#How do you get paint to stick to pointy outy bits
47 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Both, depends on if I'm lazy and dont dig my handle out. I have limited space in my appartment, so I pack things tightly away each time.
My buddy suggested using a nail file and scratching it up a bit
Could be that you’re holding the mini itself. You’ll come into contact with protruding bits more.
That is possible, but some of these parts would be really hard to tough accidentally
And are you:
- washing your minis before applying primer/paint?
- priming your minis?
- using a glove to hold your mini if you don't use a handle?
Yes, Yes, and Yes. Knees and Elbows are the only places I'm having a hard time getting paint to stick on
Washing minis?
Using gloves?
That is why I said "yes, yes and yes." I was replying to all threee.
ohhhhhhh lol. Sorry.
Can, I'm using Citidel Grey or Army Painter Black
It's recommended for hard plastic models, mandatory for soft plastic, resin and metal: washing with warm soapy water and a gentle brush, just to eliminate any trace of release agents/plasticisers/grease/dirt that is on the surface and could lower the adhesion of the paint. For gloves, it's a bit of the same, that will prevent putting grease on the surface, and also paint are more likely to flake if you touch it with bare hand.
Soke latex gloves are fine?
Yes
I’ve never washed my plastic.. never had this issue. Weird. Tho I doubt many people assemble with gloves on. So there’s some validity.
I'm only washing and wearing gloves because someone told me to, didn't really question why. Lol
For hard plastic like GW and the like, you can do without. But it's always better when you wash.
Keeping fingerprint grease off is sensible. Tho I’ve never had an issue with primer adherence.
Sounds like you are saying the paint doesn’t adhere to the primer layer tho? Right?
It isn't primer adhereance I'm having an issue with. It is the paint not sticking to areas that jut out suddenly like knees.
Ok. Well I would say that the paint it over thinned with water. Tried medium? Although I see you have tried undiluted….
You know what… paint doesn’t defy physics…
Hold the point facing down while you paint and it drys
I'm starting to wonder if that's not a counter-intuitive issue. You said you put thick paint on these area and still have the issue. Have you tried putting thinner layers, even if that means putting more of them?
If you zoom in. On their knuckle on the hand going across the waste
I’ve hit that spot with paint at least 5 times
Your paint fully mixed?
Sorry if this sounds daft but basically you paint doesn’t have enough surface tension to stay where it is. So that can only be the surface or the paint. If the primer is sticking then in theory the surface itself should be fine. So then the paint is the issue. If you are no diluting then it is not that you have thinned it too much. So the only thin left really is that the medium and pigments might not be mixed fully or the paint is not viscous enough.
Genuinely see if it dries with proper coverage if the point is facing down.
Okay, I will try with it facing down. I suppose you're suggesting it might be running off?
That’s exactly what you are saying is happening
It’s either happening wet, or while drying, but the pigments are being pulled away from that point
Grease was a sensible suggestion as it will repel the moisture. So do use a painting holder. But if it’s not that then it’s just plain ol gravity.
You either need thicker paint or less forces
I assume it’s just that green paint that does it?
The brown hair for example is more pointy lol.
The hair was done with contrast paints, which I dont seem to have any issue with. Yes it seems to be specific to this green. But I have had the same issue with Corvus Black on really sharp edges.
OK, I see. If it's running off, that means you brush was too loaded with paint and water.
After loading your brush, and before applying it to your mini, dab it on a kitchen towel. That will drag out the excess water, and you will be able to apply thin coats that will stay where they were placed and not run-off
Ah. You said you were applying it neat with no water and it still happening. But is you brush loaded with water already from cleaning?
Definitely possible, didn't consider that
