#racing game OTHER THAN MARIO KART

Grid Autosport is the most popular one
It has online(not sure how active), splitscreen, steering wheel and Labo support
It even supports the GameCube controller's analogue triggers
There is NFS on switch as well
and Burnout Paradise
there's a surprising amount of them
Fast RMX - a fantastic technical showpiece for the Switch, running as well as MK8, with 60fps and incredible speeds, however the game's mechanics arent well balanced , lighter vehicles greatly outclass heavier ones.
Redout 2 - Better on other platforms but worth a look if you a graphically impressive anti-gravity racer, however do be warned - the game's difficulty balance currently is skewed way too hard.
Wreckfest - easily one of the most impressive modern switch ports that runs basically as good as the PS4/XB1 versions.
Burnout Paradise: the game runs as well as it did back on PS3/360 which was already impressive back then, with 60fps gameplay and really responsive controls, it id hampered by the fact it released before EA's crossplay push for their games... which is where
NFS: Hot Pursuit Remastered: Once again this one runs as well as its PS3/360 versions, 30fps however and not 60fps like ps4/xb1 versions are capable of, but the game was very playable in 30, and is probably easily one of the most well balanced racers on the system, though it has 2 less cars compared to the original release 10+ years ago. but this one does have crossplay with other systems which is great!
Riptide GP: Renegade: a fun little water-based jetski racer that has good control and a decent amount of tracks (9)
Beach Buggy Racing 2: Island Adventure: a pretty decent mario kart clone that does have a ton of content to go through and a massive singleplayer campaign too, and it has 4 player support for the whole game, campaign included, the game is regularly on sale too 👍
SkyDrift Infinity: for when racing on the ground isnt appealing enough for you, a fantastically unique plane racer that has an impressive Switch port running at 60fps in performance mode, held back by its lacking track count (13... with only 12 available in splitscreen) - at least this one has splitscreen unlike the original PS3/360 releases! - definitely good value too 👍
.
Table Top Racing: World Tour: another impressive Switch port for a PS4/PC title that has 2P splitscreen exclusive to the Switch version (still is) and a fairly decently long singleplayer campaign to boot.
Rise: Race the Future: Another great example of a game steadily improving over time since its original release now with splitscreen, 60fps support and ways to make the vehicle more drivable if you struggle with its original handling.
TeailBlazers: Splatoon but with cars to put it simply, a fun little racer where your main goal is to paint as much of the track as possible in your team's colour - works surprisingly decently and even has a singleplayer campaign, also crossplay too but sadly before the great 'all platform crossplay' push more games later had - BUT this game does also have 4P splitscreen too - and even splitscreen with online support!
SEGA AGES - Virtua Racing: Now here's a special case, although it has only 3 courses, the game has 8 PLAYER SPLITSCREEN
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST
CRUISN' BLAST - Easily one of the best non-mariokart racers on the Switch - with 4 player splitscreen, crazy tracks with ways to make it even more accessible and soon to be added online play and DLC sometime this year
I would've mentioned GRIP and Xenon Racer but they arent the best ports on Switch, especially in the case with Xenon, which is a shame. and im not mentiong the CTR remake due to optional microtransactions, but it does play well and has splitscreen support
i love racing games so i was happy to mention all the racing games i own on the system or other systems
hope this helps 👍
here's a good summary though
Good Budget Options: SkyDrift Infinity, Beach Buggy Racing 2: Island Adventure, Rise: Race the Future, Fast RMX
Good all-round racers: Cruisn Blast, NFS: Hot Pursuit, Burnout Paradise, Wreckfest
Games Mentioned without Splitscreen - Redout 2, NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered, Burnout Paradise (technically), Wreckfest
Has anyone mentioned Hot Wheels Unleashed yet? Haven’t played it but seems interesting
I’ve been looking at Wreckfest myself
To satiate my love of scrappy rally racing
its a really impressive port that plays just as well as the already impressive PS4/XB1 verisons
Sounds interesting, perhaps a good “realistic” alternative to mario kart
How bout Wreckfest vs. Hot Wheels Unleashed ?
wreckfest is better
i wanted to like hotwheels so much, but my god is it an unbalanced mess of a game with stupid limited time battlepasses and you cant get all the DLC together
also it only has 2 plyer splitsceen and you vant even play on your custom created tracks with AI opponents, its hopelessly lacking in so many area
OH and non dlc car unlocks are ALMOST COMPLETELY random, aping lootboxes... so unlocking stuff was completely awful & by chance too
the Hotwheels expansion for Beach Buggy Racing 2: Island Adventure is far better bang for your buck in terms of hotwheels content in game-form @steady vector
the only benefit Unleashed has over BBR2 is that Unleashed does have online play... but the Switch version lacks the crossplay support other versions get so its pointless anyway, Unleashed is unbelievably half assed in so many little ways :(
due to this my disappointment with Hotwheels Unleashed made it one of my mre disliked same of last year - and Cruisn Blast was my game of the year for 2021
Cruisn Blast is just that good
So no online play with Wreckfest? Is there local?
no local with wreckfest, but it has online
up to 16 player lobbies with wreckfest's online too
Haven’t played Switch online in ages, have they added voice chat yet?
not sure... thiiiink so? albeit in limited support for certian games, and as far as i know no racers have it
Only on select games and they still require the app
Some games like Fortnite dont need the app though
pretty much, Splatoon 2 for example needs the phone app for voice?
Yeah
What's worse is that it only works on private lobbies
wow thats hilariously dumb xD
Mario Kart and Smash Bros have voice chat for public lobbies atleast
So it’s practically non existent
Yep
unless the game has Epic support yes
What do peeps do as solutions? Discord?
I tried it once and it had a warning "do not use abusive language" which me and my friend made fun of
pretty much
Yep, just join. L4G servers
Guess I need a mini mixer to manage game&vc audio
If you need a phone for voice chat then just ditch NSO and use the superior app
though speaking of online, im still waiting on Cruisn Blast to get online play support since it sold well enough for the devs to warrant including it
Even some Nintendo commercials have players use Zoom instead of the online app
I did it in the past with the Discord App but I learnt if I do it again I’d prefer plugging both audio sources into a mixer to clean it up in VC and manage levels easily
Interesting
Cruisn is unashamedly CRAAZY in all the best ways, albeit simple to play, that doesnt stop it from being more importantly - FUN
oh and it does not take itself seriously AT ALL
also it has 4 player splitscreen and local wireless support
