#Question about "paint order"

Hey gang, I almost assembled all my Ork Boyz however I struggle a bit with order of applying the paints.
From what I gather so far, I need to prime them first, no problems there (couldn't find newbie Chaos Black, so I'm using Grey Seer)
However afterwards I can see there's a PLETHORA of paints being used. For instace, I downloaded the Citadel Colour App and I see they apply the following order:
Undercoat - Basecoat - Shade - Basing.
For additional "prettiness" they add 3 different highlights of 4-5 paints each.
My question is, am I meant to "mix" all these colors together in several layers? Or am I supposed to use just one just multiple layers?

For example, in the app for skin of the Ork Boyz they use Green as mixture of Undercoat (Chaos Black), Basecoat (Waaagh! Flesh) and Shade (Biel-Tan Green)
Is this "proper" method of painting or can I just apply the basecoat and call it a day 😄

Depends entirely on how far you want to take your mini and what your goals are - this is a subjective hobby, there is no objectively correct path or result. Don’t follow those Citadel guides they aren’t super realistic.

The jist though is:

  • Base Coat
  • Optional Wash
  • if using Wash Reapply Base coat avoiding shadow areas
  • Start layering up to your highlight colours. Covering a little bit less of the previous layer with the new layer each time.

What this does is give the model contrast (the difference in value between shadow and highlight) which improves visibility of the model.

That being said, the absolute best thing you can do for yourself as a new painter is to put paint on models.

You will learn far more by experimenting with the paints yourself than you will watching tutorials. This is not to say that tutorials are unhelpful, just more so that painting is a physical skill you need to develop through practice.

Gotcha! Thanks a ton yeah I will definitely get to the "put pain on models" part I just really wasn't sure how to start the whole process.

So Basecoat -> Wash -> reapply Basecoat, avoiding where the wash has been -> highlighting stuff.

Can you give me some example paints for Ork Boyz, in particular Evil Sunz cause I like the red on green schematic 😄

Also, you don't have to use the, very expensive, Citadel paints.
There are many brands that are as good as these and much cheaper.

Yes as Antinea mentioned any of these brands are as good or better than Citadel and cost less money.

In terms of specific colours I am not familiar with what Evil Sunz is (I don’t paint a tonne of GW stuff) so my recommendation is to use something like Adobe colour picker and select the palette from a reference photo. Alternatively look up the Citadel “recipe” and then just try to colour match with other brands of paint. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

Ok I think I answered my question, it's "Shade" in the case of Citadel lol

#

For Army Painter I think they call it "Quickshade"

Bases and layers are the same formulation but different names so unsuspected customers will think they are different. Contrast are a different kind, that are meant to be used on a very light primer.
What you want for wash are the Shades range.

Or, cheaper, the Army Painter Fanatic washes
