#Bustalong - Dec - Jan

I mean, yeah, it boosts other colors too
if you install the lightroom app and take shots in RAW there and compare them, they're going to be a lot different
Yup for sure
I'm going to paint my bust 🤞
I don't have the sources any more, long ancient knowledge but from memory, the default camera apps aim to produce the best photos of people. So it boosts saturation, the white balance leans towards yellow, and they automatically sharpen as well as a bunch of other stuff. It's why the best pics of minis have a bunch of post processing.
They're all settings you can change in the settings or a more advanced camera app, but it's there by default.
Also, Samsung uses AI to enhance pictures of the Moon by default
Sorry, should say "produce the best photos of white people"
Yeah Thats all cool, I was just taken aback by the red boosting bit mostly because I’d never heard of it. To be clear i wasn’t really saying you’re wrong I just wanted to learn more
To be fair, it may not be that they're specifically boosting red more, but it's more noticeable on the last decade of Pixel phones. All the companies have their own special settings though.
So, TIL that if I want to paint over oil shadows with acrylic, if I mess up and have my brush too loaded and I try to wipe off the acrylic with a wet brush, it wipes up a lot of the oil too.
Even 3 days later.
Oil curing times can be a pain in the arse
Buzz, you’re straight up not having a good time with that model mate. Feel for you.
Software in cameras is inherently not very good at understanding painted on light and shadow. Remember, you've effectively created an optical illusion.
Camera talk aside, I still really like this piece, it looks wild in the best way.
did you varnish over the oils?
Meh, it's a learning experience. I wasn't expecting it to be easy. 🙂 But I appreciate the thought 🙂
I did not. I read to varnish over the acrylic base, but I suppose varnishing over the oils next time is important too.
I thought it would be plenty dry after 3 days.
Yeah I thought it should be too, but sometimes I get surprised. I run into another issue when I don't varnish - the oils are super hydrophobic so acrylic paints don'T stick
hahahaha
White highlight on the fleshy bit in the corner of the eye, one micron thin. I quit honestly 🤣 so good
worked on fabric, fur, leather and metal tonight
Awesome, I hereby announce my intention to copy
good luck! they're super fun but have their share of frustrations
ok, I think I'm on to something. I've got a mostly fair complexion now with a hint of rose, instead of way too red.
stupid hair got embedded in her cheek though.
actually, the rosey hue doesn't seem to show up in the camera
Testing, under balanced light temperature.
Ok, don't really see a difference.
thanks man, gotta adjust it a bit
looking forward to your take on a similar lighting situation!
im surprised the color of the iris can actually be seen in the photos
yeah this is usually a problem with photos hahaha
have you tried saturating the surface with water and using a soft brush to dislodge it?
Not yet. Every time I do that I end up taking off a lot more than I intend.
Looks great, is that acrylic and oil?
The eyes and the text are acrylic, the rest is oil
I'm thinking this one is approaching done soon. I feel like its probably as good as I can get it right now besides maybe some more smoothing things out.
Yea, holy Jesus that's intense
What a gorgeous skin tone. Absolutely stunning
I need to start focusing on humans and their skin tones. I do so much alien stuff it's easy for it to be funky and be considered ok
progressing by inches now it feels like
another hour or 2 and not much to show for it
Alright I'm ready to get this going
Let's Goooo!
I think I'm nearly done! Just need to hit varnish and transfer to a non-wonky plinth
Looks awesome
Making some progress. How’s the armor looking?
Not super happy with progress so far. Wings need a lot of work - supposed to be fire below her and heavenly light above but the fire lighting looks like mud lol
The base coat of the cold steel looks great and can see the light placement is gonna be good once you glaze some more contrast in. I agree right now the fire is in the ‘awkward teen’ stage that a lot of osl goes though, I’d tweak the values but I can’t see the overall effect yet as it just seems to be on one wing
Calling it done. Subtle purple shadow gives it the depth I was looking for
It was either make him look alive or make him look like a puppet lol
How haven't you painted that baby yet?! I'm jonesing for its cuteness 🤣
I actually did a bit
about to work on it more rn
Yay
I need a model that is just a bunch of cute weird babies
40k Cherubs 😉
Are they freakish enough? 🤣
What are 40k cherubs
Omg yes
Sounds like you did a google and found what you were looking for
I will accept donations of baby cherubs only
No creepy old men in suits
very nice! very regurd 😄
Well, so much for taking part in this... My bust is on its way back to Spain... Cus the guy didn't try to buzz at the door.
lol thanks. I can't be bothered to take two photos, so the #advent-2023 is going to have to do 😉
ugh sucks. Have had that happen before.
I'm probably just gonna get my money back if they'e gonna ask me to pay for shipping again... It wasn't cheap
I hate living in an apartment building, I swear more often than not they don't even bother
They just send it straight back after a single failed delivery attempt? That's crazy!
You sure about that?
Let me correct myself no creepy old men in space suits
Idk what happened, maybe I forgot the unit number but in that case they just leave a slip saying they missed me, and I go pick it up
Yeah, usually it's returned to a pick up location. Can't expect everyone to be home all the time.
Sucks either way. ☹️
Just imagining someone dragging it for days and days from spain, ringing the door bell waiting 3 seconds then saying ‘welp, back to spain i go then’
‘Hmm thats weird, someone ordered this to an empty house’
With how long it took to get here, I'd be lucky to get it back by mid January
I really don't wanna pay for the shipping again either. I'm just gonna cut my losses I guess
I was so hoping to take part, but the only other un-started bust I have is the Spira Kappa one
And I just don't think I want to paint it
honestly non-holiday time they may take more time to figure it out, but it seems like they're all just slammed during december
Aw that sucks with the package being sent back D:
Well I think it's just policy that if there isn't a full proper address, it's auto returned. But it seems because they knew my building, but not my specific unit, they weren't able to just leave a slip being like.
