#Best Pokémon game for someone that's never played Pokémon before?
243 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Switch deviates from the traditional formula unfortunately
Best Pokemon game to start is 3DS or DS generation imo
I unfortunately need something on the Switch
Scarlet Violet has the biggest playerbase so trading probably easiest on that game. I think Legends of Arceus is the most fun one based on what people say
only one I actually tried was Let's Go Pikachu which didn't take me long to drop because it was just hard to pick up coming from 3DS generation
Idk why old Pokemon games are not on NSO+
Probably because a lot of people would play those instead of buy the newer ones
I know I would
fair enough 💀
I would be playing offline, guess I should've added that bit
I started with arceus
Pokémon Legends Arceus is a fantastic game whether you are new or a long time fan of the franchise.
Awesome, I think I'll start with that!
Amazing! It's a great choice and I hope you enjoy!
Thanks!
Just depends. The let’s go games are simple and fun and have the original 152 Pokémon in it but Scarlet/Violet and Arceus have this big open world that throws a lot more at you but there is more game to play as well. If you are worried about difficulty don’t be. Saying Pokémon is difficult would be like saying Mario Odyssey is hard or something like that.
I haven't played Mario Odyssey either, but good to know haha! The only thing I hope is just that it holds your hand a little. I played BOTW when it first came out and never finished it because it was too open.
If you didn’t know all Pokémon games work off the same formula. Get a starting Pokémon, catch more, train them, go to cities and look for the gym leader, after getting 8 gym badges battle the elite 4. While all this is happening some sort of story will be taking place as well.
ah ok thanks for the info!
The training Pokemons part happen naturally
Pokemon requires you to think but it's pretty easy for the most part
Sweet, yeah I juist like when there's a clear main story. I felt like BOTW was too open and I just don't do well with those lol
There is a clear main story but it's not like super good or anything.
Pokemon main stories are just nice
aside from gen 5. That one is peak
Alright sweet. Yeah I haven't really ever played any nintendo games except smash, mario party, and mario kart when I was a kit on game cub.
So I'm now kind of in this mood where multiplayer games are just super boring to me so I want to play some more story and single player driven games
Umm I mean I think every Pokémon game is pretty easy. Even the older games. I’ve played every entry too.
The story isn't exactly what you buy Pokemon for but do enjoy it
Yeah no the story isn’t good lol
I mean whatever lol still that single player experience I'm after
Gen 5 story 🥵
I was also interested in Fire Emblem 3 houses, but it may be a little out of my skill range right now lol
Yeah totally! They are great games!
I actually did quite enjoy the gen 7 story tbh
I'm a fan
I'm just not sure what other switch games I should be looking at. I mean I've really played basically nothing. I don't like platformers like Mario FYI
To get into single player games, I'd try some fairly new good ones and then visit retro masterpieces sometime
any other suggestions for stuff?
Umm have you tried xenoblade, bayonetta, astral chain, Metroid remastered?
like other switch games? There really isn't much to say about Switch Pokemon lol
What are some games you have liked in the past? Doesn’t have to be Nintendo
I am honestly not interested in Metroid, but Xeneblode, Bayonetta, and Stral chain seemed out of my skill lol
No any other game not Pokemon specific lol
Xenoblade and Bayonetta have easy mode
I guess not skill as in difficulty, but just figuring out what to do where to go lol
I played Xenoblade 1 on easy mode because attacks don't hit when a 6lvl difference between you and the boss and I didn't wanna farm
Xenoblade have a very clear objective marker that you can toggle
I am honestly an esports gamer which is super lame. LOL, CSGO,
What Xenoblade game would you start with and is it hard to follow along with the story?
And you are trying to branch out? I used to only play shooters like cod, warzone, fortnite, Valorant exc
You can start with any but the expansion pass in XC3 requires understanding of both 1 and 2
Playing in order is ideal though
Yes exactly. I'm very sick of just playing League of legends, and CSGO and as an adult want to just enjoy some single player games.
Xeno 1 gameplay isn't that fun for me. It's just single player mmorpg with 1 3 member party
I've heard xenoblade 2 is amazing and it looks fun I just am not sure if starting there would ruin the story for me
I still liked it but the story is the selling point of Xeno 1
it wouldn't
I love Nintendo but honestly other than being too competitive at smash and loving botw and the recent totk game. I prefer other game from other consoles for story.
Xeno 3 does pay some homage to the first 2 lol
but understanding of both games isn't a required unless expansion pass
I’ve heard xeno 3 is the best overall
most well rounded
What systems do you have?
