#where do I go from here? first mini.

Hello! The picture is mostly blur from what I can see. Is there a chance you could take another one? Sometimes I found I need to be a little further away from the mini to get a mostly okay pic with my phone.
Yah, I was struggling to get a good shot, I can see if I can take another
Likely the answer is:
1 - Keep on painting. This isn't something you get by a snap of fingers or whatever. It's a trade you start a journey into. 😉
2 - Neatness: this is the usual feedback for most people when starting. Try to paint each area and material with its own color without overflowing. And if you do, no problem (we all do): just make sure you get that other color and fix the overflow by painting over with the right color
Yup, tot's! You have strong light but I'll be just fine. Going to adjust my thoughts by actually looking at the mini 😉
I'd say you're fairly neat already
probably a couple of fixes here and there we could discuss if you want?
is the weapon finished? If yes, would you be ok with sharing a pic' taken from 90° left?
example of area:
- not sure why the tip of the sword is green. Is it meant to be poison?
- his left leg legging (whatever it's called) has its top edge green. You can make your life easier for these by using the brush at an angle. In this case, if your brush has grey-black and is coming at about 45° from above the horizon to the legging, and you slide it maybe from the legging (or directly on the edge if you want to try it) it should hit the legging before the skin. Of course if you push it can paint over the skin. 😉
On the other leg, the thing I circled with a question mark, I'm not sure what it is. Can you tell me more?
Zoomed a lot to see that one, pretty sure it wouldn't get noticed individually easily from table top: leather paint on the pendant.
More a matter of "convention" for interpretation of the 3D of the mini: I personally would paint the hashed area the same color as the ... well how do we call this? underwear? My assumption being we would see other 3D pieces if this was just 1 piece of loin cloth 😉
but overall I'd say pretty clean. Try another mini, see if this gives you another set of things to wonder about?
and if you're all green and dandy, go for volumetric highlights and shadows?
Neither weapon are finished. I am not so concerned about those. I was just worried about skin and so on. So no worries about that one 🙂
On the kroot skin they have these spines, similar to their heads. You can see them on the legs and arms
Not a loin cloth, it’s flesh, like the under belly of a lizard. One second I’ll take a photo of box art
Not the same model, but shows what I mean
Hmm, I see
I’ll have to look this up
I should have said just highlights & shadows, then?
It just means you care about the shape of the body / item part when trying to choose where to place the highlights. (The direction of the light matters too)
One 'issue' with the model is that it's very shiny, which could also be the lighting, but that's not really a big issue since once you're done painting the model, a matte varnish will ungloss it a bit.
Thank you, the light is very bright and it has not been matte varnished yet. So hop[efuilly you're right at the shiny-ness goes down
Other than that, looks good man.
thank you!
GW has a pretty great guide on photographing minis. Normal home lighting tends to make minis look a lot worse than they actually are
