the specific changes they're referring to is the measurement rules- you have to post the size of your model in MM. for standard minis you measure from foot to the highest point, for busts you measure from bottom to top, and display bases are measured from the widest part of the base (but are only awarded to scratch-made bases).

basically for the average painter you just need to measure from toe to tip (NOT across on models wider than they are tall) and measure it in mm

I finished my last semester of my bachelor's properly today with one last final. I'm giving my body a day to rest and then a day of social time, and then on thursday I'm finally picking the brush back up- in no small part because I have three models I need to paint for one of my DMs, plus a player character mini I need to paint for myself, plus one state fair entry I still need to finish.
Today I purchased my first exception. Two of my exceptions are "one STL file patreon per month" for may and june respectively. this month I went with OnePageRules. I haven't bought from them before so I'm eager to get a welcome pack, and I quite like the stuff they have on offer this month. the high elves dont appeal to me as much but i love the vampiric undead. looking forward to printing some stuff once i get through this current "must paint" log.

Working with a H&S Ultra 2024 not sure what size the stock needle it came equipped with is. Vallejo airbrush thinner with a little bit pro acryl and a little bit two thin coats

30-35 psi because 40 kept splatting.

I use a H&S Ultra 2024, it has the needle and nozzle equipped from the box. a quick Google search says "0.45mm headset"

I have an H&S Evolution and I usually use 20-26 PSI. Some colors have higher viscosity, especially the lighter ones with more white in their composition and you will need greater dilution and/or more pressure, little by little you will get the hang of it.

Takes getting used to - very different from greenstuff. What don't you like so far?

same issues with greenstuff actually its always sticky and my giant ham hands aren't great at detail work

for the sticky: use some clean water and drip your fingers/tools into the water before touching the greenstuff. It helps keep the sticky away. Ham hands, I suffer that same problem and can't help there

I prefer milliput over greenstuff - it has a longer curing time so I don't feel as doomed being slow

but, milliput tends to dry a little bit more brittle than greenstuff does, so that can be an issue for models vs. bases

I've heard good things about apoxie sculpt but not used it myself

As long as you first mix greenstuff 1:1 and the milliput 1:1 thouroughly... the amounts you mix those two mixes together all work but will have more properties of one or the other depending on the mix. Any mix on that scale has its pros and cons. I let it depend on what I am using it for. And more often then not use different mixes on the same project. Doing it like this never given me problems with curing.

Yeah, definitely mix the components separately and then combine! I tend to use more milliput when I'm doing bigger things, because I find the mixture smooths out better for me.

But I agree with Orticia, it's a lot of "experiment and find out what works"

The nice thing is I find the combo gives you more working time than greenstuff alone does

Armature. Either by using wire or other frame and/or building in layers of cured putty. Or some things wil always droop/ collaps into itself due to relative weight with uncured putty.

I'm thinking of maybe entering my first painting competition at a convention i'm going to in August, but i'm just not really sure how you go about picking a mini or the designing of a diorama or the other etcetera. Anyone have any resources or tips? Or am I just overthinking?

I think that would depend on what color your theoretical egg white is. If I remember my animal biology right the yolk turns into the creature and the white is basically amniotic fluid. But don't quote me on that I've been out of college now for as long as I was in it lol

Of course I could just be thinking too realistically here, and maybe less of a color wash and more of a slathering of satin or gloss medium to make it look "wet" and fresh hatched is the effect you want?

that's the route I would take. If it's ready to be hatched, it is going to be whatever colour the animal is (usually a little paler than expected) with a wet exterior

It's one of the reasons why I'm leaning towards dark blue for the shell and light blue for the hatchling itself. Shell is hardened, fresh scales not so much.

That and I have the appropriate metallics

Though I may test some ink with either my light purple or steel to see if I can wrangle a decent dark purple without ruining the metallic

May still do a normal wash with normal colors for the sake of picking out detail but was mostly musing about if I could skip the step if the color I'd use for the goop has a tint to it as is.

Torn up toilet paper plus plaster of paris. Mix with water and beat with stick until the desired consistency. You can use acrylics to color it as well.

The more detail you need/want the more you should tear the tp up. But for terrain you don't gotta do much. And use the cheap stuff ;p

if you have suggestions for hand supports, I am very open to them. I have a hand injury that makes mini painting harder (cramps = pain = short sessions)

I painted for about ~10 or so mins last night with just wrapping my brush in self adhesive bandage wrap and it made a bit of a difference so that I didn't have to really hold the brush, I could just have it there.

The pink parts were quite easy actually. So, the whole thing was primed white, then washed with very thin Sepia, then very thin chestnut. Then, a bit of airbrushing and dry brushing white again to make the thing look white rather than brown. After that, the pink is just a thin wash of this ink that I then used paper towel to wipe off so it was more subtle. You could achieve the same result glazing but who can be bothered?
