There'll be one idea, that's then backed up by a restatement of that idea. This problem is more pronounced in the preface and closing sections.

#

Finally, I'm curious what your audience is, and how long you intend for this essay to be. You mentioned before how you might want this to be your college essay. Are you still aiming for that, or is this a more general thing?

#

As for the ideas, I'm still not quite sure what you're trying to say. The dialectical theory of gender for instance -- is the dialectic between "gender" and another concept, or between male and female, or essence and appearance, or all of the above or something else?

#

Here's my best guess for what you mean, let me know if this sounds right: objective concepts like mental and physical sex are created dialectically from subjective gendered experience, via language. one's mental and physical sex can be misaligned, which manifests as transness. As such, transness is based on objective sex, not just cultural gender, but objective sex is itself appearance.

finite orchid
torpid solar
#

gremlin intends to force hegel himself to read it

finite orchid
#

Essence can only be accessed though appearance

finite orchid
#

@acoustic fern thanks for the feed back I'll rewrite the second paragraph to make it more cohesive tbh this draft is a good stepping stone

blazing wolf
#

"The experience of some gendered experience appears to be a part of the human experience"

It does need some work.

I would like to hear it go into the significance of gender as a part of human experience and the role of gender roles in defining the characteristics of the genders.

The essay, though, covers a lot... More than a conventional essay would.

Generally, when writing an essay, if you want to focus on something, you laser into it or you keep it all general.
Intermingling the general and specific can be confusing/disorienting unless properly signposted.

I would keep it all general but still show the direction you're going in.

And if you want to go into specifics, forewarn people so they know when they're entering the wormhole.

finite orchid
#

I don't like the last paragraph I will likely delete it and rewrite the whole thing

brisk patrol
finite orchid
#

Na gender I think is much more then that its socially built, and I would probably describe psychological sex characteristics as mental sex

brisk patrol
#

i think there is a point where it is impossible to parse the physical from the cultural. unfortunately we require certain frameworks to even interpret physical phenomena

slate dew
#

The odd thing about mental sex as an idea is that in ideal ideas, we'd all agree to its constituency

#

Like i don't think we all have the same conceptual margins for mental sex's parameters

#

So you'd need to apply it to a certain procedure's nominal variable.

winged shadow
#

i agree with your thesis in terms of social constructivism and reductive bio-determinism (in context, "gender" is a vacuous concept outside of bio sex) being wrong. what ten swords was saying above about unclear parameters was what I got from your conclusion, but I'm not sure if that's what you meant. Looks like lilian has a more specific formulation of the problem in mind

winged shadow
