Day 1078, worked more on the serpent folk squad. I finished number 6 of 9.
@obsidian estuary @placid crystal questioning our dates here, not sure what timezone BadAttitude is on but we should be on 1079 on the 13th (Psykka runs on the same first digit). My sheet tracking is automatic and -1 because of the title, so this should be the correct one 😅
I'm actually on 1809 according to my app. So I've messed up a day cound somewhere upstream
yeah that should be right. I'm often syncing mine to yours for the last digit
Day 682, adding color to his claws and hat horns, attached to base, trying to fill in bits that were unpainted around his armor, mostly on the feet.

Day 348: some shadows on the samurai
Day 687, attached a couple more pieces to work on painting.
I mentioned this a while ago, but finally got a call from the hospital and going to surgery on December 3rd so my streak will be over then
Looks like I'll finish at a little bit under 1100 days, we'll see what will happen after and if I'll be able to do a comeback or not!
But I guess I'll keep it up for the next 2 weeks while I still can
Streak day #1814
Hit up the other 3
Hope everything goes well for you
Hope the best. And remember you can read sth too as part of the hobby so if you are able to cannot fail the streak!!!
@pearl crow I wish you a good outcome, I will miss my streak buddy who keeps my day count correct. Please try the reading, just a paragraph will do. You could get a friend to read it to you. What is important is you are thinking about it and learning something
Thanks for the wishes! Unfortunately I think I'll be so entirely knocked out for 2-3 days that I may not even be able to read, but that might be a cool option if I'm able
Maybe I should try to get a physical book of some sort for that
Streaking day 1084: some color on the hair and my secret santa project (which is now a 2 week deadline instead of 4 😱 )
Day 53: just a little bit of underpainting
Day 55 planned some christmas gifts, the old world marauders that release on sunday, chaos Giant and perhaps a kitbashed hero
Day 68: painting this guy’s incinerator. I want it to be red.
Day 17: ongoing finish the cape started with dress
Day 1084, made a little progress
@pearl crow I take a physical book on trips, lots of pictures helps
yeah I'm thinking if I should get a physical book or watch videos. not sure which is easier
Day 349: finishing up the samurai
Hey hope the surgery is done well, the outcome successful, and your recovery quick
Day 688, started putting color on the base, and trying to smooth out blends on the banner.
I was going to work on the parts I glued on yesterday, but the paint wasn't sticking.. realized I forgot to prime the bits and bobs.
Streak day #1815
Only worked on 2 tonight. Got a bit busy
Day 56 worked on the left shoulder pad
Day 54: blocking mettalics
Day 18: more with dress
Day 1085, added more color shift paint to my Seldome-Used-Along eagle
Streaking day 1085: worked on the spear
Day 69, Nemesis Force Swords
Day 350: based the samurai, now all done
Day 689, did a little glueing of tiny spikey bits I'm pretty sure won't stay, and also spent about half an hour soaking a brush in cleaner off and on, after I pulled one of my filberts yesterday and found it wasn't a filbert anymore. Looks a lot better now
Streaking day 1086: a mysterious sneak peek into my secret santa project
Day 57 started painting my last eightbound for my World eaters army
Day 55: first speedpaint glazes(went to bed without taking photo:(()
Day 19 more goblins
Day 70, primed some more paladins, and for something a little different, painted rulers to use for Daggerheart measuring
Day 351: painted the rims on the kappa. Also realized I should have sealed them, and then mounted them on the bases with resin water, because the matte sealant has completely clouded the water. Looks like they're walking on frost now ❄️
Day 1086, worked some on the cost and bags
Day 690, only two more pieces to attach. I think. Started adding some colors to several of the new bits.
forgot to post yesterday.
Streak day #1815
Just slapped a bit more blood on another guy.
Todays post coming soon
Streak day #1816
Blooded another some more
Streaking day 1087: More secret project
Day 20 building some minis
Day 58 more reds and gold trim
What do y’all do to keep up your streak while traveling? 🤔
@loud warren reading a book on painting, sculpting or some thing related, cleaning up minis, some times photos for basing or diorama planning, getting basing materials like getting sand from the sea shore. If it is related to painting or sculpting and is advancing your hobby it counts. There are scraping tools and sand paper or sponges you can pack with some minis. You can be creative, you can always post and ask us.
Day 1087, made some good progress on the gunslinger
I have a little travel sized box with foam. I take a few minis to clean mould lines on. Or it can fit a couple paints so I might do just one colour section and highlights.
If I'm away for longer I bring a bigger box with some more paints
@loud warren my big issue when traveling is I don’t have access to my magnifying lamp, I can’t do any real detail work without it, just depends on what you need to work
Thanks for the feedback!
I have a headlamp/magnifiers combo that can go on the road.
Day 71, I built October’s mini of the month to potentially bring along—I won’t be upset if I mess him up.
Also doing a little basing work on the paladins
Day 352: just a li'l assembly on a mando
@loud warren If I'm going by car I take some models I've been meaning to assemble and do the clipping, mould line scraping and glueing up. It's relatively easy to do in bad light. Or when I'm at the couch watching TV with the kids where the light is terrible, I might do the base layers or drybrushing on some terrain pieces like trees and bushes.
On my last business trip I had to fly so brought along like 8 paints and a single brush and some minis and slapped a basecoat on them--a little wonkier than usual on the baseboat, but it'll get cleaned up when I do the other layers.
