#what is it I’m missing with my miniature?

Hi!
I’ve been painting a death guard mini for a bit and have been doing a kind of semi drybrushing method to give it a dirty look and a smooth(ish) transition from dark to light

But, it just feels off. I understand I should add highlights to the eyes and need to paint the “wing”, but it feels like a problem with the whole mini. What’s wrong?

It will look a lot different with the trim painted

it's very hard to tell but I tried to paint the trim on the shoulder pad...

what did you paint it?

#

I see some grey

#

Are you using contrast paints or a gloss wash?

I was being kind of experimental and was trying to do a black wash so I could keep the highlighting from the drybrushing

#

I probably should have done the drybrushing in monochrome and then done a green glaze over the armor plating and black over the trim in retrospect

a black wash over your highlights will knock the value of them down so they aren't as obvious. If you find everything too harsh after a dry brush, a glaze of the mid-tone color, so like your base green thinned down a lot, will help bring everything closer to that middle color (instead of dirtying up everything with black).
One method is what you described, to dry brush everything like an imitation zenithal prime, and then use a transparent contrast paint or transparent thin layer just to put the color in.

would glazing over a drybrush highlights be called like a... bougie slapchop method?
that's besides the point sorry
right now, my concern is how to salvage the mini. maybe should I just paint a contrasting color, like a bronzy or warm one, on the trims?

#

then edge highlight or something to make it all pop

Bronze or brass color is the typical DG trim, right? I think it's a good scheme

#

cause black or gunmetal metallic is very dark. Which that's fine if that's what you want.

I was hoping to go for a black/darker scheme, originally. Maybe I should just paint the black trim on, and then highlight again on top?

that could work, just try it o ut

ok! well, either way, thank you for advice!

If you want dark trim then try a lighter green on the panels (I can send you a recipe if you'd like)

#

If you want dark armor then try a more light trim

#

Or a lighter element of the armor

it was kind of supposed to be a lighter green with the panels

#

going to push it to a lighter tone
