The story of Trey Lance is shaping to be a historic catastrophe in the modern day NFL.

The 49ers traded up for him in a MASSIVE trade package to select him 3rd overall in the 2021 NFL Draft over QBs Mac Jones and Justin Fields

Lance then sat behind Jimmy G for majority of his rookie season developing.

In the 2022 off-season he was named the team’s starting QB, with Jimmy G likely to be traded…

After not being able to find a trade partner for Jimmy G, he then returned to the 49ers to back up Trey Lance.

Lance started week 1 for the 49ers in a monsoon against the Chicago Bears and struggled.

In week 2, Lance suffered an awful season ending injury.

Jimmy G then started the majority of the regular season until the LAST PICK of the 2022 NFL Draft Brock Purdy would come in and BALL OUT for the 49ers leading them to the NFC Championship game.

Purdy when then go on to suffer a horrible elbow injury in the NFC Championship game, but his performances in the games prior cemented himself as the QB 1 for the 49ers.

Fast forward to today, Trey Lance was just named the QB 3 behind Sam Darnold on the 49ers depth chart for the 2023 season.

What a wild ride it’s been for the former number 3 overall pick who’s still started less than 5 full games in his career

The Yankees won their 62nd game, which eliminates the A's with their 91 losses. Let's explore why.

If the A's win out, they get to 71 wins, which is already behind TEX/HOU/BAL/TBR and can only tie the Mariners for the final card spot. In addition, the Blue Jays, Red Sox, and Yankees have 70, 68, and 62 wins with 13 games left to play against each other. Therefore, they must average at least (70+68+62+13)/3 = 71 wins. That means either one of them reaches 72 wins (which would eliminate the A's) or they all end at 71 wins.

Now, for the A's to make it, they must win a tiebreaker that involves SEA/TOR/BOS/NYY. If it were only those 5 teams, then Boston wins the tiebreaker. Of the various teams that can be added (LAA and whichever 4 AL Central teams don't win the division), the best set of teams to add is LAA/CHW/DET/KCR. When you do this (no matter how you decide the remaining games amongst LAA/CHW/DET/KCR that aren't mandatory to get into this scenario), the A's end up being tied with the Red Sox for the lead in Head-to-Head, at 37-27. Unsurprisingly, there isn't a procedure telling me what to do when Head-to-Head doesn't resolve a 9-team tiebreaker, but Rule 34(c)(C)(i)(aa) says that if two teams are tied after looking at Head-to-Head, you revert to the 2-team tiebreaker between those teams, which starts with Head-to-Head. The Red Sox are 4-2 against the A's, so the A's can't win the tiebreaker.

The Oakland A's are the first team to be eliminated this season.

Through April 30th, Marcell Ozuna's slashline was an unfathomable .091/.206/.218 and he was losing playing time to Sam Hilliard. While his batted-ball numbers were rosier, Ozuna has historically underperformed those numbers, and given his dwindling playing time, it seemed like there was a decent chance the Braves would finally eat the final $32 million of his contract and DFA him.