Go pick it up
They always require ID for that
Anyway, maybe I'll just take part in spirit and finish up a bust I never completed
could always just cut the bottom 2/3rds off another figure and call it a bust 😉
Now we're thinking lol
I do have a decent backlog of larger display figures, just no busts I haven't started that I want to work on.
Made a bit of progress on some refinements, still have to address the hair and glowy metal bits tho..
Pah wrong photo
I don't really know what I'm doing so I'll just keep glazing until it looks good
Haha that's usually the way faces go for me too at that scale
But that's the fun of it
It's low stress because it takes so long, and you can easily course correct if you don't like the direction it's going
Yeah, it's cool to kinda see it taking form slowly tho
A few glazes ago she really looked like a clown lol
Heh I've redone the right side if my face 5 times now....
And. Yeah. I have that embedded brush hair thatbi need to rub out. But I now have a decent handle on skin tones. Pale sand, salmon, light flesh and dark rust for warm tones. I still need to figure out how to get the right colors in the shade though or I'll give up on massive value difference and go with a more ambient style
Alright, I'm done for tonight
Kinda reminds me of like a white walker if they had a kind soul. Such a fun face
I'm gonna call this puppy done
Nice work, looks great
super cool - great job!
thank you!!
Beautiful. Love your palette and the atmosphere it brings.
Given that i have no idea what I'm doing on this one, I do think this is starting to look quite nice if I may say so myself. Still have to do the eyebrows, and fix his ears again but hey, progress!
Looks really cool
getting closer
I'll be away one week for the holidays so that's all I can do for now
Kinda struggling with the blue waistcoat, the highlights don't feel right
Thank you 😁
how many time I said "I'll start paint today"
damn i have to start today no matter what haha
Do it, start it now
I'll 🫡
Just for you @rain needle
Precious bb
Ok so this is where I would normally leave it, but I’m pretty bad at the last bits of projects and I feel like it could use plenty of work. Would love thoughts on what to do to improve this
It's looking good, I like the green/blue colour on the wings.
I think you need to re-assess your orange glow, and your shadows.
I believe your intention was orange from the bottom, blue-white from the top?
The underglow isn't applying in a consistent manner. For example, on the wing on her right, the whole inside part of the wing is caught in the glow, suggesting that the fire is to her front and left, but that should give glow on the front of her left wing as well. In the same manner, you have the glow showing on the rear of her left wing, in which case, that glow would not show up in her front.
With the glow on her right wing, you'd see the glow on the armour as well, reflected from the wing to the metal. (The metal looks great, it's just not reflecting the glow you've created.)
Good job on the shirt pattern. Really impressed with how evenly sized you managed to make the shapes.
Agreed on all points - yeah I am honestly not a fan and may just try to remove it altogether but that also sounds difficult lol. May just make it way de-emphasized
Disagree, work it more, to make it better! The contrasting glows will be really impactful.
Haha ok! lol
Something you can do is shine a light on the mini, this will show exactly where the light will land.
I second all this advice and would add, I think the values of the reflection on the wing of the orange light need adjusting too, I’m having a hard time imagining what kind of light could make the entire wing look like that with the rest of the model untouched. After adding orange reflections to the face and armour I’d get the top of the wing much darker
Kick-off
that's going to be super fun!
lol. finger-crossed
that'd be my recommendation. for the glow to hit there, it would also need to hit on all parallel/similar faces and would totally change the look of your armor. i think you could get rid of the intense orange glow and just go for a more ambient orange. Like if the floor - and not a fireplace - was orange and reflecting the light from above.
That being said, I really really like your NMM. I think reducing the orange could bring a lot of focus and consistency to your metals which are the star of the show
PUT PAINT ON IT YOU COWARD
That looks amazing. Can I ask where you got it?
From the interwebs
That makes everything much clearer. Thanks
It's from Life miniatures
🫡 Yes sir ... (closing pron hub)
Thanks
looking very good! i belive that face should have more value and definition, now eyes are sharp and nice but face is kinda shapeless. To my mind more pronounced highlights will shift focal point from should to face a bit more
also it looks like you forgot to paint middle section of sword pommel to gold
Building up the skin tone, however found some mold lines, have to clean that up before continuous.
That was quick
OMG, already looking great, would you mind sharing tour first steps for the skin? Love all those blueish tones.
Man now I wanna go home and paint
sure, I used orange brown (AV 70981) + blue (AV 70899) for the base / shade color. the colors aren't specified, i just pick the mid-brown & whatever blue to begin with. then use normal flesh colors to build up the skin tone - currently I'm using beige red (AK11064), and assumed sunny skin tone (AK11055) or radiant flesh (AK11053) as the highlight color.
one of improvements I needed on my list lol
the blus-ish won't last long, I'll make it look more subtle later.
Thanks a lot! So, if I understand correctly, you start by sketching the skin with orange-brown, and its shadow with blue. Then you build up some beige red (glazing? layering?). And finally the Highlights are added via progressive layering/glazing, right?
I really need to improve my skins
Do you ever 'selective shade' with some kind of red-brown? Or will you leave your shadows with skintones over blue?
There's this cool part of Arnau's book where he just "randomly" splatters magenta and green as a base for skin. Then when he gradually builds up skin tone over them it creates complexity and a visual interest.
Really cool stuff.
I want a mostly naked model now to try that on.
the blue + red brown (shade color) paint on the recesses area , than beige red used to blend between shade color & lighter flesh color. The transition is --- shade color > shade color + beige red > beige red > beige red + flesh color > flesh color.
yes this is my intention to leave some blue on the skin tone. this look more dramatic. I use red-brown as of the transition color from blue to flesh.
