Here's the story: "Fresh off a 31-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks — a humiliating drubbing that dropped Urb’s crew to 1-6 — the Jaguars’ defense held a “Come to Jesus” meeting. Obviously, something needed to change. Now. Or this season would be effectively over. A slew of players chimed in with their thoughts, and Wingard’s take? The Jaguars had a rookie quarterback (in Trevor Lawrence), a rookie head coach (in Meyer), and it was on the defense to help them out. Quite benign. He wasn’t taking a shot. It was an indisputable fact that Meyer had never coached in the NFL before.

Word got back to Meyer.

That Monday night, the safety’s phone rang. Caller ID indicated that position coach, Chris Ash, was calling. Wingard answered, and… a different voice greeted him. It was Meyer.

“He says, ‘Dewey, why the hell did you call me a rookie head coach? Tell me why. If it was anybody else right now, you’d already be cut,’” Wingard relives. “Explain yourself to me is essentially what he said. So I had to freaking save face and tell him how much I love him and how he’s the greatest coach ever. … You’re sitting there on your off-night chilling and you get a call from your head coach: ‘Hey, I’m going to cut you if you don’t apologize for calling me a rookie head coach.’”

The threat was real. If Wingard didn’t apologize, he was toast.

The next day, the two met and Wingard told Meyer everything he wanted to hear."

This grand experiment was doomed early.

Players knew Meyer was in over his head one week into the season, when they were blasted by the Houston Texans, 37-21.

The coach’s behavior before this loss — and especially after — was full proof he had zero clue how to navigate through this new terrain.

“All summer, you would’ve f--king thought we were playing Bethune-Cookman and that we were going to win 80-0,” Wingard says. “He didn’t understand the NFL. When we lost that game, we had a meeting and basically — every plan he laid out for the season — in that one meeting, after one loss, he’s like, ‘It’s over. We’re resetting the whole thing. This is the most important meeting of my career. This is called a reset meeting. We’re going to reset everything after one loss.’”

There were many blank stares, yes.

Details emerge of Yankees’ Domingo German inciden

#

The incident that led to the Yankees placing pitcher Domingo German on the restricted list on Wednesday occurred at Yankee Stadium and was not a domestic situation, clubhouse sources say.

On Tuesday evening of this week, German grew belligerent while in the clubhouse at Yankee Stadium, though there is no word of an altercation with a teammate or other individuals. Witnesses determined that German was under the influence of alcohol and did not appear in control of his emotions.

Several Yankees, including GM Brian Cashman, manager Aaron Boone and ace Gerrit Cole, appeared visibly shaken when asked about German on Wednesday.

German’s behavior on Tuesday was not connected to the armpit injury that led the Yankees to scratch him from Monday’s start, then insert him into the game in the fifth inning, sources said.

By Wednesday, German had entered inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse.
