So I've looked through the wiki on the reddit and have gotten some ideas for what to purchase, however I'm wanting something larger as its my first time painting and I want a larger canvas. The only things I can find are 28mm which seem awful small for a first project, especially with the amount of details they pack in that small little frame. Does anyone have any recommendations for unpainted figures or minis that are closer to 50mm? I had seen some promise from WizKid and Reaper Miniatures but they don't list the size of the minis. Thanks again for this question I'm sure gets asked a ton.

28mm is usually what’s listed as the scale - this means a regular human being from feet to eyes will be 28mm tall. So if you buy a monster of some sort, they’ll be scaled against a 28mm human and likely much closer to that 50mm size you’re looking for. Alternatively, if you’ve got a local game store, drop in and have a look in person coz Wizkid and Reaper are very commonly stocked.

There are lots of 55 & 75mm scale figures too.

Or you could look into busts.

Tehnolog makes cheap 54mm minis. I just painted their set of 4 werewolves AKA "Moon Wolfens".

If you are painting for tabletop, you can get away with 32-35mm and it will generally still fit in the squares. Honestly, I think 28 is fine for a first project since you'll need better technique to make those larger minis look good. Brush control, avoiding texture, shadows, glazing, highlights are all techniques you can work just fine on a small mini.

There are lower-detail 28mm scale ones too, if you're more comfortable with that. Random-ish examples:
