Hi all

Just joined and I could use some help 😊

I've started up this ogre and I've read that ogre skin colour ranges from dull yellow to dull brown (in D&D). Probably going to my local miniature store tomorrow, so I would like to hear your suggestions for a base colour in this colour range (and maybe highlights too)?

Thanks 🙏

It would be helpful to know what brands of paint your local store carries and responses can be tailored to those ranges.

Bugbear’s glow and then highlight with a lighter flesh tone. The bugbear’s glow will make for a ruddy look in folds of skin but it can be pretty vibrant so if you don’t want a stretch mark look, I recommend using the flesh tone highlight generously. Use a sepia wash

#

I painted an ogre a bit ago and had to make some repairs/adjustments—my recommendations are based on what I read/have planned for round 2

#

Bugman’s Glow I think it may be called actually

I haven't used any of those in a bit, but I remember liking Citadel Bugman's Glow or whatever it's called. It gets a bit weird when highlighted with white so use a flesh color, ivory, or yellow to mix in.

#

The Vallejo Panzer Aces line has much better yellow browns, but usually only armor model kit shops have that range

Glazing or layering from bugman’s glow > cardian flesh tone > rakarth flesh highlights. Again, really commit to the shadows and folds to make the flesh look bulbous and fatty rather than just blotchy and pale

#

More yellow/chlorine glaze/wash if you want a jaundiced or sickly look

Unfortunately our resident swatcher doesn't have Citadel or new VGC

I did not make that, it's all Antinea

#

But it needs linked everywhere

#

I myself use Pro Acryl and maybe I should put in as much effort as ultra-Chad Antinea 😅

I’m just starting to make the switch to Pro Acryl. The citadel pots and their white clumsiness finally broke my spirit. Found a shop nearby that sells other brands and actually a bit cheaper. How have you liked them?

# coral sail Of course. The general stuff: Citadel, AK, Vallejo, Army Painter.

Looking at the molding, with the skulls on that rope across his chest, you can probably use a redder tone (sunburnt?) so that the pale flesh and the skulls don’t mesh too much. I think it makes sense to have his face and those skulls be two major focus areas on the mini (big pop) and his fist and club be the others.

I am actually phasing over to Golden SoFlats and I bottle my own mixes

Thanks for your answers! God idea with making the skulls pop.

I think I'll go with Bugman's Glow and then highlight/drybrush with Cadian Fleshtone and Rakarth Flesh. For the skulls, I'll paint with Zandri Dust, wash with Agrax Earthshade and then drybrush with Zandri Dust again. And then highlight with Ushabti Bone and Screaming Skull.

All good! This group is super supportive so glad you’re here (you mentioned you just joined).

Not to complicate it, but an alternative if you wanna go light on his skin is to go black or ash with the skulls and then highlight for the daylight—maybe the skulls were burned or painted or something—can give some contrast if you’re struggling to make them pop

Can’t wait to see the final product!

Ogre skin color you say?

#

This is the route I'd take.
Bugmans Glow is too healthy and human looking, imo.
Needs to be more greenish and desaturated.

#

Something like these paints, but mix in more reddish tones around the nose, knuckles and such.

If he didn't specify D&D I would agree, but the guy was very specific

I'm pretty sure I basecoated this mini with Vallejo Model Color, German Yellow (70.806), then I mixed that with Light Yellow (70.949) and used Army Painter Heavy Wash for the recessed shading.

Slowly progressing.
