I cannot bring my dock up to my room due to my family using it, in the living room, so took my usb-c cable and tried to see if it worked with my monitor. It will only seem to go up to 720p, I heard somewhere that doing this is bad for the device, is this true?

better safe than sorry

I don’t see why it would harm the switch in any way?

if its only connecting to the TV directly then it's not being fed an external power source, then I'd worry
docked mode usually requires power. if the monitor itself is providing power for it, it may not be PD or the correct specs the Switch needs to operate safely in docked mode

docked mode draws external power so that the system can be comfortably clocked further (perform better)
pushing it that far on either the System's own battery or a questionable power source is maybe not the best idea

so will anything happen? chances are, your switch will probably be okay. But its not smart to risk putting extra strain on your console like that.

It’s not pushing it far

It barely overclocke

which means the monitor is probably feeding it

You can overclock the switch even farther using certain methods and it works fine

which probably isnt PD

Just a faster battery draw
