I'm new to miniature painting and olny have painted 2. I like to see what you guys have done and I'm just impressed with the work that you guys can do! And the works in progresses. Some of them look finished to me but are just the start for some of y'all. I'm doing hand painting and heard a lot on the internet that people use airbrushes to paint their miniatures. I'm just blown away with the quality and designs and all of it and has been curious on what gear you guys use to make such great miniatures that I could never create.

I wouldn't advise buying an airbrush straight away. It's a great tool, but not an essential one.
i would say, continue painting with standard brush, after a few months, buy a few good sable brushes, then if you really like painting, then it can be time buying an airbrush. But like any tool, it will take some time to get used to it.

Got it, thanks. For the help. I have one already but I mostly use it to add on the primer

This was my second one and the kind of work I do

I olny have a size 8 needle. It's quite large

#

to my mind there are only four essential- not synthetic brushes, wet pallet ( i use container with parchment paper), good lamp/ preferably two and paper towel to get rid of excess water

#

artist brushes usually too soft for mini painting

plucky light
#

Oh? I just thought a paint brush is a paint brush

#

There was one that came with my airbrush paint for detail work that is a 5/0

junior plank
#

they do have different bristle length and stiffness

#

an sizes obviously

plucky light
#

Yes

junior plank
#

i think this sized are usable for literally everything

#

more skilled you are - less small brushes you need

plucky light
#

Oh

#

I got these big tall ones

#

I usually just dip the tip into my paint. But I didn't know there was special brushes for mini painting. I thought people just had very still hands

#

I guess I need special paint brushes

#

It seems like it would help a lot on my work for getting the nice fine lines I need on the minis. I didn't try to add detail to my second one because I couldn't get too fine of a line

#

try finding one and feel difference, also for better control try using more points of contact with table

plucky light
#

Ah

#

Thanks

#

I'll definitely look at some miniature painting brushes

junior plank
#

i usually press my elbow against my knee, hand against the table and left hand pressing on the table holding handle

#

btw handle is great tool, you can buy blue tack, press it on medicine bottle and use as perfect all size handle

Bare in mind, brush sizes are not standardised. A size 1 from one company might be the same size as a size 2 from another.

Okie

I'm definitely going to try the more contact points when painting today's mini. I'll see if new brushes are a asap thing and improve on my skills so I can get better by the day. I don't want to wait till I can get new brushes when I can expand to my working capacity with the tools I have now

#

If I can get a close result to what I think I can do and what other people can do when painting with special brushes then it might not be a asap thing

#

But thank you all for the help

Sables are expensive but if you care for them they’re more cost effective than synthetics. And the difference in quality is huge.

Wait I think I got professional brushes for Christmas when I got most of my gear

#

Never used em

#

I gotta try em

#

They are by atlas brush co

#

Made in china

#

They are stiffer

#

I'll test them out and do research on them

#

Thanks everyone for the feedback

#

Definitely would take it into consideration

A stiff hair brush like hog hair won't be too useful for applying acrylic, but can sometimes be good for oil painters