Day 691, working with some of this sort of stuff tonight; adding basing materials to models mostly after a documentary
Work on worldbuilding docs for my part. Camping on a mountainside after flying doesn't really lend itself to trying to paint 🙂
I think ikea has little bendy magnifying lamps that would work in a pinch
@obsidian estuary thanks I’ll look into it
Streak day #1817
Went into the city to see the living end play tonight. Got home at 4am so just slapped a quick bit on this guy
Streaking day 1088: Mystery pics continue, maybe they will give some clues!
Day 72, organized, cleaned up, packed supplies!
Day 58 more metals, also missed out on the new marauders, bummer
Day 21 building more minis. No photo. Tomorrow all finished will post
Day 1088, started on the bases
Day 353: gondor calls for aid
Day 692, no energy, but put some skin color on this guy and painted a base on the rope.
Day 73:silver base coat
Streak day #1818
Primed these so i have the numbers for AoW this month
Day 59 last eightbound done
Streaking day 1089: More secret project (you will prohbably get only this kind of stuff for the next week
)
Day 22 priming some of the ones i built uesterdsy
Day 1089, made some good progress
Love the hair
Day 2 with some volumetric highlighting. I’m really struggling to find the right gradation.
Streak day #1819
Bit on this guy.
Also @loud warren here is my longer term travel box. House sitting for 2 weeks. Glued some sheet metal into an ALDI artists box so I can magnetise models in here. Without the painting handles it fits tons of paints and like 30-40 models on top easily
They also make excellent tournament boxes for skirmish games like malifaux. All your dice, tokens, and measuring widgets fit in the bottom with the odd large mini and the small ones go on top.
Where are these minis from?
kingdom death monster, looking at blushing owl, flower knight and slenderman.
Thank you! The Slenderman and Gold Smoke Knight are awesome sculpts. I bet they'd be a blast to paint.
The Dung Beetle Knight also looks awesome.
Streaking day 1090: got some color on it!
Day 60 tried painting a green lizardman, i for some reason dislike painting seraphon minis, perhaps its bc im not good with "blank canvas" miniatures.
Day 354: queued it up and forgot to post yesterday--more soldiers
Day 74 was busy and the lighting was dreary, but I got some gold lettering done.
Also pictured is the box I picked up from The Container Store. It transported my palette, brushes, headlamp/magnifying glasses, and more paints than minis because my son threw in his paints & brushes, too 🥰 His big ol’ Tyranids had to travel in a separate box.
Forgot to post this last night, 693, goatman horns and loincloth painted
Day 355: Back to painting the Hametsu guys
Day 1090, I am about done, did some cleanup
Forgot to post yesterday day 23 starting warmachine
Day 694, finally had enough oompa to mix up some glaze to do some layers on his armor
Day 3: realized I needed some more saturation so experimented on a base.
Streak day #1820
Did their shading
Streaking day 1091: moving to acrylics. My operation also got pushed back by 2 weeks so I actually have more time to work on this now
Day 61 made the torso a bit more white and painted the leathre straps
Day 24 and 25
Day 1091, did a color test for the blue-yellow squad of serpent folk
Day 75, had time and better light, and did lots of metallic base coating!
Day 695, painting the back of a piece that will be glued on so this basically isn't noticeable anyways, but darkening it now helps me not slop as much once it's on there.
The left side of that sheet are some of my favorite blues!
Day 4: played around with some different colors. Realized the base I was using was too desaturated. I found a good base but now I can’t make up my mind if it’s better to start dark and go light, or the other way around.
Day 356: dangit I keep painting, taking the picture, getting ready to post, and then falling asleep. Anyway here's more Hametsu
Streak day #1821
Did the skin
Streaking day 1092: some building for a change, though I also worked on the other project
Day 62 nmm shield, getting better at nmm and the people at general were really helpful! which is nice
Day 76, had lots of time so I painted a lot, but had to clean up quick, so no pic!
Day 357: Cat samurai-ish guy all done!
Day 1092, did 2 coats of varnish on the gunslingers
Day 26: ongoing
Day 696, piece from yesterday is attached and started recieving paint on the other side. Also, trying to keep my hands from slopping over with my battered brushed as I do the symbols on his boots.
Day 5: rebase with more saturation. Learning, but it’s going slowly.
Day 77, got up early and watched a fantastic video on color theory because I have doubts about being able to pull out paints today…but now I’m all inspired and would rather paint than do holiday cooking! 😇 🦃
Day 27: finished the caster now on the wolf and the big one. The detail level is fantastic. Pic when i arrive at home or tomorrow. I need to do the base for him now
Day 63 couldnt get as good nmm as the shield but the other colours obcure them a litle bit, calling it done.
Streak day #1822
Did the wood and two of the robes
Painting without a lamp is way harder
Streaking day 1093: More building, nothing else
Day 1093, busy day getting things done for the holiday, managed to do the last coat of varnish on the gunslingers and added a coat to the eagle
Day 28 photo fron day 27 and the one from day 28 more goblins.
Day 358: shaving more gondorians
D6: more practice on bases, working transitions and contrast.
Day 697, last part to be added, I think, getting some coverage before parts get blocked off.
Streak day #1823
Got a bit side tracked today so only did one.