Thanks, now time to test all these but I don't have many female skin minis at the moment...Anyway, looking forward to seeing your updates on this one!
time to buy more lol
Thanks for the recommendation will check him out. I wanna make 2024 the year of nailing skin tones.
I really like his approach, I've tried it recently a bit to some real success!
I like Jaume Ortiz. Fits my style and he teaches in a really clear way.
I found Milan Dufek had a good tutorial that made sense to me for bust skin painting
Looks great.
THat's a whole lotta arm that was meticulously painted before covering it with a shield
Made alot of progress today something feels off though
Older version for reference. I needed a better plan going in next time.
also not at yalls level
Not entirely sure I’ll be able to finish by Jan but i at least started
Hey now. We run our own race here. This time last year I wasn't at my current level, and this time next year you'll have leveled up too.
and btw, she looks better than my first bust, imo
My busts are in Milan now 😄 They move closer and closer to me ❤️
It ends at the end of january, so no rush 😉
If you think everybody else in here didn't start off with stuff looking horrible, you're dead wrong my friend. It's just a matter of time and effort.
I got an arrived in milan email today too!!
think i just need to figure out what to put on the shield now
Freehand ‘I need a raise’
🙂 looks amazing dude. Really cool
Or ‘will fight for $’
I dunno, I feel like ATM it's rather serious in tone and something like that will totally change the vibe
Do a boar, it's the best idea so far
Boar, it's his heraldry
True
Yeh fair fair
Still a whole month left - can always break and come back 😉
Nah I got too much other shit to do lol
Excellent work Nan!
That looks amazing dude
thanks yall
Love it!
Beautiful work @vapid kettle i love the scallop pattern and the hand is amazing too
ty ty!
You just did stippling for the beard and eyebrows?
Very believable model
Kinda, just very short strokes
Nice. Love the skin too.
Thanks!
Does the kappa even have water in its head bowl?
Koo koo.
ka chew
If I were painting a model like that and I wanted water in its head bowl, what woiluld be best you think. Some uhu and blue ink?
I would just use like vallejo still water or similar
Ohh. Nice. I might need to get some of that
@vapid kettle I was just sitting in my sofa while checking your post and I noticed something.
nice haha
After some clean up to lines and what not, studying light for this!
My girlfriend got me some brushes as some early Christmas gifts, so I can paint this 🙂
Porco Rosso?
Nice
Hopefully I’ll make it in time 😅
Ooh is that who I think it is?
Nah nvm, not nearly enough braids haha
I thought it was meant to be Gotrek
He's got that slayer mohawk
Not him but also I have no clue who it is
Had some good hobby time over the holidays. Only using 4 paints for a zorn palette. Very difficult, I’m finding
It is hard to get hue contrast but I think you’re doing a great job. The pro is you don’t have to worry about making a mess with too many different colors!
This is a super cool bust
Believable bronze
Zorn palette is one I want to try at some point, just lack the colors atm it's looking good @plush ember
I wanna try it on my army of the damned bust, this guy is basically olive green right?
Update. Busted out the big antique camera, since I needed some pictures that properly shows the colour and the phone refuses to play along.
Refined the light on the skin to a place I’m finally starting to feel happy with. Changed the hue and saturation quite a bit and introduced some more colours. Only blending left on the skin at this point, I think.
Definitely some blues in the right model
Those eyes 😱🤯
Thanks, I think. 😊
It's really fun to do eyes at this scale, when there's so much realestate to work with.
To me it looks like a lot of mid tones with low saturation mixed from an orange-brown and blue-green. There’s a lot of variation when you get up close
The shadows are a cool brown, then it goes from orange to green to blue (all very desaturated) then a white reflection
Def not Zorn tho 😜
This is how I imagine your camera looks
That might very well be the exact camera house I have. 😂
I’m super jealous of your photography skills. It always looks so clean.
You have a house for your camera!? And here I though the Norwegians were rich
Thanks. Helps that I have a decent setup from when I used to shoot weddings. Though my kit is much more suited for portraits than minis.
All of my stuff is at least 15 years old, btw, so don't ever let anyone tell you the latest tech is needed for decent photos.
Nah a photo is a photo lol
That reminds me. I bought this fancy dslr camera that is gathering dust in my closet
That's what they do best.
lol
I was totally going to make videos and it just never happens
I need to pick your brain about a good fixed length for my Sony @summer meadow
Need to use it.
Rather than shooting on my nifty 50
I thought you knew I know next to nothing about camera stuff released the last decade. 😂
I think I spent 5-600 on the Sony a-something model
Ahh. Welp, I thought it was dslr....showes what I know
But it looked like one camera to rule them all
They're good mid-range bodies
What don't you like about the 50mm?
Oh yeah, for sure. "Nifty fifty" usually refers to fixed 50mm.
On a cropped sensor like yours, it's my absolute favorite lens.
Oh I had heard it used for the 15-50 so probably just misused it 😂
50mm fixed on your camera will be equivalent to 70-80mm which is incredibly versatile.
Ah because of the APS-C?
My personal favorite focal length.
Yes. Small sensor = cropped image.
Very cool, I'll shop around!
What you want to make sure of is the focus distance.
Since you want to get close to your subject. That's not usually a requirement for a 50mm.
Would that be a fixed aperture on the 50mm?
Fixed aperture is a term for a lens with variable focal range, like your 15-50mm, but SAME aperture across the range.
50mm is fixed focal length.
