#help me paint half a face!

the paint for the eyes is exceeding the actual space they occupy on the sculpt
good way to paint heavily recessed eyes like this is to do the eyes first, then paint in the rest of the face around them carefully
otherwise just take an extremely fine brush, dot in the iris, then dot in white next to the iris
and I mean extremely fine
make sure the paint is very flowy and use a tiny amount
here's one I did recently of the same scale
literally just started from a dark brown basecoat
2 dots of offwhite to form the sclera around the basecoat iris
then painted the face green around it
you may notice I only painted a single eye as well
if the face is heavily shadowed you can get away with that easily
oh actually that was a lie, I actually painted the face first on this one and just dotted in the sclera
this was the face before the eye went in
concept remains though, you can just let the dark basecoat form the iris and dot in white next to it
Yeah, I usually do the eyes that way (iris and then white), I was just having a hard time getting the placement ok on this face for some reason. Could be the brush tip is going, will try with a finer/newer brush later
the main problem with this face in particular is that you've extended his eyes all the way to the tops of his cheeks
I sketched in green where the sclera roughly should be
eh it might be a bit further down than that
it's a bit hard to gauge on the current image
oh and also you'll want to give him eyebrows
just some dark shadow where the brows should be is fine
oh another thing
you can almost never see much sclera above or below the iris in someone looking directly forwards
drawing in white below the iris at this scale will usually make something look comedically exaggerated
One thing you might want to try is underpainting. Basecoat orange all over. Then basecoat yellow On the top of the head. Then basecoat red in the eyes nose and mouth. Run some thin glazes of a flesh color. Afterwards hit it with a red wash oil or acrylic.
Here are some heads I did as practice
Yeah, that’s a good idea, I have found I end up blowing my value contrast pretty quickly if I’m not careful if I’m purely layering, and end up having to do a lot of back and forth
May be time for me to get magnifying glasses, was having such a hard time with it yesterday. I think you’re totally right though, can’t believe I had to have it pointed out. I think I’ve got a bare plastic duplicate of this head around somewhere, I’ll check where the eyes actually are located and adjust. Thanks!
Yeah I think I will
This face is killing me
I messed around with it for about an hour, mostly on the left eye socket. Way better but I just cannot get they left eye working, I think it’s a tough angle for me
a little too far out to the sides
but you're definitely getting there
it's a fucking pain to do this without a magnifier
if it were me painting this btw, I'd fudge this by just painting a giant shadow over the entire left side of the face
Yeah, I think this one may be tough even with it, it’s super hard to get a good angle with the face so recessed in the armor
since his head is turned towards that direction
Yeah that’s not a bad idea
sorry I meant left side
I gave him a little scar so maybe just white it out, I dunno
the side that's closer to his armour
Yeah no worries I follow
since the skin has a purple shade btw the eyes would look better with purple shadows rather than black
will still define their shape but won't look so comic book
Alright that’s as good as it’s gonna get, I think I gotta move on
Yeah, I had started it purple but yeah just can’t land the dots right and blacked the whole thing out
Next time I’ll hop back to purple
honestly it's not bad
rest of the model's looking fucking crisp btw, I like it
definitely order a magnifier if you don't have one yet
it'll change everything when it comes to eyes
Yeah I will. I’d been putting it off but it’s been a tiring couple weeks and I can really feel the difference in my vision doing this. So it’s probably time
