I didn't think of asking folks at paint night, but I'll also try their see if I can get a miliput friend to let me test it out.

Council of participants, i come on bended knee to request permission to make a purchase that is not on my exceptions list: A big ol' bulk pack of 25mm bases.
Reason for purchase
Historically I've gotten bulk packs of 1-inch wooden discs from my flgs to use as generic bases for miniatures- most of my models just get slapped on these bad boys painted all black, though they've also proven suitable for some PVA and texture fuzz/sand/etc.
Currently I am out of 1-inch wooden circles. With roughly 60 32mm-scale models in my backlog, this is an issue- though not necessarily an issue yet as detailed below.
Reasons for doubt
For one, I could technically just print more bases. I hesitate to do this primarily because I think my resin is better off being used on models.... and also because i kind of hate printing bases. they never turn out quite right.
Perhaps more significantly, though, I am not without any bases. Attached is also a photo of my current base box. The four remaining wood discs are 32mm, a bit too big for my liking but I've been using them. All of the plain black plastic ones came with nozlur's minis and I'm saving them specifically for those models. All of the printed ones on the right half of the box are for a bunch of goblins I have sitting in my pile of shame, and will be being used exclusively for that army. Everything in my current WIP (read: has paint on it) pile already has bases assigned which are not included in this photo.

I ask you two things, council:

1. Would I be correct in making this purchase, or should I exercise more restraint and force myself to paint models to use up my bases before buying more and before working on models that don't go with those bases?
2. Wood or plastic? i can get way more wood discs price-wise (300 for 10 bucks wood vs 100 for 10 bucks plastic) but i feel like plastic might be more durable? just want opinions here lol

my logic for not printing bases is that if I can purchase them for so little and in such bulk, all elements of my printing- the time and the material costs- are much better spent on printing models, not bases. fwiw i do not have friends irl in the hobby lol

My thoughts on the last two exception requests:

1. Re: sculpting a replacement part with milliput. I would start the process of trying to get a replacement from the manufacturer. Sometimes it works out. Barring that, if this person really does not have ANY sculpting stuff, learning to sculpt your own repairs is valuable skill in fighting consumerism. The devil comes when you already have something that works fine and you decide you need MORE of something else that essentially works the same, cause it's the new flavor of the month.
2. For bases, running out of something is replaceable isn't it? And bulk bases are far from doing something like buying shiny new resin sculpted bases that you don't need. I'd say if there is an immediate plan to use something and you've run out, it's just a replacement.
3. There needs to be a more formal voting process

Yeah but you don't need to learn sculpting in the next three months. It's definitely a good skill to learn, but buying brand new materials and tools is explicitly against the idea of this challenge, at least as far as I interpret it.

And the bases thing, I am also in agreement with previous folks that it doesn't count as a replacement, because the person already has a bunch of other stuff they can use. They can also use existing material, such as resin, and print their own. So it's not like they have no options and can't do any hobbying at all as a result in the next three months

Honestly, I'm getting a little frustrated with the number of "exception requests" people are posting.... The idea isn't to find loopholes, it's to work with what you have. If that means having to get creative with a limited palette or limited supplies, then that seems like a valuable learning experience to me

And tbh I think if you felt the need to participate in a no-buy-along, you probably have enough stuff to last you three months. I know I do.

So I've been soaking it overnight in iso, maybe I can try priming it again tomorrow after I leave it in the sun

I think there needs to be some kind of process moving forward to distinguish the self-flagellation from actual requests.. if such things are allowed at all in the future.

I disagree about not buying shit being easy. Buying shit is so easy. The hype train is real, there's constant FOMO both manufactured for marketing and legitimate (is this store going to close?? Is this a one time printing?). This is enforced not only by companies, but also by the community with seemingly endless videos about "This product will make you win Golden Demons!" "This Kickstarter of shit you don't need/already have is such a good deal! Revolutionary! YouTuber's name is on it!"
To me, thats the essence of QBS. Pushing back on that and being more conscious about what is needed. Too much I am seeing the solution of "Buy shit later" which.. doesn't feel in spirit to ME when it comes to stuff you need to complete an active project.
But for some things... like new GW releases or paint that you can mix easily.. I get the exercise in deprivation. I guess if you still need it in 3 mo, then you need it.

Some people are going to break the rules and not report it. others are trying to get exceptions to their exceptions to ease their conscience. Personally, i dont care to vote on everyones amendments. I like the idea of this paint along, but kudos to the Mods who have to manage it.

When you get around to sculpting, try apoxie sculpt or otherwise some other product than miliput and green stuff. I prefer tamiya epoxy to either of those 2 products though I will say I've never sculpted anything more than a piece of cloth, a broken horn, or filled in a gap. I really don't like green stuff rubberiness.

Un this case I used a procreate and milliput 50/50 mix as it makes for a sandable but still strong mix.

Fimo works too. Downside and upside at once is that you have to bake it to cure it. Where this mix cures on its own.

I wouldn't say 7$ per brush is exactly cheap but it's also not breaking the bank I guess.

Back to my one good brush and hoping it stays good with all the brush shampoo/conditioner I throw at it. :/

I don't think there are any synthetic brushes which last a long time. A hooked tip being very quick to get.

Frayed sounds like maybe a user or production issue though. Maybe you can make a thread in #1019648110085034046 or search for similar keywords to make sure is really a brush issue?

One of them was frayed like the second I took it out of the protective cap, so it's for sure a quality issue.

I'm super careful with it and maintain it as much as I can, constantly giving it a good clean before and after a session. But that one was $15 CAD by itself so I expect it to be nice.

i wouldn't take anything at face value for a store front they're doing what they need to make a profit

The thing is that this is new stock to them, and I'm a regular there, so either he doesn't care about his brushes' quality, or I got hit with bad luck on three brushes and they just have quality issues.

I always give an initial shampoo run with water from my electric kettle as I've heard very hot water works great for that.

I'll give it a more thorough run tonight I guess.

well, if you've tried it, you've tried it

hey, no matter what, you can use those for basecoating

you can use the bigger ones for basing

if you invest in an airbrush you can use them to clean the airbrush

they won't go completely to waste

That's sorta what I did, just used the 2 for large parts that didn't need detailing and then swapped to my nice brush for the more precise parts.

Don't think I can get an airbrush without first setting up my hobby corner or my wife will go nuts that I'm taking even more space on the kitchen table (that admittedly we never use)

I was gonna say you can just use an old brush you picked up from the dollar store or even drybrush texture instead.

Like I know I'm new to the hobby but I don't think that's a value add to a brush, let alone one an influencer would be inclined to slap their name on for increased price/visibility