Interesting, I have an Xbox one S, but honestly wanted to go through and play some of the Nintendo stuff. I'm not specifically looking for the BEST single player story ever I just want some single player games that are fun. Three houses looked fun, xenoblade looked fun, Immortals fenyx rising looked fun, Marrio+rabbids looked fun, Luuigis mansion, Pokemon, etc...
Xenoblade 3 have the best sidequests I've ever played. I mean most games don't have good side quests so this one was real nice
I really like dark souls style games and Ashen on switch is a lot of fun. You might like Luigi’s mansion as well.
There's a lot yeah
Yeah Luigis mansion I've played for a little, but was borrowing the game from a friend and he wanted it back and didn't get to finish. Wife and I had fun playing together though.
nice
Oh you might like Final Fantasy Crisis Core it has a good story
Play the OG FF7 first tbh
Super liner and easy too

Crisis core is a prequel though
Crisis Core debunks the main mystery of OG FF7
FF always looked kind of interesting but wow am I confused by the games and everything. One is a huge MMO like wow, some are old single player games lol doesn't make any sense
They aren’t in order at all.
Yeah it's very confusing lol I don't know if you have to start with one to understand the story or what lol
It's just spin offs from a particular game lol
just go any
Well, I will start with Pokemon Arceus and then was looking at Xenoblade, but should I start at 1 or 2?
I watched Crisis Core, 7 Remake. Played 6, 7, 9
Shulk is the best character in Xenoblade and he probably has the best story to tell so I'd say 1. I never played 2
So none of them are in order they are all different games. Except FF 7 was so popular they made a spin off game that is a prequel to the story called Crisis Core
Crisis Core clears up misconceptions about OG 7
I see, so none of the story you have to know from prior games?
Ye
Guess I'll give 1 a try
Or "definitive edition"
that gameplay isn't the selling point though
Exactly. FF 15 and FF 16 have no correlation to one another.
XC1 gameplay isn't the selling point of the game. The story is
So is FF just a "world" where different stories of people are told each game?
Yes
Now he’s getting it
Like Mario? Except (usually mario is in every game) While FF not every character is in every game or not one single character is in every game.
The world of Mario
Well FF is just a title that sounds cool
Latter
So Cloud is only in FF7 and some spin offs of that game. He gets collabed with other games like Kingdom Hearts
FF is just a marketing name and the number is just telling the audience “hey we did this thing again for the #th time”
but Cloud isn't in other mainlines
It's a very cool name can't lie
Or like the star wars world, except instead of them all being about Anakin it's like it could be a new story about someone random?
I mean you know what I mean I guess lol
not the best example, but just the Star Wars universe
Imagine Star Wars but every movie was completely different and none of them related to one another
^
Even the universe isn't the same lmao
Like FF 10 has a sequel but it’s just called 10-2
I know people love FF, but why is it not talked about much on Switch? Just because they are old games and so well known everyone has played them all or what?
Yeah they are super old.
yeah also FFX has a fully closed ending so X-2 is more or less an epilogue
I gotta play FF10
Ff games on switch go up to FF 12 and we are currently on FF 16. I believe FF 13 came out on Xbox 360
Ah yeah just old
12 is on Switch??
well 11 aside
Yea
So... I know there is a lot of great games, but... how do I pick just a couple or one to play for now lol? I've gotten Xenoblade, FF, and both have multiple games. Probably gonna start with Pokemon tho
I'd say just pick 1
Like play a Xenoblade, play a Pokemon, play a Final Fantasy, see what franchise you like best
Well if you get a crisis core it’s only like a 30hr game but xenoblade is like a 70hr game
Oh wow i thought they were all like 70+ hrs
Wtf lol
Persona 5 took me 140+ 🔥
Not gonna like I’m 80hrs in totk and starting to get bored. I have a hard time committing that much time to a game.
@neon gulch gotta say Zuko is my fav character of all time btw

one of the best written characters ever
in one of the greatest piece of fiction ever
Yeah, hopefully the next installments will be good. Idk how they could match the original though.
yeah the comics don't live up aside from The Search trilogy. I do like the comics still
I haven't seen Korra yet
Korra is good. I have such a bitter sweet taste with Korra. They made some really weird decisions with the story that caused it to not hold your attentions as much.
oh
Like they tried to mimick the same character types from the original and they just weren’t nearly as likable and there was never a main villain. Just different villains through each arc
oh
Picking up Korra is a bit of a challenge for me since it's just so hard to detach from the Last Airbender cast
but I'll get to it soon
I guess this is the best way I should put it
I have always loved the idea of playing singleplayer games when hearing about them, seeing reviews, etc... I just wouldn't stick them out when I was a kid because I wanted to play competitive games and went down that rabbit hole. Now I'm kind of realizing single player games are where it's at. However, I get uninterested fairly quick and so something to get me started and interested that holds my hand a little, isn't too difficult, has an ok story, and isn't 30 hours+ wouild probably be what I should start with.
