So, yesterday I arrived at our resort (yes this is important to the story). I brought my switch to dock it while I was there! I got there, set the dock up and it worked completely fine. I took the switch off the dock overnight. I went to play again earlier today, and not my switch doesn’t charge from the dock or directly from wall outlet to console. I’ve tried restarting, hard resetting, and making sure to let the charger sit for a bit. Did the hotel outlet do something to my wire?

oooh boy
sso it isn't charging?
Most hotel wires AREN'T that good,
I suggest getting a new one?
(charger, that is)
@unique fjord wiggle the cord
And how did you have it charging
Hmm
If you charged it by dock it can't be the port
no it doesnt charge by dock or regular wire now
they both worked fine last night, though
i tried lmao
@unique fjord try leaving the switch charging for a while even if it doesn't charge
It might just the switch
im just gonna turn OFF the switch for awhile while i meet with a f riend
and ill try it again when i come back
that could work
I remember my joycon wouldn't register to my switch and after leaving it alone it connected
Sometimes it's the switch acting buggy
im probably just gonna leave my switch till later yeah
and if it doesnt work, then ill wait till i get home. the hotel outlet couldve done something to my wire, who knows
Its a high chance it will start charging when you get back
Yep
It’s still not charging as of a few minutes ago. I’m back at the pool rn so I’ll check again
ac
HOW TO RESET AC ADAPTER
If your console has issue with charging, no power or other power issue:
1. Unplug the AC adapter from the wall sockets and other devices.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Plug the AC adapter back into the wall socket then back to the device you want to charge.
‣ Source: Nintendo's guide
So do the reset, and then leave it plugged in for 5-10 hours?
Yes
Could I just leave it overnight?
Well, that'll do, too
I’ll try it again at home too, as I’m still at the resort
Is there a reason why it would be doing this?
It's a problem with the power management chip. It can be from using 3rd party charger that doesn't suit the Switch, or leaving it without charging for too long. And sometime it just does it on its own.
This is covered in our power/charging guide
pow
POWER & CHARGING GUIDE
• What cable can I use to charge the Switch?
Any decent quality cable from a well-known brand can work but what you also need to worry about is the power supply, A.K.A. the charger.
• What charger/power bank can I use with the Switch?
A Switch compatible charger/powerbank need to have Power Delivery (PD) standard (PPS is part of PD), and output of 5V/1.5A. This is only to charge in handheld mode.
**⚠︎ Warning for dock mode **
Using a low quality power supply can damage your Switch in dock mode. Compatibility is also quite sketchy, even with correct power output (15V/2.6A~3A). Aside from confirmed chargers/powerbank in our recommendation list, It's best to use the original AC Adapter for dock mode.

I didn’t have it charging overnight.
First night I’ve done it
Hmm which charger did you use to charge it overnight?
And if you used that charger often, can you read the input specs on it for me?
I said I DIDNT have it charging overnight
I use the original charger that came with the console. Never used any 3rd party one
Well, you did say first night you have done it, but I'm not sure what you meant
Ah I see, you used the AC adapter on your phone, not the other way around
What
I’m confused
I think you’re confused
I didn’t use my phone charger for the switch
What's this about then?
I used my phone as an example that my phone charges fine from that outlet
That's what I said
Because I brought up that this happened at the resort with a different outlet
But that's dangerous, don't do that. Since the Switch's AC adapter has only 2 power schemes.
Most chargers have 3 (or more), if the power schemes don't match with your phone, it might damage it
I’m confused
Don't use the Switch's AC adapter to charge anything but the Switch.
????
I didn’t
Ah you tested the outlet...
Yes
I see I see
I thought you meant the Switch's AC adapter
No I can see where that can be mixed up dw
For these problems, it's never the outlet though, so that's not a problem
Anyway, you have the steps to do. Anything else from it is unclear?
make sure to read the power/charging guide though, it's good to know those info
Does it charge at all?
I meant like right now
No
Damn, I hope it's nothing big
Well, I'm not gonna scare you of what it can be now. So let's just wait.
I’ve had my switch for around 7 months now
Hmm that's relative new.
Even if it's a hardware issue, I think it's still OK-ish, your Switch is still within warranty.
It sucks to not have it around while it's being repaired but better than paying for the repair, which can cost upward $100 for this kind of issue.
I can't see the battery icon well, can you zoom on it?
Also, make sure the bottom and top vents are clear of obstructions while it's charging.
I’m so freaking scared bro
You have a different Switch?
Nope
Alright nvm testing then
My sister has a USB-C cable in her car. I’ll see if I can maybe get that to see if it’s the wire?
Nope
No, the AC adapter's wire is not detachable
Then it's useless
Is using a different block for a sec dangerous?
Just to test and see if it’s the wire
Well, you already saw what I mentioned earlier
Mhm
So don't
This is why I don’t like the switch in some ways
Unless you actually read the guide and know how to read chargers' specs
There are so many bugs and issues
No I didn’t lol
I figure most people don’t
Yeah, most people don't and hence they can't deal with these issues
Well, it's a relative cheap handheld console. Not much you can do about it.
I’ve already known about the whole charging thing forever though
Hence why I never used a 3rd party
Cheap????
$300 is not cheap
Cost of production is much lower than that
And yes, it's actually cheaper compare to a phone
and much cheaper compare to other modern consoles
Relax, everything can be fixed, you still have warranty
And then, taking this up with my parents if it doesn’t work? We searched forever to be able to find one of the animal crossing editions.
Would I just send a request to nintendo or sum?
Eh, if you know how to do custom shell, it ain't that impressive
Yes
No I don’t
I don’t trust myself fiddling with the joycons
That's fine
And eh, if you really want to ask questions about those
read the power/charging guide
and read the repair guide in #972512184921907280
Can It be found online?

