The partner was arrested in the apartment and had a firearm. The suspect is a Norwegian doctor and he and Janne had been together for about 10 years. They met in 2014 while Janne was at home in Finland for the summer, as he normally played in QMJHL in Canada.

Janne Puhakka was the first Finnish hockey player to publicly come out as homosexual. He came out in 2019 after his retirement.

Janne played one season in Liiga (Blues) and has won bronze in the Junior World Championship 2013. He has also played in the U20 World Championship
