Hello, been finally getting around to getting my army ready, I went with a black, gold, purple scheme for a royal dynasty aesthetic, and while shade paints have done wonders for the black and gold, the purple is currently the most dull part and I want to make it pop more. I'm currently base coating with Phoenician purple from citadel, and I've tried trimming with drukhari lilac, but found it's so bright it's distracting and doesn't blend well as it looks too close to white because of the shade difference. I've mainly been looking at vallejo 735 and 945, but even then I haven't messed with blending colors and getting a nice energy effect like the box art so if anyone has suggestions for paints/combinations or how to apply it to get a nice effect it would be much appreciated

Can you post a reference for the sort of "energy effect" you're wanting to receive?

My initial instinct would be to highlight towards a cold violet, just because when you say "energy" I think blue.

More towards magenta would definitely also be an option like the fluo you suggest, but note that fluo on its own is quite weak, so you'd likely want a regular magenta as well to help get you there.
And the Model Color fluos really aren't very good, so if it's a route you're looking to take have a look at the fluos from Game Color in stead.

This is what I'm aiming for with my colors

Pink is more eye catching and good for energy and highlight points than light purple as it's incredibly subtle

Nah, sorry I don't have any paints in that specific shade, but if you're okay with an approximation there's Warlord Purple from Vallejo which despite its name is a quite magenta tone. Then something like Squid Pink for the brightest highlights.

But honestly, you have a ton of options. My go to is always the swatch library from #tutorials-database which you can find here:

I mean like contrast and layer paints suck imo, they're really thin and watery, I like thicker paints generally as if you want to thin them you can, but sometimes thicker paint is better for the job when you don't wanna go over the same area 2-3 times

Most of the Game Color Range is pretty opaque. Just make sure you stick with the new versions with black cap as the old grey ones really aren't very good.

#

I wouldn't call Vallejo thick though, it's a fairly average acrylic paint. I find AK a little thinner but then again they're quite opaque generally.
You should try branching out from the GW paints just to get a feel for how other brands behave.

#

Vallejo is average in viscosity, I mean. They're regarded as very good paints. Same goes for AK.

Citadel is the only option carried locally n most people have and know the best, they just lack brighter colors tbh

#

The black, purple, n gold I've used have all worked fine, the technical paint doesn't seem to work but I'll probably just stick with the color for bases n maybe add sand later

I got Armageddon dunes and no matter how thick I layer it on it just looks like crumbs and a basic sand color

But luckily there's no shortage of other options for texture paste. Again Vallejo and AK are popular choices with different grit levels, colors etc.

#

The cost is radically different with other brands when it comes to texture paste.

Put more on. Slather it on there with a spatula.