[👉 Nintendo Repair Service](#986637761916317707 message)
Nintendo offers their own repair service for free within warranty period and with cost when warranty has expired. Joycon's repair are often free, regardless of warranty. Their service is often more reliable, with original replacement parts, but is more expensive.
[👉 Independent Repair Service](#986637761916317707 message)
A local, independent repair service may offer faster return time, cheaper and doesn't need warranty nor official support. Although finding a good local repair service needs some effort.

OHHHH
You meant that
I thought you meant there was one maid by nintendo 😭 im so sorry
It's fine, but please try to read them
Nintendo is a company, their advices are often super generic
and if there's an under-lying issue, they wouldn't admit it lol
I did
But yeah I have always used every single original cable for my switch. Always. Never used anything 3rd party at all
Chill
My god
I did
I’m just saying that I haven’t
And don’t plan on
Alright, I'll end it here, not much else to do but wait, good luck with your Switch
Thanks. I’ll let you know
@blissful narwhal Just checked my switch. Been about 5-6 hours since I plugged it in. Still not charging.
Unless you're using high end phones like Samsung and iPhone, most good Android phones are usually less than $300. Moto is selling good phones under that price range.
Wait…would it be an issue that I’ve had it plugged into an extension cord, and not directly into an outlet? Could that be a root cause? I unfortunately had no choice at the time if I wanted to charge my switch and plug in what else we needed.
Not really. And if it's a surge protector, it would be better.
You may have a broken power management chip. I'd test it with a Power Delivery charger but hey you don't wanna plug it in a 3rd party.
Best bet is to send it in for repair

Yes, but a sub $300 phone ain't gonna let you play exclusive games on it.
oh here we go
A $300 phone has a lot of use than just playing games. The discussion here is $300 is definitely not a cheap amount. My android phone cost me $190
And I have been using it for 3 years
Ok, understand. But this is rather off-topic to the OP's question, let's end that here.
I'll wait for Aurelia's reply
I don’t mind, but I don’t have a PD charger
Is it guaranteed that Nintendo will fix it?
No
Switch is the only USB-C device I have
Alright, it's best to be safe
I’ll try my sisters USB C charger though
Eh don't
Just to check and see if it’s the wire I won’t actively use it
Haha please remember that the "wire" is not just the wire, it's a power supply that's attached with a cable
Since a lot of people think the cable plays a major part but it's actually the power supply
I fr hope it’s just the ac adapter
anyway, Idk what went wrong so I can't suggest you to use any charger without PD in it
You can check around to see if you have a charger with PD on them and use it to test
What's the output of your charger? I use my phone charger which outputs 5v/3A
but if it doesn't have PD, and you use it on there, it might worsen the situation
Idk. I have an iPhone
Not USB-C
I won’t then
Is it guaranteed that Nintendo will be able to fix it if it is the chip?
Power scheme is just one part of the story, without PD it may create other problem
Yes, but we don't know that yet. Like you said, it can be just the AC adapter.
If you buy a charger from a reputed brand like Xiaomi, One plus then they do have PD in their chargers. PD is an old tech.
Ya know, easily replaced
I was thinking last night and I do have a friend with a switch
Okay so no idea about it
It's not about the brand nor the tech, it has to be in it.
But, I won’t be seeing them anytime soon
Wait
@blissful narwhal does the charger that comes with the Pro Controller have PD?
Oh borrowing an original AC adapter is the best to test
The Pro con doesn't come with a charger, it comes with a cable
Yes I know
And they do include in it. Like I said, it's a decade old tech.
Listen,
Charger = whole thing. Cable and power supply.
That’s what I mean when I say charger
So
That's beyond the point @flint oracle
Even if it's an old tech, plenty of charger nowadays do not have it. Some uses their proprietary tech like Fast charging by Samsung or Warp charging by OPPO. You have to read the specs.
But the Pro con has no charger that comes with it, so Idk which one you are referring to?
Wait, are you in EU?
Is it the power supply that has PD, or the cable?
The power brick
Ah nevermind then
I have seen that even MacBook chargers work for Switch charging
As long as you have a USB c
It's even listed in our recommend charger/power bank
That's actually a dangerous way to think about it. Remember that tons of power supply still use USB-C and employ USB 2.0. May not be macbook newer gen though.
Here's a list if you want to take a look

