Paint a model using the 4 colored palette of yellow ochre, vermillion, black and white. Note if you dont have the exact color. Closest ones are welcome as substitute. :

STANDARD HOUSEKEEPING RULES :

You may prep your mini, this includes, gap fill, assemble, purchase and prime ahead of time. Paint should only be applied during the time-frame of the PAL.

Anyone can join in on the fun. Just share your mini first and paint within the time frame. Request your points in the point request channel by following the pinned post on how to ask for points.

You can't submit the same mini for multiple PALs or other multiple events. And units minis can't be split among the different PALS if they are identical .

Have fun and be nice to each other. Share some wips and some laughs.

Are the colours restricted for this PAL? I've also seen examples where they include a dark blue instead of black for example. Making greens would be a bit easier that way.

Also I think the idea is not to copy the true chroma of the source. Relative to the rest of the model you can still get the warm and cool contrasts

#

Can I do YMC+BW then? ๐Ÿ˜› (just kidding)

#

I got you. I'll stop fuzzing over it.

#

I'll participate with this guy

past sand
#

I'm going back on the "i'll stop fuzzing" bit. Because I did some mixing right now and remembered why I got pure liquitex inks once: If you mix Vallejos "Flat Red" with "Golden Yellow", if they were pure red and yellow pigments, you would get orange. But you don't. It becomes a pastel pink, or a pastel-brownish-orange, but you never reach a true orange.

#

@dire shuttle Would it count if I use a 3:1 mix of yellow medium azo and quinacridone magenta to replace the vermillion? I would pre-mix it (resulting in a rich red ink) and would not use yellow/magenta separately.

Nevermind. I ordered this...
https://www.pk-pro.de/Liquitex-Professional-Acrylic-Ink-30ml-BTL-NAPHTHOL-RED-LIGHT

So it will be either left picture if rules allow, or otherwise right (with flat red).

I don't have ochre... it is raw siena.

#

I have an orange ochre.... may test its mixingness ๐Ÿ™‚

#

Hm, actually I wouldn't expect green from a pure black and pure yellow. It would only happen if there's a blue-ish component in the black...

obtuse drum
#

Nope you don't need any blue it works with black but you won't get a bright green

#

This is pretty accurate

past sand
#

Yes, you are right. Double-checked with the Golden Acrylic Mixer.

#

However.... it does not work with yellow ochre or raw siena. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

So no greens for us, unless the substitute for ochre is yellow.

dire harness
scenic cedar
#

Letโ€™s see how this goes ๐Ÿ˜…

sleek solar
#

The thing to remember is that the greens and blues in this palette are largely contextual. The yellow ochre and black will make a greenish colour, that for this palette works as green.
Black and white make a neutral grey which, in this very warm palette, will read as blueish.

#

You won't be getting vibrant greens and blues and that's largely the point of the exercise.

past sand
#

So this is my test subject. I know the PAL has not started and I'll not get any points. Actually I just wanted to try if the palette worked and it kind of escalated >.<

I swear the greenish pelts do not read as green to me in the actual miniature size. It happens when doing the 2x optical zoom.

I'll be good now until February!

median isle
#

hmm, an interesting paintalong theme pepethink

#

the videos for minipainting about zorn always inclue the blue which is a bit annoying kek

past sand
#

I really struggle with mixing non-ink paints this time of year. We have around and below 30% air humidity, and the colors dry right on the wet palette (it is an everlasting, and it holds as much water as it can). So I have to constantly mix the same color again and again to get different shades of it, and then I get lazy and try to shortcut it by using almost-dried-blotches of colors which is annoying.
Inks hold up decently well, but I need so many coats again I get impatient and try to apply too much and it runs into the recesses, more tidy up work. Plus, my tiny brushes constatly dry out or even split if I do not wet them again fast enough (they are good sable brushes...).
I had none of these problems in summer ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

End of complaint, thanks for listening, just wanted to share my frustration. Yes we have multiple humidifiers.

dire shuttle

# dire shuttle You can still get points for the model itself but not the PAL bonus ๐Ÿ˜Š just an F...

Thanks. Yes, I requested normal points for it.

I went over it with another zorn palette using an orange ochre and flat red instead to see the difference, and because I had been sloppy with the inks and didn't mind it running around at first, because I wanted to see the colors first and foremost. It is not as tidy as I would have liked, even after that. Really struggling with my tiny brushes.

#

I'm really torn what to do for this PAL: Inks or normal Vallejo model paints?