I don't really play the same franchise back to back to avoid burn out tbh
Average JRPGs are around 40hrs
I mean I guess I could do that, but IDK where to start. I was thinking Pokemon was a good starting point. I know it's not in that class but...
Old Pokemon is what you actually missed out on
I was the exact same way but I was always mad and aggravated after getting off so I knew I had to change the games I was playing
miss those days 😔
Yeah lol
For me it was just Fortnite died, watched enough anime, time to play single player games
IDK why I just could never really have fun and it always sound interesting, but then I would get bored and go back to LOL ranked or CSGO competitive lol.
When I think of single player games I’ve actually enjoyed the first ones that come to mind are god of war, last of us remake, Elden ring, and totk
Maybe Pokemon Legends Arceus is the best to start
on Switch probably
Tears of the Kingdom looks super interesting even though I just didn't want to finish BOTW
idk how interesting the Legend of Arceus catching Pokemons open world is
instead of traditional wild encounters
My close friend hated botw but now has 100 hrs in totk
Ngl I put down Arceus bc of how long that tutorial was 😂
I love traditional JRPG practices but wild encounters do get annoying sometimes, in final fantasy specifically since there isn't repel item
Octopath Traveler 🙄
long tutorials are pain
@bronze depot don’t count out all the titles that are on switch online. There are some great storyline games like Earthbound and Golden Sun.
Actually infuriating that Nintendo does not put old Pokemon games on it
Idt they can
I don't see why not
@neon gulch why don’t you get an emulator and replay the old stuff or play some of the great fan made games made off of the originals?
Because it’s not their game. It’s Game Freaks property
I always pirate old games yeah
I mean I could but tbh I'm not even that interested in the Og's probably because I don't know much about them and I don't feel like playing an emulator either
but Pokemon on a handheld does hit different
Yeah just get an rg35xx or something. Then play Pokémon Unbound 😎
what is pokemon unbound
Haha I appreciate the suggestions but I'm not really too interested.
I think I'll go with Pokemon Arceus
Sounds good
You should try switch online with Earthbound though
is mother 3 on NSO
It’s a fan made game off of fire red but it has Megas and nearly the complete dex and a decent story too
Nope but I’m playing a fan translation of it right now 😎.. I like it more than Earthbound but that’s a hot take.
They truly are. Have you tried Nexelmon?
Well if you like old school Pokémon you should definitely try Unbound
but I read a lot of Pokemon books and manga
Wait you haven’t played heartgold/soulsilver? Fire red/leaf green? Emerald? Platinum?
Never heard of it
I'm a gen 6 kid. More or less says my age
You should get you a Ds or a 3DS and buy a $14 R4 card and have fun
I do have 3DS
Earthbound? Ever heard of Undertale?
Earthbound is the Ness game if you ever played Smash
Google R4 card then. Free Ds for you lol
An R4 card doesn’t require any custom software and jail breaking your 3DS and all you do is just play it like a normal game but it hold all the Ds games you could possibly want. It can’t play 3Ds though.
Yeah idk if Earthbound is my thing lol
That’s fine 🙂
Games that are inspired by Earthbound like Undertale and Omori seem easier to get into
Well more a Ds cartridge but yes.
Ds cartridges work with 3DS
Not sure those games are my thing like at all lol
If Pokemon ends up being your thing, it should be fine
Not gonna be closed off to them though, I'd keep my mind open
Those games are for the story. It’s not the graphics or sick action combat lol
yeah for sure
Undertale story is amazing though and it’s funny too
iconic soundtrack
I have heard great things, but it's definitely not for me yet lol
if Pokemon ends up being for you, a lot of masterpieces might be too
@gaunt creek @neon gulch Played Pokemon Legends Arceus for a little and man it's been quite boring so far lol
kip did say the tutorial is long
Yea I think the tutorial is like 3hrs
Also if you don’t like Pokémon then that’s fine. Maybe pickup a game with a good story too. Pokémon is all about the collecting and battling aspect and how you can move your Pokémon to the newer games.
Yeah I mean I guess it sounds stupid but is the entire game just capturing and filling out the Pokédex collection log? Is there any story or boss or anything like that lol?
Capturing, battling, story exc but i did say that Pokémon is not known for their story.
there are post game things in Pokemon too
Its probably not what you are looking for, but Pokemon snap is my first and I find it good to get to know the pokemons. Obviously, you dont catch any of them
yeah lol
