I selected one army (Giants, Bombers, Cannon Cart), and have always been leveling that one army. Once those troops are maxed, I rush to the next BH. I also rush earlier sometimes.

As far as the pros and cons of rushing BH go:
Pros:
Better value on power potions (laboratory permitting), runes (storage permitting).
Better value on books and hammers, as they can be used on higher level upgrades that take longer and cost more.
More passive loot from collectors and mines.
Easier to focus on only the troops needed for your main attack strategy.
Upgrade and get more out of the clock tower.
Get and extra builder faster.
Cons
It costs resources to place all of the buildings required to rush.
Might be harder to learn as you progress.

Defense works both ways. More buildings can slow the enemy down and the enemy needs to destroy more buildings to get to the 50% star. Also, lower level buildings give more DPS for the resource cost But, you defenses need to cover a larger area.

I highly recommend rushing. Resources are the limiting factor when it comes to how long it takes to max. The only ways to increase how much resources you get is increasing in trophies, getting more value with magic items, and getting more passive loot with mines and collectors. Also note that if you care much more about your main, getting the OTTO is the by far the most important, and rushing will get it faster.

in fact, not rushing is reeeally suboptimal (is a better word than "stupid"). Upgrading defense take way more time and resources than upgrading a single army, so upgrading offense make you push trophies way faster than defense. A new builder hall level gives you new great defenses (Roaster, Giant Cannon, Mega Testla, Lava Laucher) and new cheap defenses that make way more impact in your trophies than upgrading existent ones. A new double cannon cost 20,000 gold, 10 min and give you 84 damage/s and 600hp, upgrading it to lvl 7 cost 2,200,000 gold, 2 days, and give you 14 damage/s and 181 hp. You really think is better to upgrade you double cannon to max at bh7 or rush the faster you can to bh8?
Rushing gives you more passive resources with the collectors. Is not minimal, at bh7 you get a max of 6000/hour, at bh9 you get double. extra 6000 resources per hour means 144,000 per day (without Clock Tower). To compensate that passive income in versus battle, you would need to get +1600 trophies at least.
So, rushing push trophies faster and gives more passive resources.