The inks are easier / more predictable to mix, simpler to wet-blend, and more vibrant over a light undercoat.
The normal paints are more difficult to mix, and no chance for wet-blending without retarder, and they are more subdued, but I can apply them more precisely with good opaqueness. I want to learn to go without wet-blending, but I want that specific model to look great.
Option 3 would be to go for the palette that I struggle with more, and use a different model where it does not matter...

sleek solar
#

I would recommend using both options because then you get a larger range of skills and techniques to play with

#

But failing that, use the option you're more familiar with. This sort of exercise is more one of colour theory than technique.

jagged stratus
#

Questionnnn - if we are doing a unit for this, do we need to have all colours on every mini? I have some guys who are greyscale except for red and could utilise yellow for some commander markings

#

Or is the idea to utilise all cohesively

dire shuttle
# jagged stratus Questionnnn - if we are doing a unit for this, do we need to have all colours on...

Well the purpose of the Zorn palette is to mix colors to form a wider variety of colors than the 5 base coats.
If you are more looking into just doing something like "sin city" movie where it's all black and white and then here's a solid red or yellow bit it might not quite hit the mark.

If you are adding in like variety and shades of the colors it would work. Alternatively if you added even a bit of yellow to the greyscale you might get some interesting results.

TLDR if you are essentially doing zenithal and a pop of color that represents less than 25% of the figure then I'd say no

For this PAL, I am using Raw Sienna for the ochre, and I am able to get a decent leather with it. As I understand it, the "real" brown pigments have some properties that are pretty unique.

See how the focus "pops" at certain distances? That's the camera switching to the wide angle lens.
Keep it far enough away that it doesn't do that (the main lens has a much higher resolution).
Use bright, cold light directly on the mini. As close to the camera angle as possible.
Focus on the mini and optionally use the 2x zoom (which is essentially just a crop).
Manually lower the brightness a tad. With a dark background you might want to lower it quite a bit, as the phone will try to expose for that.

I don't think I'm really in a place to criticise. I'm a big fan of your painting style actually. Always very clean and detailed but still smooth. I voted for you in the duel with Gnillab ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm not a big fan of desaturated red (as you might have guessed from my contribution), but that's mostly a matter of taste. The only thing I would improve is the yellow thing on the emblem. That could have more detail. Not sure what it is actually, could be an eye? And maybe the skull could be even less saturated to differentiate it more from the skin.

Nice color (\edit: I mean the golden-ish borders that look so shiny). Ochre is a pretty good basis for NMM gold I heard, so that mini fits the Zorn palette well. past sand
# carmine pelican I thought it was a royal pain to use the palette if Iโ€™m honest ๐Ÿคฃ all these mini...

What makes it tedious for me is that I tend to mix not enough of a certain color, or it dries after a few minutes, so I don't have to mix the same color again, and this time I have to fit the previous color.
So if I dawdled around with more than two until I get what I need by eyeballing it, I tend to not get the exact color again that I had before. Especially nasty for transitions.
And if the color I need has already dried on the miniature, I can't match it, but I need something lighter, to match the tone after drying... Purple and blue are notorious for this.

#

So then I feel that I must somehow improve the logistics on my palette, because after half a session it is full with stuff I mixed without any visible system... When you watch videos of artists, their palettes always look pretty systematic.

hybrid rune
# deep marsh and the like 5 dots of blue? its an xwing and r2d2 couldn`t miss

I don't know if @dire shuttle misunderstood or if maybe I did, but usually you can't begin a PAL with a half painted mini and when it's limited palette you can't use colors from outside of that palette. That's sort of the whole idea behind this exercise, to push yourself to solve the puzzle of "how do I paint these blue bits without any blue?". ๐Ÿ™‚

dire harness
#

I think youโ€™d just use black and white to paint r2d2 โ€˜blueโ€™

hybrid rune
dire shuttle
#

Alright let's try this again. @deep marsh @hybrid rune .

This Paint along is for a limited palette only. So red yellow black white .
No blue.
You can mix a color to resemble blue

#

The fact you had 5 dots of blue meant you'd be painting it over

#

If you are not painting over the blue. Please pick a different model or participate in a different paint along.

#

It is not in the spirit of PALs to start a model and participate, but considering this person was 1- new and 2- using a color that isn't part of the Zorn palette and needs to be painted over. There was no harm in allowing them to join.

If you have a problem or do not understand my logic here. Please let me know.

#

Are you basing in one color and then layering with glazes until it turns a different color? Or are you mixing paints on a pallet and then painting straight on?

It is highly dependent on the black you use. Some pigments are cooler than others

And without knowing what pigment is in your paint it's hard to tell