Day 78: found time to work on filling in a few more of their tchotchkes. And as an addendum to my hobby time yesterday, had a fun conversation with a cousin’s 13-year-old son who has taken up printing and painting! 🥰
Day 7: working with washes and trying to get the baseline shadows down.
Streaking day 1094: a bit of building again
Day 64 repainted a jackal
@pearl crow I think you went backwards 20 days, should be 1094.
Day 1094, finished the gunslingers, final pictures Today
Day 359: British army for Konflikt 47 came in, getting cracking on 'em
Oops
Day 698, added a sheen, and started picking out the barnacles. Still need to darken their middles and pick out details on the bracer before I can attach it.
Streak day #1824
The remaing 3 textured
Streaking day 1095: Built these, and some paint on my secret project. And cleaned my desk
Day 65 tried painting ghoulish skin, came out way too green though
Day 8: Pushed the volumes and got some really good contrast. About halfway through the first highlight. Then I'm going to go back and tidy up the transition zones.
Day 1095, started on the serpent folk, this is the first squad. Did some patching on one, started base coating the others
Day 79, back at my desk!
Day 360: more troops for the UK
Streak day #1825
Worked on the blood
Day 699, did some holiday shopping at the local markets, and started taking hornboys pants towards orange today.
Day 30 starting some spiders (primming+zenital)
Day 361: Li'l tanky armored car thing
Day 66 second try at ghoul skin, came out way better in my mind
Streaking day 1096: More secret project
I guess I need to start doing something visible for the advent event every day, not sure if they accept my mystery pics
Day 1096, more base coating and sanding and priming on number 4
Day 80, I wasn’t able to do much, but I washed the gold lettering on a couple guys!
Streak day #1826
Some metals
Day 700, All the parts are there!
Day 81, I will probably come back to paint more, but getting my post in for today! Painted purity seals.
Day 31 started some spiders
Streaking day 1097: building and secret stuff
Day 67 bone armor
Day 1097, more on my squad
Day 9 (I forgot to post) and Day 10: Worked on some of the more minute details and actually got some good practice in using different parts of the brush for good highlights. It was middling work and I probably will almost certainly have to go back and touch it up a bit later.
Streak day #1827
Metals on more boys
Day 32 base colors on spiders
Day 701, did a little work on his blue bits.
Cleaned up the Aquila and am really pleased with it. My lighting sucks so the whole thing like really dark but the midtone and first highlight actually has pretty good volume in the natural light. This is also the best I’ve painted in years…
Day 82, again, I’ll probably paint more, but getting my post in now. I’m going to do something a little different and paint up this ratling mini of the month from October. Today he got a quick prime.
Streaking day 1098: More building, also finished the secret project, then took final pics and realized I missed a spot. Maybe finish it tomorrow instead
As a best practice should we be reposting the pictures for the advent event, or forwarding the posts from the advent event to this channel?
Day 68 just watched some videos about painting
Day 11: added some metallics and experimented with some low-grade glow in the vents of the model’s backpack. It doesn’t look right yet but I think I know how to get the effect I’m looking for—first time I’ve done something like that!
Day 1098, more base coating
Day 363: More advent madness
Day 32 more advent
Day 702, anchor and bracer gem work.
Day 83,
curious about @wet anchor ‘s question, too,
dry brushing,
same as advent post 🖌️🖋️😊
Streak day #1828
Just a little on this
Streaking day 1099: back to working on a mini thats been on hold for a long time, and some secret project
D12: Pushed some more values and and happy to say I figured out the exhaust glow effect I was working on. Also locked in a color palette I really like and could replicate moving forward.
Day 69 painted a lizardman banner
Nice
Day 1099
Day 364: mini fell off the desk, had to glue it back on
Streak day #1829
Worked a little on this
Day 703, scabbard and boots work
Day 84, dealt with my first catastrophic spill.🤦🏻♀️😩
Streaking day 1100: finished sir pidge
Day 70 painted the rest of the banner and reconnected it
He is so stinking adorable
Day 1100, started on some bases
Day 365: One full year of streaking!
Day 35 more goblin finished
Day 704, loincloth and hair
Wait until you do it with inks and even the sink gets stained as you wash up 😄
D13. More volumes. Coming along nicely.
Streak day #1830
Some touch ups on some guys
Day 85: back to silver!
Streaking day 1101: started highlighting lampy darkson
Day 71 diffrent coloured shield
Day 1101, worked on the bases
Day 14: worked on an Infernus Marine with my 7 year old. He wanted to make someone from the Imperial Fist Chapter. Working with yellow was tough...still not confident we got it quite right, but I found several posts in here and on reddit helpful. Outside my comfort zone, that's for sure!
Day 366: more oni action
Streak day #1831
More touchups
Day 36: finished a warmachine model , base left
1102: starting to get a bit sick so minimum effort day, some basing work on this and glued an arm on slim
Day 15: worked some more highlights to smooth out transitions and added a white kneepad. Haven’t worked much with really light colors like white and yellow, so it took a bit. Generally happy with the result but I’ll bet I could push the white a little more.
Day 72 painted a lizardman guard
<@&266397596476506113> Day 1102, mounted my squad on bases
Day 705, put this lady on a base
Day 86: sitting down to paint some gold
Day 367: Got a spray booth and sprayed my first minis in it
Day 706, working on his buckles, realized I still haven't really shaded his coat.
