Shouldn't lag because it's just cards to cards, the only thing you'll probably experience if you don't have your switch close enough to your wifi is just slow delay of cards being played.

Yeah sounds about right, Most of the time that happens when A a player uses Japanese symbols while not really in Japan because Switch can't handle Japanese Characters very well (I mean... maybe its our wifi here although still) or 2 it takes a while because in rare cases you'll get an opponent across another galaxy.

The Switch is made by Japanese company, and probably is the most popular console in Japan. I don't think it would have trouble dealing with Japanese characters.
Games performance on the Switch has always been botchy due to the lower graphic specs compare to modern consoles.
