#Total War- Oilalong

It's one of my favor busts.
Airbrushed on a light sketch- vj ocean grey, hull red + black 50/50 in shadows, tamiya flat white highlights
Just a rough ‘cool and warm’ sketch. All the rest of this model will be done in oils
Expecting to use brown oxide, cadmium red and yellow for the hair. Armour will be a lot of paynes grey, burnt umber, naples yellow and white I think, maybe with some red secondary reflections
Just a layer of transparent brown oxide mixed 70/10/20 with linseed oil and spirits, for flow
Adding more colour to the hair
Very cool so far!
Viridian green
Some panel lining with paynes grey and leather in paynes grey + cadmium red 80/20
Will clean up after it has dried a little
C&c WELCOME
Happy with how shiny its coming out, did try and make the arm a bit more weathered though
And a little fire reflection
If I were to nitpick, I feel the top of the breasts are missing some reflections of the hair. But that's about it really!
Good shout! I had a tiny bit on one of the edges but it could use more
Thanks @stable garnet
Wow armour looks super cool! It's oils right? What brand do you use and what colours on armour?
Yes the whole thing is all just oils! I use mostly winsor and newton artist line, though my black is still winton (need to upgrade it)
The armour is, ignoring the fire bits, ivory black, paynes grey, viridian, naples yellow, titanium white
What's the difference between Winton and Artist lines? My oils are all Wintons.
Artist oils texture is a bit more buttery, they have a LOT more pigment in so you can use a lot less paint, and they have lots of ‘true’ pigments where the winton line has lots of ‘hues’ instead (mixes of pigments that try and get close to the real thing)
The artist line also thins down more nicely, less grainy
Ah, the pigment mixing is probably a reason for the lower price then.
Yeah , the type of pigment and pigment density basically. Some true pigments are very expensive, like cadmiums
Quick dirty paintover 🙂
Oooh I think maybe I mis-explained, kinda the opposite of what you're doing here. The areas I've marked in red should not be reflecting the light source, as they're pointing upwards, while the shoulder pad is pointing downwards, towards it.
LOL WTF
Well, I thought the shoulder pad was dope 😄
It was alright but dont worry the new version will also be dope
I believe in your ability to make dope things.
Doing the gold and making sure it reflects in the armour
Niice
I love it! Mindwork have excelents sculptures.
They do! Though the cast on this one was a little rough in places, needed lots of cleanup
I hope to be as good as them one day
Do you have a social network where I can follow you?
Sure since you asked I do post on insta and facebook as the_neon_brush too
They look very cool, I don’t do 3d prints though. Just be a little careful in this server as self promotion of business is against the rules 🙂
I will delete the link so as not to violate the rules
Probably a good idea! I’m sure you can share your designs and prints in the 3d printing channel on here though
Working on the back- much happier instead of red glow
Currently planning the gem but probably going with ruby
Ruby is the better pick here, there's already a lot of green on the model.
+1 for ruby, contrast the green really well and is a very pleasant accent
Thanks!
Fuck yeah you did man 😄
Had to go away and look at how gems reflect as my instinct wouldn’t have been to have the top panel near white, with red only appearing in the side opposite to the light
Yeah these gems reflect light very different from typical round one's ^^
Could work in a little Payne's grey, or cad red, depending on whether you want em warm or cool? Lotta warm light cuz of the fire, cool might be nice?
Absolutely bitchin, look forward to seeing where it goes!
The fire is no more!
Whoops! Fair enough! I also liked the fire, and still am stoked to see where you go!
Maybe try to match clothes shadowing with light sources reflected by armour? And yes imo darker shadows will be better, material has lots of deep breakdowns.
Thanks for the encouragement to make it darker, do you mean same shadow colour as the armour? (Generally dark blue grey)
Depends on the material you want to have. But from what I know about painting shadows - cold light - warm shadows. So maybe browns?
And by matching I mean direction 🙂
You are doing a great job on this one mate
Thanks man!
dang that is looking great 😄
Wasnt happy with the arm so been mocking up adjustments to it in sketchbook whilst travelling on business this week
That metal looks fantastic.
Her face is looking amazing Dan! Perfectly executed light
She’s looking fabulous
Stunning colour work on the face. Is there something you do differently for skin to make it look like a less glossy finish than in other places?
Or am I just being dumb and the glossy look is actually painted highlights?
It’s just the finish of the oils, dependent on how much linseed oil i added to the mix
More oil means more gloss
I’ll even it all out in the end
How long does the linseed oil take to dry/cure?
Sorry for gunking up your thread with questions 😄
Also, why do you prefer linseed oil over mineral spirits?
Day or so to dry, maybe a little more if it’s thick, and to fully cure it’s hard to say- maybe a week or more. You don’t need it to dry or cure necessarily before continuing to paint
Linseed oil is doing a totally different job
Like acrylic medium vs airbrush thinner
👌❤️
Made the tear less dark and makeupy as I didn’t wanna give the impression she went into battle with no -waterproof makeup
Man, i must admit, you reached next level with this one. Excellent job 👌
Thanks dude, yeah I honestly feel very proud of this and if it isn’t too vain to say, it feels like I’ve levelled up a bit on this model. I just started painting busts in january moving from warhammer and the new techniques are starting to sink in. I think this discord has been really helpful for advice and feedback to improve too.
I think the move to painting all in oils has also helped. They just seem to behave for me better than acrylics ever did. I am in awe of anyone able to do amazing things with acrylics though as they are tricky.
Have similar experiences. A bigger scale opened my eyes to some more artistic approach 🙂
Ps: once again, you should be proud, great job 🙂
More small tweaks. Running out of bits to change but the hair, leather and hands still need work
Love it dude. Daaaaang
Imo armour on her forearm needs to be lighter, now it's looking a little incoherent with the rest.
But it’s facing downwards no?
Maybe it's a photo, for me the upper part has a similar angle to the hips armour which is lighter 🙂
It is facing down yeah- with lots of it more level with the horizon rather than the sky
Varnished the hair to take the sheen off and will go back with more burnt umber and ochre for shadows and highlights and give it a satin finish
oooh, that changes everything on the pictures, for the better! 👍
That's a lot of character in the piece. The tear pushes the mood to the top. Absolutely Great
Did you use iridescents or Metallics for the tear?
I recently found an article where Gamblin talks about the uses for their metallic line.
Stunning dude. Outrageous.
No, I am a bit stubborn when it comes to finish- i like everything to be matte generally or a matt satin
So i dont like to use anything shiny, glossy or metallic in the finished look
The shine in the tear is just an illusion from white paint
Too kind man, thanks
Still painting as I’m still not happy with the hair
Imo base is good, you only should work on details. Her hair looks difficult because of the mess. In theory each curve should have some sort of reflection...
And some inspiration for you 🙂 https://www.instagram.com/p/C2xJEB9Irxv/?igsh=eWVmcWpzYWZvcmI0
Hello, my friends. It took some time but I finished my last bust. This is the Total War bust made by Mindwork Studio that I started during a class at the end of 2023. This is a personal project so I wanted to practice more Non Metalic Metal so it was a perfect occasion to do it by finishing this bust. I experimented with some ideas more like a m...

Not nearly as cool as the total war bust but I had allot of fun with my lil mimic. 🙂 quick and fun!
That tongue is outrageously good
You're too kind fella! I am super happy about it though! One of those happy accidents.:D
@woeful aurora I assume that instagram link posted above is from someone who’s well known in the painter circles but yours is better to my eyes fwiw. Challenge him to a duel.
Definitely better known yeah he’s great! I have no followers lol
Agreed
Lovely 👌😮💨
Same!
