(NSFW warning)
So I got this miniature to practice skin, and I layered the paint like how the tutorial I was watching told me to (gradually adding slightly lighter colors to the raised areas), but it looks super splotchy.
Does anyone have an idea on how I can fix it? Could it be that darker skin requires a different approach?

Heya! So here's my suggestion.
- Start with your mid color. Add in a bit of lighter color to your mid color to create an in-between color.
Sorry for the bad picture but imagine you have your lowest and your highlight color ( brown and peach).
1st row . Your both separate colors
2nd row : drag your highlights color and merge it with your brown.
3rd row : repeat the paint mixing until you get to your pure highlight color.
Once you are happy and everything has dried.
Take your mid color. ( not featured) and thin it down into a very transparent tint color. So essentially if you apply it over your nail you should be able to see the nail underneath it. Once it is thin enough go over the entire surface of your skin. This will help blend the different steps together.
You can help make the steps less harsh( like the lines to be less harsh ) you can stipple dots of your colors to help trick the eye
Example of what I mean by stippling can be seen in the green piece here
Omg this is so detailed, thank you! I'll try that!
Another tip that can help you is working with less diluted paints when building layers of light, paints that contain a lot of white in their composition when more diluted tend to have a somewhat chalky finish.
What does take your mid color not featured mean?
I meant in the color gradiant picture I just showed the difference between 2 colors ( in theory brightest and darkest)
But did not show a glaze
What do you glaze with? The middle gradient or the first mix between both? (Row 2)
@inner pendant
You'd use the color you used for your mid tone. In this instance the middle of that gradient.
Sometimes you might have a 3rd color straight from a bottle as your mid tone. I didn't do that in this example. But if you did. Use that color but thin it down 😊
No worries. Looking forward to seeing it !
Im going to practice the method on a sprue
Here's an additional option for once you've tried what Dork' proposed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtcDNJFUWQk&list=PLHpI2ZuNQENlubpdn-enIYaxT_-LHgPVs
Thank you! Skin is so insanely hard, I was prewarned but did I listen?
Consider it your journey to personal painting growth 🥰
I agree. Once you accept it takes many layers and faith in them to get a result, i find it pretty fascinating.
I've seen guides on painting skin that go deep into how actual skin works, it's really cool
Feel free to share any tips/guide tutorial you find. I still need to find a way to achieve a skin I am happy with.
