Thread is intended to maybe organize some Stuff like Meetups or share experiences or something 🙂

I went there last year and missed @stable parrot . These are my recommendations/experiences:

• Buy Tickets on Saturday on the Day of the Convention, the Fastlane was bait and took longer than just buying a Ticket there. They don't run out. Otherwise plan to just buy a new Ticket if you need to be in a Workshop in Time. Maybe the fastlane is better this Year.
• Workshops sell out very quick as always
• Recheck your Workshop Times before the Convention. They switched around last year and it was not communicated except on the Website.
• Workshops don't have Lamps but Power and Water is provided.
• Competition Hall is only open to View for a small timeframe. Plan a bit so you can shake your head appropiatly at the inhuman level the Master Class paints at.
• Competition Hall Entry access only allowed without Backpack.

It's the friend with me who got me into miniatures. We always go to miniature conventions together. But he moved an hour away so will only go one day. I can be at the convention in 25 minutes as I am from Eindhoven.

Yeah. Wasnt always this big though. Missed a few times too due to not knowing, corona and being a mom stuff. But now he's older my husband and my son have a deal... smc is a me weekend... charging the batteries from mom stuff. So yeah since 3 years its every year and since last year both days.

It's what I am there for as well. I don't do the workshops as I won't know what day my friend will be attending untill all workshops are sold out anyway. Prefer spending time with the friend I see way to little as is to doing a workshop without him. Besides the workshops are pretty pricey so saving that money to go nuts on buying as the workshop money becomes my spend on whatever I like budget. Went nuts on basing stuff last year as well as buying my first ever 45+ euro/bigger scale figure ever (Stil need to paint it). I still am bummed I decided not to get Cormac from BlackCrow last time having bought a fair bit already.

Out of interest I looked up the where the other side of the earth is based on Sydney (because there is only like 2 cities in Australia anyways). It's a couple hundred kilometers West of Portugal so basically Europe

I think it is really up to price imo, as classes often seems to be two days for like 375 Euro and then you have to have accommodation on top of that so I feel like I might take one or two while they are not like a month worth of hobby budget to do ^_^

I think it's more a question of how much you get out of it.
But it's honestly a difficult measure imo. I had to seek outside advice on whether I'm "advanced" or not. 🤷‍♂️

I assume it also means certain skills, knowledge and experience is expected. Like knowing how to thin paints, glaze and blend. In such a quality sufficient to not hinder actually being able to see and learn the stuff being taught. Someone telling you to blend something out smoothly while explainibg how to place nmm reflections, and you cant for the life of you know how to or being able too will limit what you can get out of it. And there wont be time to teach you basics. Also think it is an enter at own risk thing. People are warned... a new painter might not be able to do this thing. Doubt anyone will be kicked out if they are. But you might feel out if place.

I enrolled in the workshops of Jean Bernard André and Radek Pituch. I don't think I'm ready yet to attend the advanced workshops, and they were sold out anyway. You'll need to stop for food and bathroom breaks anyway on a 5h drive, so the difference is probably less than you expect.

I won't take the car, I think. 900 km trek is going to leave me knackered.

I entered a fair few small competitions in the past and loved that. I prefer those anyway. And the entry fee, if any, was generally peanuts (with generally rewards and throphies to match. I gotten a few.) Also small and short ceremonies to go with that. SMC is to big and official for me with a way to long ceremonie. I will just gawk at the ungodly paintjobs instead 🙂

Liked a lot of the small competitions (not talking anything done on SMC though) Especially the you have x hours to scratchbuild from this here pile of random prue bits and junk/"speed paint this" here and now competitions. And every contestant on the same table laughing and chatting while trying to get to the good bits first (including the brushes that actually still had worthwhile tips) Oh how I miss thy.

This is my thinking too.
I don't expect medals, but I'm for sure going to try for one because, why not?
Have to start somewhere and this will be a great way to get a sense of what I need to improve. That's the main goal for me.

For me it is just that at present I am mostly into painting to get stuff done and have fun with it, be creative. Yes I will absolutely do my best often and try to learn stuff. But I am not pushing my limits and trying to break my ceilings at the moment. I have my reasons, mainly some stressors in life that need a lot of attention and focus. So I am keeping my hobby relaxed and stressfree. My perfectionistic streak that would kick in for something like SMC would stress me out.

Link is this long as i already filled in the station as start and koningshof as end. For those not Dutch/unfamiliar with the site.... You can click the "Nu" circular arrows and then "plannen" and use the link on the day itself and it works updated for that time, keeping al the settings. And the little up down arrows on the top adress to swap both for the way back. Probably duh.. miss obvious.. explanation but hey it might be helpfull.

Eindhoven is pretty nice to visit. I take it a bit for granted seeing I lived there my whole life and still do. But there is plenty to see and do.

The city center has a lot of wonderfull dinner opportunities as well of all imaginable sorts and budgets. You can walk to a lot of sightseeing and restaurants easily from the central station. You do need a train ticket or travel pass to go through the station itself though as the portals in and out are activated by scanning those. But you can also walk around the station.

