Hi, I'm pretty new to the hobby, and I'd like to try and learn edge highlighting. My minis are pretty good for now, but there are no shadows nor highlights. I tried a few times and it just looks awful. I don't rly know what brush to use furthermore, is a s sized citadel layer brush good for it ? I'd like to know how edge highlighting can be achieved. I've watched a few videos about it but the only thing they tell is : highlight the edges... Thx

Hi! It would be helpful to include photos of your minis and then we can provide better feedback
The stormcast have no highlight or drybrush. I tried to highlight the space marine's legs
It looks awful oc
are you trying to hit those edges with the tip or the side of the brush?
The side
But the brush is shitty
The tip was already split tho i never used it before
yeah trying to do fine details with a damaged brush.. is a futile endevour
It also sounds like you’re mainly using Citadel products - you can likely find just as good brushes for less money.
Generally brushes are in numbered sizes like 2, 1, 0, 00 - from largest to smallest.
The most common are 1s and 0s and a 0 will work just fine for edge highlighting.
Now you need to decide what colour to highlight in, you have a couple options:
-
Mix White into your base colour (ie White + Blue for the Soace Marine) this will create a lighter blue that is desaturated in colour.
-
Mix a colour that is “higher” up in the colour wheel to your base colour (ie Green + Blue) this will get you a brighter blue without losing saturation.
-
Use a pre-mixed lighter Blue.
Now you can apply that carefully and thinly to the edges of the panels where you want your highlights.
Don’t worry if your first 15 models don’t turn out the way you want - it’s a physical skill that you need to practice and do to get better. Just keep at it and you’ll see improvement 🙂
as soon as i cant run the edge witht he side of my brush i struggle immensly myself... then its repeate/cleanup till i´m somwhat happy
how much do u thin the paint when highlighting ?
what brush brand do u recommend then ?
DaVinci Maestro 35
Raphael 8404
Windsor & Newton Series 7
would be the usual "big 3 " lineup
Not as thinned you need control
the best i can describe it is "smooth flowing but with maximum coverage" ...
