Just saying, in my opinion, without the nostalgia filter you're left with a slowly paced pkmn game that doesn't have separate spatk / spdef stats, some really broken game mechanics, no breeding, natures, EVs or IVs - all things that would make a later generation a better option if it were a choice.

Trade evolutions alone would mean no one could ever finish a dex..

I was initially excited when the stadium games were announced, but the absence of the mainline games for gen 1+2 and connectivity between them completely sucked all the excitement right outta me. We should be getting the definitive experience. Not stuck with numerous cut features and rental pokemon. Probably one of the most tone deaf decisions they've made for NSO.

I played ridge racer for about a couple hours today since last weekend and I completed the last 2 expert tracks with the grey default car on the far right. I screwed up a bunch but sometimes I would get a clean drift. Start turning, let go of a a bit, hold it again, drop a couple gears then gear it back up. Sometimes doing it enough gives you a speed boost I guess or you can get a cleaner drift

Wow I'm impressed because in my experience that car was pretty weak soon as I progressed further. I'll give it one more chance. Maybe it has something to do with playing on manual transmission? I know for sure that in some real simulation games like dirt rally you go faster if you manually change transmission because you can transfer speed more efficiently through curves and save a bunch of time. That's how it works in real life as well lol

I will also try playing with manual transmission but I suck at it because I don't drive

You don’t need to drive to be good at a racing game, it’s just practice like anything else.

But I’ll explain later

So first off, you need to learn to drift properly

There’s two parts of the drift, just initiating the drift, and then follow it up with gearing down then up right away immediately after

Doing it successfully gives you a boost

Refer to the link with the “WR first credits”

I made the rookie mistake of using the brakes when you really don’t need them ever o think

Drifting:1. start turning and letting go of the gas for a split second or so, then hold the gas again. You won’t understand it right away but you wanna practice it until it becomes natural, like Mario kart

2. Once you master drifting you want to change gears while drifting

During a drift, you press L/Z to gear down, then once you feel like you gained control again mash it back up to max

If you wait to long to switch your gears you won’t get the lil boost they give you

I am already pretty good at drifting because I'm playing ridge racer since ps1 days and late 90s/early 2000s 😂 I just never had n64 at the time. but these tips about changing gears should definitely come in handy, thanks a bunch. I already tried playing on manual and what I can tell you it's already way easier because you go waaaay faster than auto. I'm not going back to auto anymore 😂 I have beaten expert extra first race, I used save states but I can totally see myself pull it off after some practice

@fervent shale I played that exact one in late 90s/early 2000s. I remember it was the only disc that was working 🤣 laser was picky with games but I was enjoying it as well when the other games were working too. Drifting was always the main part of ridge racer, that's what it's recognized for along with great art style and music. I never played that game on gamecube but have heard of it, didn't know there was reiko nagase in it. I hate speedruns, was never my thing. But I do enjoy improving my skills when I feel like it but I set the challenges myself then watch other people play to improve. I don't like multiplayer in general, except for maybe occasionally with family locally on the couch or in games like splatoon where it doesn't matter for me personally if I communicate with the team. I play for my own joy and I usually carry them all 🤣

Wish I got ps classic when it was sold and the other mini consoles. I only managed to get nes mini

Most multiplayer games I enjoy for progression system, not that much for playing with other people. NSO games were made to be enjoyed with people you know locally so I don't find it very much fun online because it's barebones. If there was matchmaking I would play it more because it's easier to connect that way

So seems like the best cars in ridge racer R4 are ones with good speed AND acceleration

Some of these cars your a freaking snail when you side crash something

But the blue heaven star or something like that was better then some car in the car attack after it. It was like some formula 1 car which just has buns acceleration and turning

I just played PS2 lil cup rental randomizer but lost at the final round.