@blissful narwhal I reset the AC adapter again earlier. It’s currently plugged in directly to the wall. I’m gonna give it a full 12 hours.
But the list is not conclusive, you can use any power supply that has PD
Hmm what is that power extension you used previously?
Although I doubt it has any effect but just to be sure
If not, I’ll try another AC adapter. My friend has a switch and I’ll see if I can use his AC adapter
Yep, that'd be best
Just an average extension cord
Yeah that should not affect anything unless the whole power grid got some fluctuation
and even if that to happen, it would affect your other devices plugging into it as well
Yeah exactly
So it’s either the AC Adapter or the switch.
I’m praying it’s just the AC adapter.
But hey, at least im under warranty and I can get it repaired for free.
Yep, so for now:
- Test it with a different original AC adapter or PD charger.
- Wait for it to charge backup with your current AC adapter.
- If not, log a repair ._.
The repair is free right
Will I have to pay for shipping?
It is but make sure to go through the repair guide line
A lot of tidbits you have to deal with
go back up your save data
The one you sent?
Yep, here it is again

Alright. We leave the resort tomorrow. I’m gonna keep it charging for the rest of the day. If not, I’ll try my friends.
Good luck
You don't happen to play Pokemon, Animal Crossing or Splatoon?
I play ACNH.
Oh shoot.
Is there a way to do an island backup?

no, read the guide in the link haha
Good luck, mate
Yeah it’s been awhile now. Still no sign of charging.
Luckily it’s at like 80%, so I can still backup whatever I need
Hey @blissful narwhal! I’m home
So I think it is the AC Adapter
I haven’t tried out another adapter yet, my friend hasn’t responded
However, I plugged the AC adapter into the dock like normal, and it wasn’t giving power to charge my Pro Controller either, or any power to the dock in general.
That’s giving me hope that it’s just the AC adapter!!
I see, that's good to know. Well, not much we can do till we can test it further.
The Pro controller test is smart lol
The AC adapter was designed to only work with NIntendo's products, and nothing else
so if you plug it into other stuffs it may create issues
I also plugged my phone charger into the dock as a power test (it doesnt charge, but it does give soem power). No power was received
So im 90% sure its the AC adapter
Should I further test it??? Or should I just order a new AC adapter now
Well, I'd still try to test it with a different AC adapter
A new AC adapter would cost quite a lot more
And what if it's not the AC adapter?
Then I return the new one and send the switch to Nintendo
My friend still hasn’t responded either so
I probs won’t be able to test it till this weekend
Darn, surely you can get some other charger with PD on it?
It's a relative popular tech ;_;
I just don’t wanna risk 3rd party
I know you can
But I don’t trust it 😭
Plus didn’t it say in the guide that the official Nintendo ac adapter is best for the docked mode?
Yeah but who said you have to test or charge it using dock mode?
Well, up to you, you can get a new AC adapter
OH you meant testing
just cost more time
I thought you meant long term
AND charging
In handheld
Heck, you can get a compatible 3rd party charger that will work on the dock just fine
You know how people fear things they don't understand?
Could you send some links to a couple of them?
like a shadow in the dark, you can't see it, so it's scary?
Amazon specifically
I write those articles to give people information so they can stop fearing the things they don't understand. But eh I guess the guides didn't do it work well 😔
Nah more like you can find some around you
Since PD is very common in modern day chargers
from tablet, smartphone
Many Apple's charger has it
I don’t have anything USB-C though other than my switch
Ah then doesn't matter
yeah just buy a new AC adapter then
maybe that's all the problem
Good that you have that option
But damn, I read recently about how all of those "returned" product become waste and got sold in lots
And do note, if it's something on your Switch, it can be expensive to repair
you still have warranty?
Yeah
oh that's nice then
For NA, yes
Then yes I’m still under warranty
Now you’re saying I can use a 3rd party PD adapter/cable long term, right?
With the dock too
Yes, but you need to check the specs
Could you just send me a couple that you know work?
If any
Or would it be easier for me to just buy the official one
Wait isn't they are on the charging guide?
Yes but I’m lazy 😭

