#beginner looking to buy paint thinners

I am looking to get some alternatives to water to use as thinners for mini painting, but am unsure what options are out there and what I would need to adequately cover my bases. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

Perhaps it is simply me using too much water, but I find that I have trouble with it forming blobs of paint and acting more like a wash on the mini rather than smoothly flowing.

That would be from the brush being too loaded for where you have the paint diluted to