On the plus side I made it to the final track in ridge racer r4. The Extreme Green Wild goose rip off car pulled it off. And a lot of the stats displayed aren’t as accurate to the current car. Seems like a common misconception in racing games unfortunately

And then wario land 4 found all the treasure pieces, 💿 CDs, keys, and beat the bosses in the bottom half, just started topaz path. Still need one treasure piece but found a CD. It’s getting trickier. (Normal difficulty)

Crazy how wario land 4 took so long to get here still. A little bit for ridge racer as well, idk if it was on VC before at all but still either way.

It took a long time for me to start enjoying NSO and now when I just started enjoying it they make it suck again. At first when I subscribed there were only NES games and I thought it was barebones, almost didn't play it at all. When SNES games came I thought it was cool but still not enough for me and that it could offer so much more. N64 comes and I'm pissed at price point but still subscribe, next two years I find it for 10 euros cheaper for the first one and I think again wow that's okay and the other year I used base subscription that I got with Tetris 99 included and upgraded for only 20 euros, that subscription is still running 'til July. When I see how much Game Pass and PS Plus Premium cost I think 40 euros price is fair though tbh and they added GameBoy/GameBoy Advance games and Nintendo Music app but man now when I think they start removing those games NSO has been a rollercoaster with love/hate relationship.

With Switch 2 they should definitely bring the option to buy games separately if you choose so along with using them on service. Just like Game Pass does. This is a mess

Family plan the expansion is dirt cheap though. Weird that a launch game is getting removed but it’s one game out of the hundreds. I’m not gonna play every single game on each system, even my most frequently played systems, theirs just gonna be games left in the dust.

It’s like nothing now, and I’m not gonna worry for like 5+ years about goldeneye and other rareware losing rights mid or end of switch 2 life cycle. Before all this some people only sub for a year or so to expansion anyways or until something else of interest drops

Except it's insanely expensive to buy and collect those games. There needs to exist a service where we can buy them conveniently. I don't understand how anyone hasn't created a service in this day and age where you can legally buy every rom with permission of publishers. They could easily earn tons of money and it would solve all problems with emulation being a illegal/grey zone. I happily buy retro compilations but we need something to give us freedom to use our games how we like. For example, you can't use mega man legacy collection on retroarch if you want to. Maybe you could dump it somehow but it's too complicated for the average person. Something like what GOG does with old PC games would be cool for old consoles. Retro gaming is huge nowadays

Exactly, why did people stop pirating on PC? Because Steam offered better service. People download roms because it's easy. No guilt felt, I had to save state abuse. Last 3 laps flawless is just a bit too much, idk if I’ll do it for the rest of the game or not but I felt like I spent way too much time on it already

The sad part is I made a decent amount of mistakes and beat it in the mirror race in the first try

I wasn’t just save stating after each lap before I unlocked it, I was save stating sections. Screaming Eagle is much more responsive turning, acceleration is better, and the max speed is a bit higher

Ridge racer 64 grew on me so much. I love this game. Some tracks I got 1st in Z class first attempt, while others took a while, but the last track in stage 8 was a first attempt in Z class lol. Theoretically if you run the game in airplane mode and then connect to the internet after it's already running and put the console in sleep mode you could play it indefinitely

I didn't know you liked racing games that much until you recent replies. I saw you playing them on the stream but I thought you did because you like N64 app in general. I like all games that are straight up to the action and racing/fighting games fit that play style. But racing games are my fav. I own almost all racing games for the switch. I'm not very good at fighting games, I just play them casually.

The app made me like n64 a lot more. The n64 was my first system. Iggys wrecking balls was wild for the first time but in the long run got repetitive. Extreme g is pretty fun but everybody must use the cheat code with the buffed up laser. Great ost. Wave race drives good once you learn it. F zero X none of my friends are outracing me much unless I fall off but not in the overall points. I like all the f zero zero games though. Mario kart I’m not as much as a fan. Rng, some time trial dudes are really good, some of the times don’t work well, or modern Mario kart way wayyyy too much knowledge needed in the cuts so many tracks. I like battle mode in Mario kart though.