Ah okay
I'm like whoosh
Ah yeah like this prime lens has a minimum focal of 17.8"
So I'd have to be pretty far back 😂
Just camera gear terms. Specifically lens terms
But I'm hearing I might need another lens for closeups
Depends on what you have and what you want to accomplish
Not need, per se
Since that was not my intention when I bought the camera, it doesn't surprise me
Now I might want to do some mini closeups
Mine isn't made for close ups at all. I crop my photos quite a lot.
Even my phone lens gets blurry when I get real close
Actually if you wanna take pictures of small things, another option besides getting really close, is the opposite. A large focal length and a tripod will get you real close to stuff too
Just had a look and that's the same as mine. Not ideal for minis. I would try before I buy in your case.
I will look for something with a shorter focal length instead hahah
Makes sense, not intuitive though. I wanna caress my mini with the camera lens
Oops, I knocked it over again
Focus distance.
Focal length is the 50mm or "zoom" of the camera.
But in January when I go home, I'll break out my camera and make use of it
That is usually what comes to mind yeah. But that creates other issues, more specifically with light and distortion.
Getting too close means you and your camera might actually block the light, and if you're close you need a wider angle (smaller focal length) and the wider the angle, the more distorted the image gets. Like fisheye lenses have really short focal lengths, but then the picture looks like bubbles
So to get a really crisp, flat image you actually need some distance. Or tons of light and really expensive lenses but I'm just going to assume most people won't go that route
Ohhhh. Good points. So probably cheaper and better to zoom
What type of lens are you suggesting to go for? Most tele lenses that cost the same or less than say an 85mm prime are utter trash in my experience.
I would actually say an 85 wouldn't be bad. I agree cheap zooms are not much good, but a used prime somewhere between 70 and 120 would work pretty well on a tripod
For sure. 70 to 135mm prime would be ideal. The latter perhaps a little too narrow on a cropped sensor.
Yeah i love my 135, but then i also have a booster taking the crop from 1.6 to 1.1
Well, I went from not being sure if I would finish to finishing in 3 days. I stopped liking parts of the model and just decided to not paint them. Ended up with something decent after trying something new - now just need to escort it home and mount it
I cheated a little on the zorn by using subtly different blacks and whites.
Nice work, it's come up well!
That’s awesome! I love the shield
Yeah the shield is super cool
callin it good
it's great
Really liking this. Boar on the shield came out great.
That’s not cheating. That’s being smart.
I mean medieval shield painters would have used stencils too right
Just being authetnic
It’s amazing dude. Really sick.
Yep, looks awesome.
I’ve gotta get going on mine
so hopefully I'll be back home on Jan 20, then I'll have about 10 days to finish. Can I do it? Dunno, but at least I tried. I definitely will have learned a lot by the time I finish.
Yea you can! 🤘🏾
Looking for feedback. (Eyes need to be re-done)
Need to highlight hair some more too
@dense girder Looks pretty good from far away but is missing something that draws the eye to the face.
A couple of solutions:
- Create value contrast so the face is brighter (maybe glaze some shadows on lower parts of the minis
- glaze a different color such as red or green into the face. This one is riskier IMO
If you just focus on the face, I think it lacks contrast and texture. Did you use a brush on it? It looks largely airbrushed. I think you could glaze some delicate shadows and glossy reflection highlights to make it more interesting
The metals are 💯tho
Yeah brush was on it but went over with airbrush. Just actually added some makeup to the eyes that helps with darker contrast so will try and glaze in some higher levels too
Thanks for the input!
Sure! I think you have great use of value on the torso, but the bright lower wings maybe throwing me off
For the record though it’s pretty friggin rad
That’s a scary bust because of all the feathers
If you want to take it to the next level you can look up how to paint textures on feather and how to highlight hair
In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial, I take you through how to paint and tone brown hair. This hair is deceptively simple but really fun in how many hues you can use and still call it brown hair. Hope you enjoy!

In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial, I take you through my process for doing detailed feathered wings. For myself, you want to make the large, often flat space, of wings as interesting as possible and you can do this through undershading and glazing. I take you through the long technique as well as mentioning some ways you can keep it simple and qui...
Thanks! Yeah have changed things a few times and some of the angles don’t make complete sense lol.
Hair has always been difficult lol… will need to keep practicing
@dense girder it's a big improvement I think. There's a lot more interest in the armour now which is is cool
You might want to move more towards an orange red for the glow, that will help bring down the value which will aid in making the face more of a focal point
Can I just say that armour looks dope as fuck dude
That’s one of my favourite busts of all time
It's nice, I kind of fell out of love with it. The 75mm version is better I think.
I like the bust since it looks sad
She does, yeah, it's a different choice than a lot that you get
Brush go Brrrrr!
update
Brush go brrrrrr
Lookin good!
Thanks 😎
Nice!
Well, calling it done with this one. Not perfect by any means but a fun learning exercise.
So cool
Nailed it!
thank you!
Well, improved some areas, maybe worsened some others. But overall I think I just gotta stop on this one. So many layers of paint on this one I’m worried about adding unwanted texture at this point lol. Overall moderately happy with it so calling it done, knowing there are some areas to improve on the next one.
Looks great. Really like how you worked with the palette.
The way the half shield lines up with the background fucked with my eyes at first.
Wings look so much better like this!
Okay, that is a MUCH better composition. The changes to the wings work week and the glowing eyes do great job pulling focus. Really good work.
Thanks, and thanks for the advice along the way!
No problems, and good job following all the varying advice you got, I think it paid off.
That looks great! The diagonal axis with the wings is super cool
Did some more work on the beard and horns. Also started redoing the belt, though I'm still unsure on the direction I want to take.
Stopping here for tonight. Lots of small adjustments and refinements at this point, that probably don't amount to much, but I'm enjoying all the detail work.