Day 37: finished a mini
I love it being on one of the prior year sheets
Streak day #1832
Yet more touchups. Going to have to get in and do all the bases properly soon
Day 73 i painted a lost child of antiquity with ghoul skin since it looks a bit like a crypt flayer
Streaking day 1103: Continued on Lampy
Day 368: some british solidering
Nice, about keeping that streak, not sure if it counts but if you can’t read, then maybe a hobby podcast in the background?
You’re getting tips and inspiration, might count. And there is evidence to suggest you pick up on things when sleeping, just to a much lesser extent so…
Day 1103, added shading
Day 369: finished up the soldier
I actually bought a few books, trying that. I'm supposed to at least wale up the same day, next morning latest so I can do something probably. But we will see!
Advent event doesn't allow those though so thats gonna be cut short, but that isn't something to stress about at least
Neither is this streak I guess
but still gonn try if I can
Glad someone noticed 🙂
Day 707, trying to finish up bits on this lady before I go out and forget it all. Also, made a rudimentary plan for maybe continuing advent while travelling without paints.
D16: I got sucked into blending and made very little progress but time-traveled a bit. Stressful period so I think I was mostly just self-soothing. I wish I didn't feel guilty about how little progress I made given I was at the table for several hours. Still, it's done and gone; time to reattack tomorrow.
Streaking day 1104: just a bit of basing
Day 74 painting videos and picked a mini that i will paint next
@severe aspen it isn’t a race, some days hours go by and I don’t see any difference
Day 1104, started on highlights, broke off the same sword in a different place
Day 87, painting the wee books these guys evidently need to be badasses.
Best of wishes and good luck, can’t let that streak end damn it
Thanks for the encouragement. I get sucked in sometimes and then sort of feel like I've not made any progress at all...and that I'm just wasting time. I guess that's just part of it though. Anyway, the support is awesome--what I like most about this community.
D17. More struggles. I must be close to a breakthrough or something...or I'm just pushing myself too hard. Either way, I got one good leg and then backtracked on some of the highlights. I'm learning tons but I am not sure how to finish this thing.
Day 88, purity seals and more trinkets
You are so sticking with it even when it’s hard 💪
@pearl crow read before surgery and post, then you have 24 hours to read another sentence
@severe aspen you will finish it with one brush stroke at a time. And suddenly it will look good and you will be done
I will probably glue an arm before I leave at 5am in the morning
Streak day #1834
Started on cleaning up and basing the remaining ghosts
Streaking day 1105: skeletons
Day 75 just some base coats, i will try to get a better lighting since he has a candle
Good going, i really had my own breaktrough around 60 minis painted. One good part at a time will slowly make it great, keep it up!
Day 1105, added the base coat for metallics
Day 370:
I feel like progress is like a mountain where sometimes you are going straight up, and sometimes you have to climb down into valleys or go around boulders or crawl up a steep hill. Progress is not always immediately apparent and doesn't even feel like progress a lot of the time. But, coming in here and doing something every day to improve your painting will show up as progress at some time.
If they ask you to count backwards from 5, instead recite something hobby related like "always thin your paints".
Done, then you have 24 hours right from the moment you go under.
@severe aspen
The flaming skeleton on the left is where I was at 1 year ago, and this cat guy on the right is where I am today, almost 1 year later. Reflecting on it, there were plenty of days where I wasn't able to put in 100% effort because of life or work issues, or just my own motivation, and there were times that it felt like I was not making any progress or even backsliding and doing worse than before. But comparing these two pictures, I know I have progressed.
I still have a long way to go to become a good artist, but I can see improvements. My brush control now is much better than before and the strokes are much more purposeful. The colors on the cat pop more despite there being less of them, even though I'm using almost all the exact same paints. I can see where my shading and understanding of light on the cat is better at the darker patches of his arms and face, and even the clumsy blacklining I've done has helped define the model much more. Perhaps teh biggest thing is that it took me around 6 or 7 hours of painting to get the flaming skeleton to that level of quality, where it only took about 2 to get the cat looking like that. So if nothing else, thanks to coming in here and doing some kind of paint work every day, I'm now able to paint faster and cleaner than I did a year ago.
I say all this to say, don't get frustrated about your progress from yesterday to today. Just keep at it. Take a look back a month or a year later and you will see how far you have come.
D18. A bit of progress. I was in a groove before and now it's like I can't remember how to do what I was doing just a few days ago. Still, I'm working through the friction. Again, I really appreciate everyone's continued support. Y'all are amazing!
That's a great comparison shot and you've got some great skill, even though you're being modest in your post. Thanks for sharing this. I really appreciate it.
TBH, I'm just mentally and emotionally smoked--we're in the midst of an international move and I'm trying to recalibrate for painting the hotel with half the paints I had available to me when I started the project. At least part of the issue is having to relearn the media as I'm working with different lights, spaces, energy, etc.
Still, I know I'm improving. I am almost back to a total color match and my contrast/highlights are much stronger compared to how I was painting just a couple years ago.
I think I just need to paint less, ironically. I've been self-soothing from the hectic days by painting the same spots over and over...I barely even get a sense that I'm doing it...hopefully by doing less I can gain some separation from it. I think I'm on the up-swing though...I halved the stress looping today, and tomorrow I'm going to try and get it back down to my normal interval.
Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement. It means a lot.
makes total sense. sometimes the backsliding is frustrating too, but it's helping me work out some aspects of this project that I think will pay dividends later
Streak day #1835
Some more on setting these up. I seem to have lost 2 of them which is concerning
Day 76 highlights
Streaking day 1106: added some osl stuff on the ground, starting to look like something now
Day 89, painting weapons
Day 371: more Hametsu work
Day 1106, a little more progress. Just 15 minutes a day over a year adds up
Day 41: more warmachine
This… This is what I live for. This is what I love seeing. This helps me keep going and motivates others. If we had post of the year awards I would put this forward.
D19. I painted, but ugh. I'm in the pit of despair right now. Thinking of your guys' advice...trying to just appreciate being where I am, even if it's frustrating.
Day 710, did some lore writing on vacation
Day 77 a haul of loot, one for my birthday tomorrow and The rest for christmas🎉
Streak day #1836
Worked on some more basing. Found the missing 2, forgot I used some extra primer on them.
Streaking day 1107: just a bit of basing stuff
Day 90, power sword glazing
Day 372: At last the cat ninja is complete! Pretty happy with how this guy turned out. One of his tiny resin legs snapped off earlier in the year (you can still see him whole in the red circled picture) so I started crafting a smoke bomb kind of effect for him to be walking out of. The first iteration just looked like a weird tree trunk when I was done painting it, so I went back and added some more blobs to it to make it more smoke like. Think it turned out pretty ok in the end!
Day 1107, more highlights. While changing minis my sleeve caught in a sword and broke it off (a different one this time). I haven’t found it yet. So one may have a sword in one hand and a knife in the other
Thanks so much for saying that! I'm glad it could help.
Hey man replying to this post and the one above, I hear you about being in the pit of despair. I don't know exactly what you're going through but I've despaired quite a bit too. The middle of a move is incredibly stressful, an international one even moreso. We as painters are often our own worst critic but take a moment and give yourself permission to not have to put in 100% right now. If it helps at all remember that you can stop a piece any time. You don't need to complete it, especially if you're not feeling joy from painting it anymore. In the future you can come back and finish it up when your perspective has changed a bit, or you can strip the paint off completely and start anew, or you can leave it sitting in a box forever.
Day 373: Last Hametsu guy, the fish mage is taking form
You got this. I too find myself (more often then I’d like) in a similar emotional state, where I am frustrated and annoyed with where I am vs where I want to be. Just keep painting, and eventually something will work, and you’ll realise you’re getting better. Also learn to be happy with small wins.
First photo was my first attempt at NMM, with it only looking like that because I was lucky enough to get guidance basically every step from a great mini painter who provided photos of where the highlights should go and mock ups.
The second is a WIP from today of my second attempt. Is it perfect? Dear lord no. And are there are many janky highlights on it? Yes. But small victories such as semi-correct placement of highlights on some areas, selecting highlights with no reference or external guidance (e.g no mock up or using examples on internet), slightly improved blends help keep me going. If I was judging it purely off a “how good is it” it’s probably pretty low, but if I judge it based on improvements then it scores way higher. You’ll get there eventually, even if you don’t think you will!!!
D20. At least my streak continues. I'm so tempted to just strip this mini and start fresh. I'm exhausted guys. This move's really stressful and I'm just barely keeping it together...
I really appreciate your encouragement and support. I always struggle to get beyond 21 day streak and that's the only reason I'm still getting after it. I want to know I can do it. I see you guys with triple+ digits in your streak counters and I'm just like...dude, I wanna do that!
I know I'm not at 100% right now (though I'm well-supported and not in any danger or anything). I'm just super frustrated.
It took me many years before I actually enjoyed painting. I started doing as a vehicle for playing games, I didn't hate it but it never gave me a lot of joy.
I feel like passing a threshold of my skill catching up to my expectation is what really cracked it for me and allowed me to start painting for enjoyment.
Remember you can always put a mini down if you're not feeling it.
This is super reassuring and I appreciate you writing and sharing. That's huge progress man and I'm glad you're still at it. We go stronger together and I can say it helps turning to this community as I struggle through the doldrums of my own progress right now.
I know. I don't mean to go overboard. I just hit similar spots throughout and know that I'm approaching a similar one now...I'll get to like 75% completion and then overdo something, obsess, strip, start over.
Anyway, I just wanna say I appreciate you all. I don't mean to post in all caps and then clap back with repostes to your guys' collective support.
Thanks for the helping hands
This might seem counter intuitive but the stripping of the models might add to your feeling of exhaustion. Try moving to something quite different and try some different techniques.
If you think about it stripping the same models over and over will feel like making no progress. If you keep them, even if they feel like failures it's always something you can go back to and look at later to appreciate your progress
That's a very fair point. I had considered the neurotic element of never finishing being born of the desire to not have to confront my ability at the time of finishing. However, I had not really considered how that would be contributing to my not feeling like I was making any progress in the first place, which is a very fair and good point.
You're basically robbing yourself of the satifaction of putting something aside and being finished. Even if you're ultimately not happy with the finish, it is in fact finished, and that gives you a little boost.
Also consider the mini to mini improvements will be minor so you gain so little from a strip right now. If you com back in a year or two and really want to upgrade a centrepiece mini then go for it.
