I'm tying to paint the same thing as in the image, but im kinda lost as to what the best way to create the same gray/black effect would be. I currently have Chaos black primer (looks very black (not sure if its to much)) but than im also confused as to how i can add the grayish effect. im new to painting overall so im not that well versed in the lingo. if anyone has any idea's on what would be a good way to tackle this let me know ❤️

Somethings i could use advice on would be. Any addional tips are always welcome 🙂

What brushing technique could i use best (only using brushes no airbrush)
Any specific paints you would recommend
would chaos black primer be good as a base coat or is it to dark

@placid turret you should deffinetly try using sponges
it's a great alternative to an airbrush and i think i could look great

I think in general it’s better to look up references of the actual thing you want to paint, instead of a painted version of the thing you want to paint.

Like in the current image, I’m having trouble understanding what material the artist was aiming for - it looks a bit like marble, but it has lost its definition.

If you want it to look like rocks (which I believe is what the monolith is made of in the game) then I wouldn’t try to paint it like in the above image.

But yes, prime in black, and then start layering in browns, yellows, etc. You can see how I pulled some of the colours out of a reference image.

How new to painting are you? Do the above instructions make sense or would it be helpful if I added more detail?

I'm very new, I also struggle sometimes to find the "right color" so if it wouldn't be to much of a ask some more details would help. So far what im aiming for is that mainly the color's match and that it looks "okay/good", I think im a bit to inexperienced to capture the exact materials just yet. I only painted 1 simple figurine so far and this took me quite some time.

My main goal is to make something that looks nice and doesn't need to be reflecting the actual materials in game, if it looks more like rocks than marble than this is fine for me since im still new to painting still need to learn everything :).

Also the person above suggesting using sponges however im unsure as to what that entails like just grab a actuall spongen and put paint on that? (ill have to google this for some more details)

For some additional info on what my idea/plan was so far which could be very very wrong.

I was thinking of printing it in white than priming it with my chaos black primer from citadel (base coat)
than i wanted to use light gray to add some light touches of color differences onto the main structure the monolith. (i was thinking of doing this using a brush with a little amount of paint to slowly dip the gray into the black)
than try to paint as best i can only the letters and the ridges with a gold/yellow paint I have without it bleeding to much into the rest

here are the only other figurine's i have painted, the little ones were the first 2 where i practices with differente amounts of water to see how it would effect the application and colours etc to learn more about thinning my paint. and the bigger one is where I gave it my all, sadly with the golden cuffs i had some bleeding into the brown areas, but these figurines are in my option alot easier paint wise ("i could be wrong")

I wouldn’t bother with sponge painting until you’re deeper into the hobby.

For your second figure just use a brush, you’re still brand new so you’re still learning brush control (painting neatly).

Your plan is good - prime black, then I would do the gold lettering so that you can paint over any overspill with blacks/grays to tidy it up.

At the second figure in your hobby journey it really is all about you putting paint on a model vs trying to ask for a recipe or step by step process. You’ll have to experiment a bit early on to learn how the paint works.

I would agree and disagree
Tbh sponges for large and flat panels are going to be by far the best option there
It's going to be much harder to achieve the desired result using just a brush

But anyways he could probably grab a couple
Considering how cheap they are