But you don't have to buy these now
Again, what I asked is for you to find something similar to test
these things are for when you have a need for them
like you want a portable, smaller charger that not only can charge your Switch but all the other devices you would bring with you to travel
or you want to create a power bank setup that can work in place without power
I do have a couple power banks
However I don’t have the boxes so idk if they have PD
Check if they have Power delivery then
Look on the sides of them
they should have the specs listed
Lemme finish eating and I’ll go look and see
Now, would a laptop USB port have PD?
I don’t think so but it’s worth asking
Possible but it's rare
Like very rare
Since people don't often do fast charging from laptop
My laptop is an HP Pavilion x360 Convertible
Probably not
I’ll just check the power banks
That's very helpful
same one?
I can get the exact model number hold on
YO.
Your laptop is 14-dw1030na?
Let me check hold on
I think so but I don’t have any USB-C to USB-C cables
Only USB-A to USB-C
But yes it does
Not on the USB A though.
Yeah, your laptop can charger your Switch, but only on USB-C port
that icon is a super speed fast charging USB-C
Well I don’t have a USB C to USB C
If you cant find one then just buy the original AC adapter to test then
Still sweet that my laptop has PD tho
It should be more popular 😔
Very handy to have
Well, at least now you know you can charger your Switch with your laptop
Although Idk what voltage it can do
enough for handheld though
My mom said she’ll make sure it’s okay with my dad before I buy the ac adapter
I’ll let yk
Good luck
@blissful narwhal I know I technically shouldn’t, but just for a very quick test, I plugged my switch in through my laptops USB-A port, and what do ya know, it charges!
Meaning it is the AC Adapter
So yay!
lmao I really don't know if you are scare of using 3rd party charger or not
Well, that's good then
I used my pro controller cable lol
The cable only plays a small part
but don't worry, you just plug it in once, doesn't cause much issue
@blissful narwhal 8 days omg
Is there anywhere else I can order it from???
That ships fast + has free shipping
I don’t wanna let my switch completely die

Would that cable work with the zPower turbo adapter?
It has PD.
Buy from Anker, Aukey, Ugreen, Baseus. Don't buy random brands.
but the zpower one is literally in the recommended list
OH YOU MEAN
THE CABLE
mb
And make sure to see if those charger has cable included
That charger literally has one lol
its only 5ft tho
i want at least 6
Ah up to you
it has great reviews though
over 2,000 too
still amost 5 stars
and listen
anker is good
but they are expensive as hell
I honestly do know understand you lol
Do you want to be careful or not?
Like actually
You are afraid of using 3rd party adapter/charger but hey let's just buy random shit and plug it in regardless.
54.99 for a 2 port adapter just because it has fast charging???
thats overpriced 100%
you dont have to be an asshole about it
but okay

