The Mets Starting Lineup and Pitcher Against their Biggest Rival in what was Supposed to be a Crucial Series for the Division Title

#

Over his last four games, Yordan Alvarez has had 19 PAs with 25 total men on base. Only two of those PAs have advanced a runner, and he only has one RBI.

#

Small sample size, but I do not remember a cold streak like this for the RBI machine. He has two singles (one with no one on and another with two men on that loaded the bases) and a walk (with two men on). His lone RBI was on a bases loaded ground out.

He has only 8 RBI in 14 games since returning from injury. He had 55 RBI in 57 games before the injury.

Could he still be feeling the oblique?

#

Fernando Valenzuela from 1981 to 1986

#

From 1981-1986 Fernando Valenzuela went 97-68. He had 84 (!) complete games and 26 shutouts. He had an ERA just below 3.00, averaged a WHIP of 1.18 and an FIP of 2.85. He put up 27 WAR, averaging 4.5 per season. He led the league in batters faced twice (also led the league in this category in 1987), was second 2 times, third once and fifth once. He was top 5 in innings pitched (1st once, 2nd three times, 3rd and 5th once each) and was top 4 in strikeouts each year. He made the All Star team in each of those seasons, finished top 5 in Cy Young voting 4 times, received MVP votes 4 times, won 2 Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove (led the league in range factor for pitchers 3 times, 2nd once). He started 200 games and threw a combined 1537 innings over those 6 seasons. He remains the only player in history to have won the Cy Young Award, the Rookie of the Year Award and a World Series in the same season.

In terms of potentially falling out of a playoff spot this is the lowest point of the Jays season since the 11-0 loss to the Marlins in June

t that point they were 4 games over 500.

They've somehow been better in July and yet they might be out of a playoff spot.

Also, on the verge of losing 4 games in a row for the first time in months.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan not concerned after third-round pick Jake Moody misses two FGs in preseason opener: "He's been great in practice. He's hit them all."

#

The current rule contemplates the making of “forcible” contact, without the requirement that the player be the one to initiate the contact. It also encompasses any part of the helmet, including the facemask. The 2023 rule appears below.

“It is a foul if a player: (a) lowers his head and makes forcible contact with his helmet against an opponent; or (b) uses any part of his helmet or facemask to butt or make forcible contact to an opponent’s head or neck area. These provisions do not prohibit incidental contact by the mask or the helmet in the course of a conventional tackle or block on an opponent.”

The rule rarely gets enforced during games. It is enforced far more regularly by the league office, via fines and warnings issued after games. In 2022, for example, there were 229 total fines and warnings for lowering the helmet — but only four penalties called during games.

Of the fines, half were rescinded on appeal. Also, 48 percent of the fines were issued to running backs.

#

The 49ers Believe in Brock Purdy Even More Than Most People Realize

#

'Blind Side' subject Michael Oher alleges his adoption was a lie, family took all the film proceeds

#

Damn that story is actually legitimately fucked up. Supposedly they told him they were adopting him but in reality they were having him sign away his ability to make business deals so that they could profit off him while also not actually adopting him.

#

Kyle Shanahan: It took about three games for Brock Purdy to show he was our best QB

#

But 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says it quickly became very apparent last year that Purdy — not Jimmy Garoppolo, not Lance — was the best quarterback on the 49ers’ roster, and that Purdy was going to stay the starter even if Garoppolo or Lance had healed from their injuries quickly enough to play in the postseason.

“That was never going to change,” Shanahan told Albert Breer of SI.com. “It took about three games.”

Shanahan said the only question the 49ers had this offseason about Purdy was whether his injured elbow would heal in time for him to start Week One — not whether he’ll start if healthy, which he absolutely will.

“He’s been [the starter] since last year ended,” Shanahan said of Purdy. “He was always clearly our starter, but there were so many questions about his injury, how he’d come back from it, that we didn’t even know if he’d be ready for this year, so we had to prepare for everything else. I mean, Trey was the guy we gave the keys to last year, so we were definitely excited to have him in a situation [to play], and we also didn’t know if Brock would be back, so we needed someone to come in and at least compete with Trey, and give us a chance, because Trey was hurt last year, and just got cleared before OTAs. That’s why we brought Sam in here. And those guys have been competing their butts off, and I feel great playing with those guys. But like I told them, like I’ve said to media, like I said to everyone since Day 1, based on what Brock did on tape last year, it’s hard to beat that out in practice.”

Teddy Bridgewater says he'll wear No. 50 for the Lions | Every jersey between 0 and 19, the only numbers allowed by the league for a QB, is either already taken by an active player or retired

#

Bridgewater participated in his first practice on Monday, rocking a red jersey with no number on it. He’s now listed on the team’s roster as wearing No. 50.

It’s not exactly a number associated with a quarterback, but Bridgewater is embracing the unusual. He was asked after his first practice what number he will wear in Detroit.

“I’m going to wear No. 50,” Bridgewater said through laughter. “I’m going to wear 50, man.”

There is some reasoning behind the odd number: none of the traditional QB numbers are available. Every jersey between 0 and 19, the only numbers allowed by the league for a QB, is either already taken by an active player or retired. Defensive players occupy 1,2,4 and 6 right now, so they are the only numbers that Bridgewater would be allowed to double up on during the preseason.

We’ll see if Bridgewater can roll with the exotic No. 50 jersey when the Lions play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday after two days of joint practices in Allen Park later this week.
