I ended up with some awful texture on this model. I'd like to keep the values and highlights minus this horrendous texture.

looks like way too much paint, did you only use oils or did you paint with acrylics beforehand?

I did an underpainting scheme with acrylics then decided to add some highlights

if the texture is only due to oils you can remove the oil paint with thinner (white spirit for example)

Yeah I decided to erase it all and start over.