Painted all the straps. Redid the nose. Small changes to the eyes.
Cleaned everything up so I'm ready to start on the metals.
Looks super good. Making me want to paint an orc bust lol
really nice work dude
@dense girder @vapid kettle Thanks guys, glad to hear it! 🙂
It’s amazing mate. The scars and eyes are unreal
Home stretch. Received some good feedback from Red in the Godzilla™ channel and did my best to implement his suggestions.
Left to do still is the spear for his back which I also need to figure out how to best attach.
As always, happy to hear feedback if you spot something that could be improved.
I like where the shield belt thing is going- is is to be metallic bronze or hide?
Well, I actually thought it was at where it was going. 🫤😂
The inspiration was copper plating with a beat up, sanded texture.
Maybe I need to put in some more work to sell that.
I think the issue might be the scratches don’t look like what you would see on beaten copper. There would be some scratching but you would also have a lot of divots from repair work, or even just smithing in the first place
Copper is soft so it’s going to show everything and give you a ton of minor reflection points
This type of finish was my inspiration. It's not supposed to be dented.
If you wouldn’t have said that’s copper I would have thought it was leather.
The stock photo that is
Same
I think it needs a bit more of a reflection
I’d try a little ab spray where you have already placed the highlight top left. And maybe some turquoise oxidation?
And give some of the scratches some depth and dimension with your shadow colour
That’s where you add a little oxidation too
A bit like that for scratches
Thanks guys, appreciate the input, but I'll go ahead and ignore it for now. 😂
I don't want deep scratches and verdigris, that's not at all the look I'm going for.
I like it as-is myself
Yeah scratches definitely optional! I’d just add a little bit of a specular reflection to make it look a bit ‘harder’
Or don’t!
I think it looks good. I wouldn’t change it
Looks shit hot bro. Your best piece I’ve seen for sure. Don’t bring this type of energy into our duel please
🥰
I'll dumb it down for you, don't worry.
But thanks! 😘
Those eyes. Great job!
Cheers dude. 😊
Everything went wrong and I’m almost repriming him 😭 I really don’t have enough patience to wait inks to dry
Ok I think it’s salvageable
I love how he looks like he is walking out of a cave into the light.
This. I saw the photo and thought, "What a nice leather pattern."

Thanks buddy, I like that interpretation. I'm seeing him on a throne in a dim hall with light shining through a window, but it's awesome to hear an alternate impression. 🙂
My mindworks stuff has arrived in the UK at the weekend - cant wait.
They arrived ^-^
Oh, those are good choicese. Love the Diner series from MW. Which one are you starting with?
I'm scared to paint the Waiter, since it's limited, so I will start with the Mech^^
Yes exactly like that xD
I'm amazed, the busts look so nice. Currently still at work (Home Office) but I will post better pics this week
oh, i didn't note that bust is limited version. I'm glad I have ordered it.
Would you be able to take a pic with something for scale when you get them out? I’m keen to get one of their own bust range but just not sure how small they have gone with the 1/12!
Sure! 🙂
Progress on the skin, thinking on pushing more the contrast tho
Ending up for the day 😮💨
What a difference between the last two photos. This rocks!
Discord bot don't allow me send WIP update
becoz my bust is like a naked women
black bars to pass bot monitoring
Too realistic to be allowed! Looking good!
haha true ...
Love her ❤️
What is a king without his weapon?
Tacked on for now. Still need to paint the straps on it and will probably not glue it on till I've switched to the final plinth.
Beautiful work!
Cheers buddy. 😊
Not very happy with the placement of the highlights for the NMM so accepting help 🥲
Which way is light coming from? I agree, at the moment it looks like it is coming from four different directions on the back circle
What is the original bust?
No idea I got it on Etsy 🫠
From top facing his face, but then maybe there should be a back light somehow too that idk how where etc 😅
terrible sketching but i’d be doing it more like that
I’m sure someone else can do better though
That's a hard one cause you gotta think if you want to treat it like a milled surface or not
That's what creates that radial anisotropic effect that you see sketched up there
You’re just making up words
The ol’ RANMM
😂
Not necessarily rounded, but a milled surface
Basically you get those cone shapes from the way the light catches these tiny grooves left by machining
I think it's cool to use wherever though because it does a good job selling "metal!" to the observer
Stunning. Love the purple hair.
yup this's Motoko's color 🫡
no bot patrolling today btw 🙂
Maybe if you write the word "boobs" in the same text as you post the image
Sorry, I slept in
oh u fixed the bot? thx lol
No hahahah
How is it looking now?
Looking good. Maybe some more shadow on his left side on his back?
Like in that back shot shadow coming from the direction of your thumb
It's so shiny, I like it ❤️
You mean on the skin?
Yes
I think I’ll shade the skin with some purple
purple the magic color 😄
Calling him done now after these okish eyes 😂
might have to shift my attention to a different bust on the weekend
my attention span is that of a 3 year old and i have completely given up on the fox jupiter bust
Nooo, it was looking so promising
Finally got back to painting after holidays
I should really continue. I was naive and thought January is chill. Now the events want attention as well 😓
Gotta figure out what color for the metal part of the weapon
(plus work on the rest of the teeth)
Looking stellar dude
Love the skin color.
@final umbra sorry for taking so long. Haven't assembled her yet, but this should do it for scale, right? ^-^
and oof those lines. my lamp and my camera don't like each other
6-7 cm
That’s great thanks!
glad to help 😄
this is probably going to be my new entry instead
will continue fox jupiter in the future haha
ohh, that is nice
Very little progress but still progress . Added some color in the back piece
Low energy crazy ideas
It's close to complete, I think 🤨
This is such an interesting sculpt. Love the direction you're taking.