It's even cheaper
why did you expect me to run to amazon 3 seconds after you sent it
Fine, good luck
so, youd say this is good?
@blissful narwhal
i feel like i can just get a better deal out of it than the official one, works with dock the same as official, and wont take over a week to arrive
Is the switch docking to a tv?
No lol
But we already figured it out
It’s my AC adapter
Will say that if it doesn’t dock to a TV normally it could be your actual charge port
The switch charges completely fine
I tested it last night
It’s the AC Adapter
It’s not docking to the TV because the AC Adapter isn’t giving any power to the dock lol
Yep. I was gonna get 3rd party, but my dad ended up going to walmart today, and turns out they had one more AC Adapter there, so ill be able to charge again today!
Noice
@blissful narwhal Got the official AC adapter, walmart had one in stock. It charges fine now!
She’s up and running!
Ayyyyyy
@blissful narwhal Final ping. Sorry. I just wanted to thank you for the help. I noticed you unfriended and blocked me lmao. I still thought I should say thank you.
Yeah, I did that because after hours of helping you, you still keep calling me being assholery for... complaining about you not following advices and being wishy washy about your decisions. I prefer not to waste my time anymore than that.
TL:DR:
I don’t appreciate the way you spoke to me because I didn’t know everything.
I’m sorry? I’m not as techy as you. Still new to the whole switch ecosystem. I didn’t fucking appreciate the way that you were speaking to me before. That’s why I called you an asshole, because there well, were a couple times where you lost your shit because I was confused and didn’t know something I guess im supposed to automatically know/do???
You got mad because I didn’t check out your cable recommendations the nanosecond you sent them
That IS assholey and I don’t appreciate it.
If you can’t handle people not knowing everything, and complain directly to that person about it then why are you helping people? The way you’re acting shows that you expect everyone to know everything. They’re asking for help for a reason.
I never expect anyone to be knowledgeable when they seek help in this place. That's the whole reason why I keep representing those guides, they are written in the simplest way possible, to provide you with the information you lack and lead you to make a good decision on your own (If you do read them, that is) Plus I am always ready to provide more info if you ask.
You come in with a bias that you have to use original charger for all of your devices, and I respect that. It's a safe practice even in the lack of technical understanding. So I went along with that.
But multiple times you betray your own belief as well as the advices you were given. You tested your device on a random USB port. And when we both agreed on the course of action: Buying the original AC adapter to replace it, suddenly you changed that decision to a recommended charger. I guess that's fine, too, at least that's also safe. But then you wanted to buy a random brand cable. In all of these decisions you made, why didn't you ask about them at all? Isn't it wise to ask for advices on things you don't know? How do I follow your decisions? This is why I'm annoyed.
So in the end, which direction you want to go? Going along with your previous bias, my advices or just do whatever the heck you want?
The reason I switched up (no pun intended) with the 3rd party and original branded products throughout was BECAUSE you helped and convinced me to be able to do so. I just never explained that because explaining how I’ve felt is something I’ve genuinely always struggled with since I was little.
And it’s not just a random USB port lmao. It’s my laptop USB port. You act like my switch is going to spontaneously combust and then burn my whole house down with everything in it just because I did a split second test to make sure I didn’t have to spend $100 or more on a repair.
Thirdly, I actually looked into the “random branded” cable. I checked the specs. I made sure it had power delivery like I learned from you, and then went to you for advice about said randomly branded cable to make sure.
You acted like an asshole and that I did everything wrong
I think the majority of this argument is because of misunderstanding.
Again, why do you even make those random decisions when your own belief and my advices go against that?
I was very close minded at the start and learned more through out. That’s why I was so indecisive. Because I was still learning things.
and if you decided to do something, without reconfirm or ask for advices. Isn't that reckless for someone who claim to be not as techy as me?
I don’t understand
That doesn’t make since in general. I did ask for advice and made sure to confirm
I did not confirm you can plug it into any USB port, as well your previous belief it can damage the Switch.
Yes but, I made sure to emphasize the fact that I wasn’t going to continuously use that as a charging source because if my belief that I know it can damage the switch. I used what I had resource wise. I plugged it in for like, a half a second to make sure it charged and then unplugged
Again, like I said, the majority of this is just miscommunication, and things that just weren’t communicated at all
And who don't communicate?
Me. And I fully admit that
Unlike you, who are still yet to admit to being wrong for your wrong-doings.
So are we going to let this go, and learn for the better in the future?
Or are we going to continue arguing like babies over a fucking Nintendo Switch.
I choose the first option.
I do not feel like my advices are respected if you just decide to do things on your own against all that. And heck, I was going along with your original bias, which I think is perfectly fine.
I just feel like giving your advices, agree on a course of action which then you ignore is really annoying.
Fine, I'll archive this
I never did anything against your advice that you spoke out about. When I did do something you didn’t mention, I made sure to go to you for said advice first
There was never any intended disrespect from myself.
And I apologize for any disrespect that was given
But you could’ve just told me nicely instead of treating me that way.
I hope we can end this here, learn from the mistakes and continue being friends.
