Hi,
I'm new here and looking for painting advice. This is the second miniature I've painted, and I'm seeking constructive criticism and tips on what I can improve. I still struggle with layering and edge highlighting. With each new miniature, I want to improve something and keep getting better at painting.

Let me know if you'd like any refinements!

This is my first model

The gold is just a base coat + wash yeah?

#

same with the silver?

For your second mini, this is excellent! Both of your techniques just need more practice.

Maybe try a little bit less paint on the brush when you edge highlight. You can control how much paint you have on by painting your thumb, or unloading some of the paint onto a paper towel.

You can make some improvements by adding some depth to the armor with some washes. A brown or reddish wash like agrax earthshade, or seraphim sepia, or who knows maybe even reikland fleshshade, can add some interesting tones to the deeper parts of your armor. You can then bring back some of the gold by painting gold on the raised areas, and then edge highlight. The same can be done on the steel with something like nuln oil or drakenhof nightshade instead.

For the base, there are many techniques out there to try out. You can add washes for some shadows, you can paint on some scratches, you can add some filters to the rocks so they're less chunky, etc. The base is your playground!

@hoary jolt Going to go out on a limb and say you are doing the standard retributor gold + reikland flesh shade combo. This is good, but you can push the effect further. Washes shouldn't ever really be the final step in your painting.

I would drybrush the whole thing in retributor gold again, then a brighter gold like bright gold from pro acryl. then you can really carefully edge highlight with a silver to really push the shine

So edge should be the last technic on my model ?

reikland flesh shade dulls down those highlights you just worked hard to put on

#

do wash then highlight

Yes, washes can be glossy, but you might be using too much paint on your brush.

Ok I try this order next time. I have also one problem with metallic paint. I have the impression that the paint dries very slowly. Additionally, it comes off quite easily when doing dry brushing.

That sounds a bit strange again

#

What is your process, start to finish right now?

#

You assemble the mini, then what?

Ok. I'm not sure what that is exactly, so I won't advise against this spray immediately.

#

All I'm going to say is that there are aerosol primers designed with miniatures in mind

#

The most popular ones are from Citadel/Games Workshop, or Vallejo. See whichever one you can find cheapest, buy one can, and see if that makes a difference in the strength of your metallics.

#

At least for me, I've only ever rubbed off the old vallejo air metallics formula.

Ok, thanks

#

I'm really grateful for the advice, I’ll take it onboard and come back with the next iteration 😄

The rest of your process is fine, except that I still think you should not shade last. You ought to at least highlight after a shade
