#

Deshaun Watson lost 25 expected points from turnovers and sacks against the Steelers. This number is in the bottom 1st percentile since 2018.

#

"Deshaun Watson’s 25 expected points lost to turnovers and sacks is a jaw-dropping number. That number is in the bottom 1st percentile since 2018, and he also lost an additional 5.3 expected points on non-fumble designed runs and scrambles, including two 15-yard penalties for grabbing an opponent’s facemask. Watson generated some value through the air, but was inaccurate generally (-7.5% CPOE) and hasn’t shown any signs of breaking out of his post-suspension slump. I’m not closing the book on Watson returning to the elite form we saw from 2017-2020, but if he continues to play this way, the Browns combination of trade value and contract given away to acquire Watson will go down as one of the worst personnel moves in NFL history."

Seattle and Texas (who the Red Sox just faced) are both 84-68 meaning the Red Sox could only tie them and since they are playing each other (7 games but 1 is enough) the Red Sox have been officially eliminated. #

An underrated feature on BaseballSavant is the travel measurement animator thing, which i used to measure the travel of each team old Dusty has played for or coached by season. I believe he's got the longest career of anyone in the MLB, and simply has to have traveled a farther distance than pretty much anyone in human history that didn't fly themselves there. He's traveled to the moon and back 4 times and around the earth 75 times. Per the internet, the most traveled person ever is likely a pilot named Bob Morris who's flown 4 million miles for around 35,000 flight hours. By that measure, Dusty's flown 15,750 hours, which is 656 days. And yes, as I learned today, baseball teams have been flying place to place for a longgg time.

The same source says Alonso is seeking a 10-year deal, but the Mets have been unwilling to meet him on this number so far. Alonso will turn 29-years-old in December, so a decade long contract would bring him up to 39, which could be why the Mets are currently reluctant to go there.

Ronald Acuña Jr. is now the 4th player in history (and 2nd this season) to have 100 RBIs as a leadoff hitter. Joining 2023 Mookie Betts, 2017 Charlie Blackmon and 2000 Darin Erstad.
[4:38 AM]

#

Pretty neat that it had only happened twice before and now two more times this season. The record is 103 by Blackmon (he had 104 total, but one of them came while hitting in the 3 spot) and Betts currently, Betts and Acuña will almost surely end up as 1st and 2nd on the leaderboard after the season is done. Erstad had exactly 100 in 2000.

Batters have 0 hits in their last 39 AB vs. the @Padres' Blake Snell, the longest streak by an MLB starter since he himself held foes hitless for 41 straight AB in Aug/Sep 2021.

Only one other pitcher in last 50 years has had 2 streaks of 39+: Nolan Ryan (47 in 1975, 40 in 1990)

The Giants did not run the ball on first down in the first half once

#

With 9-10 games left to go, we could potentially see the first 3 way divisional tie

#

This week in the AL West the Rangers, Astros, and Mariners have the chance to do the very first 3 way tie for the division. In order for this to happen the Mariners and Rangers will have to go 5-5 and the Astros will have to go 4-5 for their final games. The Mariners and Rangers play against each other for their last 7 of 10, with both of them only playing series against division rivals (Angels v. Rangers, Mariners v. Astros). Depending on the divisional results posted by each team would decide the 3 way tie. If the Rangers at least win 2/7 against the Mariners they will have the tie breaker against the Mariners. Astros have the tiebreaker over the Rangers. Finally the Mariners have the tiebreaker over the Astros. So in order to decide the division winner in this situation it would come down to divisional record, which would go to the Mariners.

#

Entering their Final 10 Games, the Seattle Mariners, per FanGraphs, have almost equal odds to Win the Division (30.4%), Win a Wild Card Spot (34.4%), or Miss the Playoffs Entirely (35.2%)

#

Based on the performance of the team over the past three months, M's fans have had no idea how to view this team. From dominating in July and August to skidding into September, the team's been all over the place.

As it turns out, the probability can't make up it's mind either. We basically have just as much of a shot of winning division as we do of missing the dance entirely.

So for this final stretch, Seattle will have to rely on what they've known best over their final few games: Chaos Ball

#

The A's must win at least 8 of their last 10 games to avoid setting the franchise low mark in winning percentage during the Kansas City--Oakland era (1955-2023)

#

That mark is owned, surprisingly, not by any of the Kansas City A's teams, but by the 1979 Oakland A's, who went 54-108 for a 0.333 WP. However, the 1956 KC A's were a very close second, at 52-102, for a 0.338 WP, back during the 154 game schedule days.

The A's remaining schedule includes four at the Colliseum against the Tigers starting tonight, and then three each at the Twins and the Angels.

It is very strange seeing the A's having a season like this one, given their tremendous success in Oakland in particular; the few years in the late 1970s are the only period that approach it.