91, gotta get this banner based
One thing I’ve done when I’ve felt frustration at a perceived lack of progress in something is tell myself I’m working on the “before picture.” Like, in a year, say, I’ll be able to point to what I’m doing now to show, that’s where I was! And this is what I learned, etc. And it’s a necessary stage, because we learn more from the struggles.
But also, you’re allowed to feel what you need to feel and be where you need to be, don’t judge yourself if this doesn’t look like some preconceived idea if what things “should” be like. There’s so much to be said for showing up consistently when it’s hard.
Can you develop what its happening to you a bit? I ask to give you more focused advise. When i feel in a mood of faillure, I remember that faillures teach us more than succeses and try to understand what Im doing wrong. If you dont find it stop the piece you are doing and start sth easygoing to build momentum and then if you build enough try again where you got stuck. As an example i have recently finish two minis i left almost 10 years that id achieve enought courage to try.
Streak day #1837
Finished up the stone tiles
Streaking day 1108: Started highlighting Flay, Bearer of Knowledge
Day 78 flesh and details
@severe aspen The best advice I ever recieved is "Don't strip" Leave that model to show your progress. I have posted a model I did in my first year of paining, 2019. As you can see the eyes are a mess, there is basically no highlighting, no blacklining, it was very basic. The Jersey Minotaur I did this year, 2025. I have learned about highlighting, shading, blacklining, I am getting better at eyes but they are still my biggest issue. I keep the old ones to remind myself that I am making progress. The reall contest is only with myself. Some days I can paint a couple of hours; other days I am lucky to do 15 minutes. The point of this streak is to do at least the minimum for you. Is it only a one brush stroke? That is OK, you did it. Painting for me is when I get to do something for myself. I am not cooking, cleaning, shopping, packing, fixing, paying bills, going to appointments, working, etc. Just a few moments of Zen, just for me.
Day 1108, worked on the wood floor on the base, started black lining
Forgot to post last night, but day 712 today, did a little priming, and also did some visiting of a real art gallery/museum and paid attention to all the work on fleshtones classicists did
Both comments make tons of sense. Thanks for being encouraging. I appreciate you.
That's a really good reframe. I appreciate that! I struggle with framing a lot so that is actually really helpful
I really appreciate your willingness to help. Mostly I'm having trouble with volumetric highlights. It's a weak point of mine, but because I tend to overblend the transitions so it ends up washing out the contrast. Then as I go back to "touch up" spots, I get sucked into reapplying different layers and often unintentionally wetblend it into a big mess. I'll keep sprinkling in a bit of this and a bit of that until the model has just so many layers, and then I convince myself to strip the paint so I can see the features of the model underneath.
I'm in a weird transition WRT my skill. I can paint well enough to get some good layers and transitions, and even some low-tier gradients. So I'm trying to push myself with sharper transitions and better lighting. I've been practicing it for several months, on and off, but I'm really struggling now because I'm basically already fried when I sit down to paint. Living in a hotel while we're making this move happen means my chi is off as well as my confidence in this particular skill.
This is super helpful, thanks. I tend to be a bit neurotic when it comes to systems and practice. I am really trying to build a habit for myself where I reflect on wabi-sabi and just try to let things be. Most of my anxiety loops in this hobby stem from the inherent imperfection of doing a thing...it has been really inspiring being in this community; I just struggle with perfectionism, especially when it's something like this that I feel like I should be able to control. I know that's a whole can of worms--I appreciate your and everyone's collective support and feedback.
D21. I made it back to 3 weeks, which is the longest streak I've had in years. The weather broke today too.
I went back in to re-establish some of the base color to reset the clock just enough so I wouldn't fixate on my mistakes as I worked to finish the model, aaaaaaaand theeeeeeeeeeeeen my BLACK PAINT EXPLODED ALL OVER THE WHITE WALLS OF MY HOTEL ROOM.
After the initial shock of witnessing this massive and potentially very expensive mistake, I turned to and got it all cleaned up. In the final bits of cleaning, I checked out my model...this model that I've been obsessing over as I've been projecting all this stress and anxiety from the move into this sacred hobby space...the model was the ONLY thing on the table that was not touched by a single drop of paint. I started cracking up. Fun, returned.
The Emperor saves...
I just wanted to take another opportunity to thank you all for your support and encouragement. For as digitally connected as we all are these days, it seems hard to find folks willing to engage in a personal connection. I try to pay it forward; sometimes it's nice to be on the receiving end though. I'm humbled by your collective grace.
Omg, that paint spill was so wild to read! 😱🤪 I’m glad you were able to clean it up and find some humor in it.
If you appreciate reframes, here’s a fun one: imagine an old-school Mario video game. You finally master all the jumps in one level and make it to the next, where you struggle for a while mastering the idiosyncrasies of the new level. The thing is, the struggle itself arrives BECAUSE you ALREADY leveled up!
It also may not be fair to expect yourself to master the new level at your normal rate when your life is so far out of its norm and your emotions are stretched. It’s like finally arriving at Bowser’s castle level expecting yourself to master it while one hand is tied behind your back. I mean, it’s great to keep trying and learning while you figure out the hand-tying-situation, but what you’re learning in the meantime will take longer to become apparent. Doesn’t mean you’re not working on the next level up, though.
Be kind to yourself, basically. 🧡 I know, I expect myself to be the Best That Ever Was at everything, but it’s not really fair to me.
