Hi

I have a lot of paints in various age, all at least 2 yrs old, up to 10. Now i've tried starting to paint again, but i'm having problems with consistency. Some are nearly airbrush liquid-y, some are thickfluid. I've tried using some airbrush medium or water on the thick paints to rather mixed effect, as it gets very liquid very fast, resulting in very poor coverage (wash/ink style on a non wash paint). Same with the paints that start too thin.

How can i get a more consistent coverage out of these? I'm assuming some of the older paints might be practically unsalvagable, but the ones from 2-4 years ago should be mostly fine, from experience?

I'm using a wet palette with mostly vallejo paints. Several i've already added ball bearings for agitation.

And no, im not using airbrush paints for a normal brush, those are in a different box.

Temperature wise i paint in a temp controlled room.

Pictures? The only reason I can think of the paints thinning out in the bottle is the pigment is settling to the bottom and the ball bearing isn't able to mix it. Have you stuck a toothpick down in there to see if there's a pack of material at the bottom?
For the too thick becoming too thin after thinning it... I guess it sounds on its face like maybe you added too much thinner. Unless I'm misunderstanding.

Possibly my wet palette diluting the paint on use too much?

Are they by any chance Vallejo Game Colours? These are notorious for having huge variations in consistency.
I had some very old Vallejo Model Colour, 20+ years old, and most of them were OK after adding a bit of water and stirring with a stick. I had only 5 out of 70 completely dried.

It is mostly vallejo, i have to check which line specifically.