You should have line 9 right in front of the hotel which takes you in 15/20 minutes straight to Eindhoven city centre then. And from there change bus to koningshof conference centre (veldhoven/eindhoven). The city centre is on the other side of the station from where your busses will be.

Update to my how to go to the city centre from the busses a bit as some find avoiding the station a bit confusing as many walk the wrong way and get stuck behind buildings blocking the way towards the centre.

So without a pass/ticket to go through the station:

Go right with the busses at your back facing the station and walk around the truckload of bikes through the tunnel underneath the train rails and voila... edge of city centre is there.

Also al fun and worthwhile walkable stuff in the city centre is that way. So no use to walk the other way. You need a car for anything worthwhile that side. Unless you want to walk 20 minutes (one long straight road from the station) to a bike/car roundabout "pit" (de berenkuil) which is filled to the brim with cool grafity). You will also see those strange wierd bowlingball pins sculpture on the way you see in eindhoven picture

In the centre? Honestly my list would be pretty big. You will be spoiled for choice.

Stratums End is a bar street but crowded by students, plenty of bars with loud music. Pretty much no seating.

I'd say the market square in the middle of the centre is best for sitting down and having a chat where you can sit for a few hours, even in many also eat something. If you walk to the primark from the station (turn right with the station in your back, non bus side. Or if you follow my around the stadion from the bus exination from above you will see primark) walk past and around. So dont follow the street with cars on primarks left but the street with shops on its right) If you follow that street you end up on the "Markt". Will take you about 10 minutes total). All 4 big ones are good: Caroussel, Wildeman, Central and de Vooruitgang. The last (furtest one) being my favorite. They have more atmosphere and room then the ones directly across the station. Those tend to be more dinner first/restaurant.

Well you really only need one on Google maps really. Carrousel is next to the MacDonalds (we have 2 so dont use the mac for google maps or you might end on the other end of the town centre). you pass mcD walking onto the market. Its on the corner. The other 3 are all neighbours and you see the first one right in front as you enter the market. Very hard to miss as they together make up one side of the marketsquare and are pretty In your face 🙂

In summer the whole marketsquare is one big terras for drinks and chilling from what I call the big 4.

There are also pure restaurants on the square.if you want to eat something else. The city center is drowning in restaurants of all sorts really. But the big four are a nice compromise for sitting chatting bar like and eating at the same spot all in one.
I like to feel not having to bugger off when I finished dinner 😉

Costs and time invested is what I might expect to be a reason not to seek out actual artists. Working for exposure is not really attractive. But yeah I agree it would be better if possible to not have AI especially if the event is all about creativity and self made stuff. They could atleast have someone savy in photoshop release that poor woman in the front of her extra arm.

Id say it’s attractive if you’re just out of school and need something on your portfolio. They could pay back in other ways: minis, tickets, etc

But yeah, I’ve got no clue what kind of work an event requires

Then again I am also sensitive to the whole work for exposure culture plaguing artists... but thats my own soapbox (and reason I do not offer my creative services anymore)

I think AI can be an incredible tool, but you really need to know the morality about it and make a judgment call after that. Gray areas and shortcuts and cost saving measures have always been around and always been morally questionable.

I think AI is useful but not generative AI, and nowhere near art. It’s an environmental disaster aside from being literal theft and an existential threat to the creative arts, reference and inspiration can be found from real things, if you start with an ai prompt you are starting from a bad place

I'm not convinced they use this unironically. The stock images before were completely over the top and these extra arms and duplicated glasses are similar to me. I don't really get why you are butthurt here. Not everything needs an artist, reaching out needs time and someone has to create it for free on short notice. This is imo completely fine. A better way imo, as the background for the text doesn't matter, is to just take photos from the last year and add text

it's almost as you're basically saying that running an event properly takes effort and a lot of work... it's only short notice cause they weren't prepared 😅 I think you give too much credit to their "creative approach", to me it just look thoughtless, like "instagram is not that important" kind of approach

I think it would be idiotic to be ironic in your social media page when you hold one of the largest figure painting competitions on this earth, that's not impossible but it would be insane. And to not catch that it might not be a good idea to post a AI generated image declaring that you have 2k+ hand painted models registered by artists is just obsurd

I honestly think not that much thought went into it and it's more a... holy crap thats a lot of entries. Thats something we should mention for hype. Quickly have vollunteers make an instagram post about it while there is still hype. And AI is fast and maybe the post seen as just a quick fun thing, more fun with illustration then without. Pictures of past events might have copyright or other issues as it shows actual people and work who might not have consented.

• You can use a debit card, phone or something with RFID what you can pay with in the supermarked without any registration to swipe it when you enter public transport and exit it. It will be charged based on the distance or time. Who knows how much and if its time based or distance but thats what everyone does it seems like.
• only for dutch residents Additionally theres a subscription to have 40% cheaper travel, cancelled monthly it seems for 6 bucks. For me thats already worth it with one trip.
  • Which is anything outside of these times 6:30-9 and 16-18:30 on a weekday.
  • Weekend the time doesn't matter and is always reduced.