This looks wild!
Doing camo pattern on cadians takes me a buttload of time so I hadn't had the time to do anything else
Haven't touched the bust I'm working on since last time
Beautiful dude. Inspiring work on the skin.
thanks!
My dude is done. More pics in #1194601501683892224.
This was fun! Can't wait to paint my next bust.
Some great changes you decided on here! Love it. The bit of plinth looking through looks also very interesting and fitting
Oof very impressive
Cheers dude. I'm really happy with how the plinth came out as well.
Excellent results bud, way to really push it!
Really appreciate it. Feedback from you and Red especially helped step it up.
And I was thinking of you when I shot the photos, since I tried the black box trick and lit it by [gasp] LED. 😂
amazing work by everyone in this Paint-a-Long. Really cool stuff 🙂
Love the rembrandt style lighting
I will just creep slowly forward while you guys finish 😆
Some more light for the right side. Having a hard time...
I like these sides
I will need to catch up on the weekend. My bust is primed and ready to be painted, but I will first finish the cold along xd

Had some time last night to do some more work on my bust. Need to go back and refine the beads
I finally started. 🙌
It's juste a base coat, but it's a start. So much space to paint 😱
love the palette for the hair!
taking my time painting pores and doing minor corrections
the process is basically the same for any miniature! but the difference is you have a bigger canvas to explore. you got this!
thank you ^-^
So natural. Looks awesome.
thanks!
still in its ugly phase
but i got some basic sketching down
will tackle the cloak
I can tell that sword is gonna be tasty though
i hope so!
will study my references next sesh
time to revisit some reenactment pages
Whilst we were partying, @balmy vigil studied the blade
Since I almost finished my fabric along entry, might already post I'd like to participate in this PAL with this one 🙂 Not sure if I have enough time to finish this one before the PAL ends, but wanted to try at least 😄
I feel like I'm mostly just undoing and redoing the same things, so I'm calling this dude done.
My bust finished
It's done
Sorry for the spam like posting, I cant send the photos together, the bot blocked me from posting them....
Painting goals for sure. Beautiful work.
Thank you 🥰
Bloody gorgeous work there, great job!
Thanks for the like
Zenithalled the bugger
And then I remembered I wanted to try NMM on the headpiece, staff and bracers
Is a zenithal a good base for NMM? 😅 Figured it might have been easier on pure black
Pure black and gloss varnish is an old trick to try and identify where the main reflections should be.
I’d normally go black or a very dark grey and just paint it on after the zenithal
Thanks, yeah that helps 🙂
And ofc i post it in the wrong channel
Skin tone base coat and blacked out the to be NMM parts
Interesting bust 😄
Working on the headpiece NMM. It's going places, but... Meh? 🤔
Looking good so far
Some tweaking, I'm starting to like where it's going. Especially for a first ever proper attempt at NMM 😄
Roughing out the shoulder guard. Having a much harder time with this one 😅
Looks really awesome dude
Starting new one.
looks awesome! getting some pre-undead sylvanas windrunner vibes
oh man I've always admired this sculpt. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
Progress! but a lot is still missing ^^ (Like her arms and the bottom of the bust but pfffft details)
Several difficulties for this one. First, there was no arrow shaft on the package. I don't know it was the production mistake, or not.. Created custom one using bamboo chopstick.
Underpainting is done.
Then, I accidently dropped the mini and the tip of the crown was broken and missing. I sculpted the tip with an wooden coffee stick, and positioned with CA glue, then give extra strength with epoxy glue.
Then, I attached arrow string using one of the sewing threads my wife has.
Finally, it's ready for the actual paint job but I lost all energy today. Perhaps later. 😅
Great choice for her hair color!
workin on face again, this eyebrows dont have a sculpt so it is up to me how to make them look good
I feel for you!
I never mentioned at the time because I got too mad at myself and discouraged, but I wasn't careful enough with where I placed my bust and knocked it over and broke three of the horns.
It took a full 24 hours for the big front horn to show up in the most unlikely of places.
Looks like you've done a good job of the repairs.
Oh man it looks like it knocked most of the paint off it too and stripped it back to the basecoats
Eh?
Sorry bad joke
oof hope you can fix him. maybe he will get some nice battle scars out of this D:
Just to be clear, this happened long ago, before it was finished. Everything glued up perfectly since they were clean breaks.
ahhhhhh
gotcha ^^ phew! I though you knocked him over after he was finished. glad that it was way before :3
Beautiful hair dude!
Sloooowly trying to get the hang of this NMM thing
Refined and smoothed it a bit with the airbrush, got most of the roughness away I think
Was 🤏 this close to blacking out the bracer, but I'm giving it another shot, see if I can get it cleaned up a bit
I think I'm going to call it quits on this one, made a small amount of changes but never quite hit the level I wanted. Does feel better than earlier version.
Good job bro! That’s an intimidating model.
Really coming along nicely. Will you be keeping the gems black? Has a cool onyx look right now.
That's a lot of hair! Love the red you went with, makes it remind me a bit of Brave.
Thanks! 🙏 I was thinking of either a deep blue or jade green for the gems to be honest 😄
That will look cool as well. It just struck me when I saw them, that I haven't really seen people do black gems a lot.
Which makes sense since painting colored gems is to fantastically rewarding. 😄
Yeah indeed 😄 There's a lot of stuff on this model that's pretty shiny. Even the scarab carapaces might get some shiny effect too 🙂
Made some more progress. The NMM is as good as done, will do the touching up near the end. Quite like the blue colour with the gold
Oh, I LOVE that.
Ok, not much time left in the month, but I just got home, so I'll be resuming my girl soon.