Streak day #1838
Carved out details on all the stones
Streaking day 1109: Spot Summons a Demon
Day 92, doing some clean up
I’m dying it’s so cute. What are these adorable minis?
Moonstone! Minis are indeed awesome, and the game is good too. Would recommend
Oh, I have heard of it! Adding a bookmark so I don’t forget again. Is it a campaign-style game? Or can you play is complete game in a single sitting? (Is there a name for that?)
It's not a board game, it's a skirmish wargame, tape measures and all that. 3-6 minis per side so very small compared to most wargames
Has a campaign mode but the games are (mostly) 1v1
Ah, that makes sense now that I read a bit. Thanks!
Day 79 more birthday gifts, building, priming and i also got this neat squig birthday card
Day 374: More fish guy, now with 25% more blacklining
Day 1109, getting ready for a trip, packing some minis to prep. Started sanding Santa Claus
This is such a great analogy and also piece of encouragement. Thank you so much for posting it...it made me smile. 🙂
BE CAREFUL OF YOUR BLACK PAINT WHILE TRAVELING!
Day 22: Reworking some highlights. Put myself on a timer and that helped a lot. Also spent some time journaling all the great advice y'all gave me. Thanks a thousand times over.
Still laughing about the paint explosion from yesterday...if you guys could've seen my wife's face when she walked out and saw me trying to clean it all up...was like something out of a Mr. Bean episode.
Days 713 and 714, continuing primes!
Streak day #1839
Texture paste on the bases
Day 93, taking a break from that banner to varnish some other dudes in the unit
Day 375: 98% done with the fish guy
Streaking day 1110: More work on Flay, and some skeleton building
Day 80 after trial and error on the colour schemes i decided to go with this
Hey everyone! 👋
I’m new here and this is literally my first time ever painting a miniature 😅
I just finished my first project (Sylvanas) and I’d love some beginner tips or tricks.
What should I focus on improving first — shading, highlights, thinning paints, or brush control?
Any feedback is welcome. Thanks, happy to be here!
Day 1110, on the road today, managed to do a little sanding on this fighter
@celest lotus looking pretty good for a first mini, very detailed model. Your brush control is clearly good, clean work. I noticed a line on the back of the cape that needs filling and sanding. After that work on highlights. This is a very impressive model
Permission to PM?
Can I ask what the pictures and words are in the background of some folks’ photos?
Day 46: battletech ongoing
@severe aspen its for an event of daily streak of this server usually have on december as count down to Christmas.
Looks amazing for a first miniature! You can ask for feedback on #general-miniatures
Thanks a lot for the feedback!
I really appreciate it.
I’ll fix the line on the cape and work on improving my highlights.
If you have any tips or maybe a video recommendation for doing good highlights, I’d be super grateful. Still learning:)
Ofc
Thank you mate 🤠
Day 23: I got 5 mins in today before my attention was redirected, but it was still 5 mins!
Day 94, back to these bros, basing and banner
Day 1111, some sanding
Streaking day 1111: Finished Flay and built some skeletons
Day 81 skin and metallics
Streak day #1840
Some plants on the bases. I hope these hold up properly when primed
day 2. sketching values
@celest lotus there are quite few good videos. I like Squidmars earlier videos, then there is Ninjon, Vince Ventrulla(sp?), Sam Lenz, the Mini Witch, and so many more
And Rhonda Bender
Day 376: wrapped up the last of my Hametsu army
Streaking day 1112: possibly my last day depending on how today goes! Quickly glued and gap filled skeletons before heading to the hospital very early in the morning. I have my book with me so will hopefully continue the streak with some art book reading
but its not clear if I'll get my stuff until Thursday. Wish me luck!
D24. Got 15 min before having to knock out for the night. Early flight tomorrow.
@pearl crow good luck 🍀, I hope all goes well
Day 1112, sanded some dwarves
Day 82 bit of a bad day, but painting cheered up a litle, also got this hearthkin warrior done.
Streak day #1841
Primed the last of the ghosts for AoW
Good luck, hope it all goes well
Day3: more layers
Day 95, more banner action
This thing is really pushing me! I haven’t done anything like it yet.
Day 377: It helps to clean your workspace every once in a while! Found and attached the missing face piece for Ashoka, and found a lunar base I thought I'd lost for this robot guy, and did some gluing
Wishing you the best of luck!
Streak day #1842
Put some dirtyness on this guy
Streaking day 1113: it continues
@pearl crow good to see you continue your streak, hopefully everything went well. Good for you for hanging in there
Day 1113, I think, I don’t have my spreadsheet with me. Anyway I filled some gaps
Day 83 built and reposed a Arch-revenant
Day 96, more banner (bit out of focus oops)
Day 4: wasnt liking the highlight placement so ive redone it. Still not 100% happy but oh well
Day 378: feeling a bit wiped out from work so I'm taking it easy today with some bases
Day 49 finished a mini.
Day 25: spent all day traveling and catching up with friends and family, so 15 min was what I had, but I kept the streak alive!
Streak day #1843
Made them dirty
Day 1114? Did some gap filling and sanding
Day 84 primed the arch revenant, though The primer came out too wet. Do yall have any tips on priming with an airbrush?
Streaking day 1114: More vince
Day 5. Nearly there.