Not an fps guy but goldeneye and perfect dark are alright as long as the opponent knows the map like the back of his hand and I get shot 10 times at my spawn or nobody’s kills the leading player

Stadiums, it’s been one hell of a ride and I guess I can thank the 64 DD cancellation for it

I always liked custom robo but learned a ton from the Japanese players on the app and watching tournaments

Wave race went from c tier to a tier once I learned it and once again none of my nso friends are outracing me but one person gives me a run for my money sometimes

Excite bike 64 the same thing but man that game is slippery, hell, I only like the off terrain stages since most of the tracks are just plain with the real life dirt bike race style

I only really go back for 4 player soccer

Yea, I havnt mentioned a lot of one player games, been through them, but majoras mask is my favorite and at the launch of nso I was doing some Oot glitches. Dot skip, early Forrest temple, and I think trying to do infinite sword glitch with a bottle or something against the phantom ganon boss with low health or something crazy

I think I still have a save state in there and funny to switch friends into player 1 in that situation and see what they can do

For one player I’d like rayman 2 and robotron, but that one does have a sort of co op mode but not simultaneously

Mario 64 I got a file on the all stars version, prefer and had DS version before hand. Unfortunately I had the 64 with pilot wings I believe. Couldn’t get into it on nso but used to mess around a lot as a lil kid

It's something I can play every morning while drinking coffee. There are a lot of Pokemon trophies to unlock, I enjoy that process. Custom robo, I know you love that game. I tried it on your recommendation with Japanese NSO apps but I can't enjoy something not in the language I understand so I didn't bother. Also, it flooded my Switch News with Japanese, it took half a year to disappear from my Switch. 😵 excite bike 64, I can't resist racing games. I love it. I just needed to change controls a bit in Switch menu to resemble more something modern like Monster Energy Supercross and I found it much more enjoyable. Sin & Punishment is a good game just a bit short with not much to do once you finish it. Win back, I need to play that one more but I think I'll enjoy it. I love Dr. Mario 😂

What do you mean? In mk64? If you didn't learn drifting/boosting technique maybe you should give it another chance because it's pretty easy to learn and makes the game significantly more enjoyable. I also don't get if you consider mk 64 a modern mario kart or not? Because I don't. Diddy Kong is definitely coming in the future but I don't think so for mickey speedway usa sadly because rare made the game and it's owned by microsoft and mickey license is owned by disney. Konami probably doesn't care about NSO. I don't know about San Francisco Rush but Cruisin' USA is realistic to expect because it's owned by nintendo

IMO it would be fun if there were more rewards unlockable that way but most people hate to grind 😂 Never played on wii u but I've heard they stripped almost all unlockables from coins with mk8dx and made it unlocked at start. I like accumulating them. 🤓 also in Mario Party, most people see longevity in playing with other people but since I never had friends to play with on Nintendo systems I had to focus on things I can do alone so I'm collecting coins there too. NSMB2 came up with that idea as a way to extend gameplay. It's simple, but it works and it's not much different as how some people accumulate VR in MK or leveling up in any other online game today and the best thing is you can do it in offline mode so when servers shut down you can still do it

San Francisco rush is a solid racer. That being said, I think the AI is too hard to try to get first as well as executing a lot of short cuts. Collectibles in everyone. Not much tracks but you get backwards and mirrored variations

I didn’t bother with backwards for the 2nd two games. The shortcuts feel somewhat satisfying but most of the time I can pull all of them off consistently. Would be interesting to not get expansion this month to get all 3 next month for the Nintendo store opening in San Francisco

Most companies make better versions of their consoles over time. Nintendo over here was like "Wii u just came out? Let makes the most bare bones worst edition of the Wii getting rid of 90% of its features"

Idk. Going forward, will it be more expensive for Nintendo to get a license for a GameCube game than it has been, for example, for a SNES game? I think that's what it'll come down to. Then it becomes a cost-reward analysis for Nintendo; if a price hike is justifiable from a consumer perspective