Going places
Not sure what to do with the collar though... Maybe an even darker blue? 🤔
I might try a purple
Hmm. Gonna try that 🙂
Alright, I'm feeling it 🙂 I'm going with this, thanks @vapid kettle
👌
Yes, this looks really nice!
It’s looking really good mate. Super sick
Tried to make the scarabs look a bit iridescent.
I didn't get time to say so but she's lovely! Congrats, catlord!
Oh wow, that's quite a story! Now she's even more unique.
Here is what was in the package for mine. The shaft is a metal pole. Your sculpting of the crown feather thingy is really good.
The original one.
Hmm, no string included though. What is it you've used? I'm wondering if cat moustache hair would work. (Some they naturally lost I mean, there's no way I'd take a live one.)
hehe, thanks!
Umm, fishing line?
I don't have any at the moment. Do you know what diameter they come at?
working on fur, is it looking good?
Looks amazing!
I’m no fisher but see them in local shops and they seem to range from pretty thick to almost invisbly thin
@final umbra mate, you are mighty painter, can you give a bit of feedback on this piece if you don’t mind? preping this model for competition
Oh man, thanks but I’m no better than you going by this piece, it’s beautiful! I wouldn’t even know where to begin improving it without risking spoiling it (if it were my own mini)
now i am thinking about doll colors, i want to flex a bit and paint them as patterned cloth but i guess textures on textures will be busy considering fur
I guess.. maybe… there is something around the tones in the highlights of the hair? As they are all fairly similar in hue/tone as well as value but as its quite shiny you might expect some variation? I have no idea though really! I’m just sort of giving criticism for the sake of it there since you asked.
Yeah I’d try and find a good refence for something there. Like is it cotton or lace?
may be polka dot but it is kinda ruining composition by being focal point instead of head
I’d avoid a pattern on it, as you say, it would be distracting
may be push a story with it a bit more making it dirty and old, like it is her old toy and it is dirty and mossy but she still likes it
i can freehand some cracs of faceplate of toy too
a bit of story telling and greenish spots may rhyme with blue hair a bit
i will photoshop few green blue tones there tommorow, will see. Good idea
Just paint her as elsa from frozen
A faded green dress with mud at the bottom would make a nice colour scheme with the blue and orange on there now
I finally got my bust assembled.
Gotta gapfill a little and prime now. (Little nsfw)
Working on the skin of the chest and face. Wanted it to be less blue and look more like dried crumbly skin. What do you folks think?
Skin looks dope like this. Liking the scarabs as well.
Thanks! That helps a bit as I keep on second guessing myself as I make progress 😅
Boy don't I know that feeling. I always get to a point where I really can't tell if what I'm doing is even remotely good.
WOW thanks for the photo. I wasn’t sure if it comes with the shaft. For the bow strings I used a thread from assorted sewing kit, which is slightly thicker one like 0.5mm or so.
Slightly progressing..
Thanks for the diameter!
The flames already look neat!
I might have to get that one, it looks fantastic. Maybe I'm partial to busts with extended accessories.
rain needs to stop. I can't airbrush with my window closed.
She is primed (nsfw)
She's gonna be gorgeous!
Im excited. Ive been following this mini since it was just a concept in a sense.
Weathering the cloak a bit. Not sure if I love it yet, but it better fits the "I just awoke after wearing the same clothes for two thousand years" I guess 😅
I see this was made into a tutorial. That kind of two-fer is almost cheating. What's next, tutorial-a-long?
... actually, I was surprised it was a leather tutorial and not a skin tutorial considering how much effort and time was put in his skin.
Not really, I don't paint that model at all in the video haha
I just used it on the thumbnail
Ahh. That makes sense
So eh, this one might be done-ish? 😄
Still have the base/plinth to finish up, but the figure is done at least 😄
Quite happy with the result for my first ever bust
I found the motivation to start working on her again
Yeah he's done now! Thought about doing NMM on the plinth as well, but I figured that might have been distracting from the bust itself. Painted it black and called it good 🙂
looks awesome! and you are so fast!
It feels as if you started yesterday with that bust xD
Also, I had a bit of a flu last week so I had some spare time to do some painting 😉
(but I'm really good at procrastinating my bust, so...)
Quite some hours went into this one, not sure if I want to count 🙈
ah ^^ hope you are better now (more time to paint is nice, but being sick is not)
Yeah, feeling better now, thanks 🙂
Well well well it's 7 more days to finish for bonus points 🙈. I hope I can get a lot of mileage on the weekend
Let us suffer together. I'm so far behind ...
Im primed and thats bout it... i feel i might not finish in time.
Make it an art piece and just brush on some massive lines 😉
Lol nah. I waited too long for that bust to just half ass it.
Didn't know about the bust along, i just finished mine tho 😅
I made some progress basecoating and shes looking purple. God i hope im doing this right lol (nsfw
a lot of people like Magenta as a skin basecoat so it is definitely workable
Thank you for your confidence boosting words. Ive onyl dont magenta basecoat once amd it didnt turn out awful but i didnt have the patience or knowledge on how to layer and glaze
Well, each different method includes a different process, but you can look at other peoples guides that do the magenta thing. But always remember, if you hate it, some ISO and qtips is all you need to start over.
Yeah. Plus side. Its a resin mini so enlimited retries i just have to not drop it
Even if you drop it, it can probably be fixed with milliput.
Thoughts on the skin? I might call it good
I ended up with a darker tone than i normally do... again.
Jeez I'm feeling lost now. I guess I will repaint the skin? It's not really working as I can't get the black dark enough for the effect.
I need some critique and outside input. I worked on the arm and cloak on the left side, blocked a purple for the bands and added some texture to the red. Bit of clean up overall.
I would like to get feedback on overall concept as I feel like it's falling apart and which areas need the most work in your guys opinion.
I also forgot that she has another shoulder
Is the shine from the lamp or painted on? If the light is coming from above I would say you can go lighter even for dark skin.
I believe a bit of both. Im struggling to gobrighter without it being too yellow
Ah I see! She still reads like a reddish Indian woman to me currently. Her stretched hand looks like a very good highlight color without lots of yellow 👀
Interested in where you will take her ☺️ maybe continue on some other area to see how the skin works in context
Shes definitly a lot brighter in the picture than in person. But yeah im excited to see where it goes
I think you’ve been looking at this too much with too critical eyes man. It’s fucking super cool to me. The added shine on the metallics made a huge difference.
If you did the same intensity on sword hilt
It’d be ace.
@lament crescent i looked thoroughly at your pictures and here's my 2 cents. I think that at this stage, rather than the concept, you lack color play. You picked up a cool and difficult idea and i think you mostly nailed the light placement (tho for instance i would shift the light on the vambrace a bit closer to the light source). Anyway since it's an overall dark ambience, you need to achieve contrast with color temperature. Here the warmest is the probably the yellow that you used to give color to you lights (assuming the pictures shows it well), while your red is definitely colder. The "black" at this point should use an even colder tone, which could be violet or even blue that you might include in your dark mix. You could help yourself selling the effect also by adding some textures on the cloth, suggesting a narrow highlight in the fart that faces the lightsource. For the face it basically goes the same way but ofc with different colors. Also there you places your highlight as a circle around the nose and mouth, while the light suggests more of a sharp cut shape. Hope this helps!
Thank you
With hilt do you mean the cross guard, blade or the star thingy at the end?
I didn't think a lot about color contrast in the blacks. Is a very good input to consider for these moody scenes when you don't want lots of highlights. The black is for sure a bit on the blue side but not super saturated. The orange light on the right is most saturated after the red fabric for sure.
Maybe I can increase the cloak texture a bit or add some stitches close to the edge of the cloak. It's supposed to be silk inside and I guess something wax coated wool or whatever outside
Am i misunderstanding the direction of lighting on it? you have highlights on one half of the hood thing but not any at all on the other half
She has a warm strongish light behind her on the lower right and a faint blueish light above and on her left
ok
There is no light in front in theory only from the sides
yeah. i see now.
I think that's what's got me lost for now. For instance the red fold (on the center slightly her left, our right) leading to the face should be darker where it faces center because no light hits it? But then it's something you'd want to highlight because it helps composition, right?
the highlights on the sword's blade tries to tell me the dominant light is coming from her top right, but it's not colored. Shouldn't the bottom-facing edge be lighter than the top-facing one?
Cross guard and star thingie
Hmm maybe difficult to see the angles I suppose or I made a mistake. These are the directions the light is coming from in theory
And it looks dope as all hell, but the sword feels like it might lack bounce light despite your directional light, metal would pick up all the bounce no ? Food for thought. I reckon it looks fkn sick either way mate:)
For sure! The Sword I can probably do whatever I want really. Bounce light is the only thing I suppose I can use to highlight some things like her face. Other than that adding some blues/purples to the shadows of the orange light will probably help as well adding some shade on the right
It was like this yesterday.
And I think it's done now.

I think i mightave figured out what i did wrong?
I used the three on the right. For my highest highlight should i have swapped put the base flesh woth the reddish flesh?
More progress. Lets see if i can finish in two days.
I think im gunna get finished wohoo
I don't think I make it
Legit just have to finish the snake. Do a couple touch ups on the tentacle and paint the rim and im done.
This has been one hell of a journey.
I need ideas for whay to do with the snake.
Paint it in black and white. Like a badger.
Maybe.
A serious suggestion would be something brighter to contrast the skin
Maybe like one of those coral snakes?
Im going to try to do kingsnake. Which is close in coloration to coral snake
Yeah that’s cool
Definitely. I tried to do that with the tentacle. The lighting plus shitty phone camera makes everything blend together. I swear it looks better in person.
I think i need to do more highlighting on the red too. Its looking a little flat
Is there anything else i should take a second look at on it?
Shes done (nsfw
I finished in a bit of a rush but done!!!
I had good first impression! It was really weird to paint at this scale but I'll do it again in the future
Busts are fun
Yes! Even if I won't finish mine this month, I learnt that I like busts ^-^
Aye congrats! Interested how she looks on a dark background
Nice job also finished in time 🙌 I like the hat it reads a bit shiny to me
Thanks. I definitely need to push contrast on skin more when i have more knowledge on how to do so. I want to get a stand for her then maybe ill take pictures with my actual camera
Great work everyone, this was fun in this paintalong 🤘
I feel the same, even if I didn't finish my bust. ^-^ it was nice to see the progress on all the busts

Fully agree! Great job everyone 🙂 Liked following everyone's progress along
So lovely. That blue cloth is spectacular.
Thanks! I had a few accidents before I managed to pull it off lmao
dont really want to push myself with competition piece with PAL timeframe, congratz everybody who made it in time!
Where to buy it?! Gorgeous 😍
It would be nice to have a compilation photo of all the finished pieces!
That would be fun
@everyone if you want to be in the collage (which we will share in the general channel and here) please upload one (1) photo of your bust to this folder. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1rI-WIwYzmHnYmIpKiPyIvZhCviyakA__?usp=sharing
I think only mods can tag everyone. So you'll have to go through the thread and tag individually, unfortunately.
I dont think i could have mine in it due to it showing skin
How long do we have? I need to take better pictures
No rush
30 minutes starting now.
I really really like red elements, they look super realistic: 😻
Thanks!