Day 379: Ok, getting to work on my last model for AOW
Day 97, more banner again
Day 26. I’m moving back into the space of being happy with my work. I’m setting a goal to finish this by the end of the week so I can move on to a new project.
Streaking day 1115: More Vince, maybe even the book later today. Also got a visit from the hospital physical therapist who came to talk about his warhammer projects
Day 98, and I don’t really have time today, so got up early to get a base coat on the banner’s purity seal ribbons. Streak continues!
Streak day #1845
2 more
Day 1115?, travel day, managed to sand for a few minutes
Day 85 zenithal highlight
Day6: Went into the city and bought a box of tyranids. Assembled ready for final cleanup and extra base bits.
Day 380: more ghoul king, more paint
Streak day #1846
Getting in earlier today. A day behind where I wanted to be with these but there's the last of the shading
D27. More work on the current project. I'm confident I'll get to where I need to be by the end of Sunday. I have a good amount of work to do but it's coming along nicely.
Streaking day 1116: moved on to the physical book I bought for this purpose! Seems pretty interesting even if I didn't get too far yet
@pearl crow What book is that? Looks cool. Also I think today should be day 1116. I got home last night, and I just checked my spreadsheet. I thought you might want to know.
Yeah i thought I might be wrong and ill retroactively correct mine when I have my sheet 😅 but that's not for another 2-3 days when I'm home
The book is "The art of..." series, Seyni N'Diaye
Day 86 skin and basecoats
Day 28: I’m really challenging myself to push the contrast. I’m reaching the limit of my skill for glare and reflective surfaces, but I’m really happy with several parts of this model and I think in the end it’ll really come together.
Happy for any feedback anyone has!
Day 52: finished my battletech minis
Day7: bases and some cleanup done
Day 1116, home with my files again, some filing, gap filling and a good scrubbing
Day 99 (oh wow!) and finally sitting down to work on the banner some more. It’s almost there!
Day 381: trying green hair instead because red hair and red cape seemed a bit meh. But the green is also a bit meh.
btw if anyone has suggestions for what to do with his hair I would appreciate it. Purple skin, orangy-brown coat with red cape
You’re on the right track with cool colors I think! Try a good teal and add some red to the umber coat. The teal/blue will be a nice offset to the warmth of the coat and cape.
Thinking a color scheme like an inversion of Blanca from Street Fighter.
Just my 2 pennies
Day 720, a little base painting
Streak day #1847
Texture. Hopefully i can blaze through the others tomorrow
It’s a busy day, so I’m snagging a few minutes now to paint glowy eyes and lock in day 100! 🎉🥳

Day8: finished this stormcast fella
Day 1117, i did some cleanup and black lining
Day 382: On the road, just did some basing

Day 31+22 painting my warmachine
Day 721, working on a Christmas gift
Streak day #1848
Still behind but did get most of the cleaning done that I needed to do before Christmas so that's good.

Day 101! Doing some touchups before I varnish and finish this squad
Day 88 built the rest of the skinks and watched zumikito
Day9: Primed and underpainted one of my new tyrannids

Streaking day 1119: bit by bit
Day 384: adding some shadows and highlights to the ghoul king
Day 89 primed the skinks, repainted an old jackal and got a anacrarock spider from a close friend for a christmas gift. since i am posting after Midnight, Happy christmas everyone!
Day 31: NMM-like technique is starting to make more sense to me, which is also helping with volumetric highlighting. I'm sure I have so much left to learn but this has been a really great breakthrough! I never realized how much you can really push the volumes/contrast on these!
Day10: messy basecoats, trying to figure out palette as i go.
Day 1119, cleanup and black lining about ready for varnish, still haven’t found the broken sword
Streak day #1850
Last 4 textured
Day 103, base coating Crowe’s armor and really wishing we’d subassemblied this cloak 😩
Crowe participated in a massive Imperium vs Everyone Else yesterday and while he defeated the Chaos Demons, unfortunately the Xenos overwhelmed the forces of the Emporer in the end.
Maybe he just needed his armor fully painted. 🤷🏻♀️
I think you may have forgotten something I need more coffee.
Wrong channel.. and I need more coffee and or sleep
Thanks for looking out for me!
Streaking day 1120: picking up the pace a bit. But only a bit
Day 90 built a litle bit of the aracharok spider
Day 1120, did some prep work on some kobolds
Day11: Trusting the process.
Day 385: More cape for the king
Day 32: Working different panels tonight. Feels like I'm making good progress. Not done with it but not minding that either.
I posted a bunch of updates with no content in them because I wanted to keep it a secret project until christmas, now the recipient got it so I'll post it here if anyone is interested. This isn't my today's update, just an extra!
11220?
Idk, I think that number might be wrong…
Could be the fact it’s a 30 year streak lmao.
Day 25: Can I just continue my streak from the holiday event? Lol If not, rip.
Built and primed a lieutenant and ballistus dread from the strike force box
Also white primer a toothbrush helmet for a bgv
Yeah, I can’t see why not.
yeah continuing from the advent event was what many of us here did, including me
Day 724, doing a few touchups here and there, and picking a few new projects to start on tonight because I'm too wired from working on stocking packing and wrapping to be able to sleep right now. Also, drew a book cover (present didn't arrive and not entirely sure it even shipped... so I doodled up a cover and put the first couple lines of the preface on the back side so they'll have something to open 😄 )
Streak day #1851
Just a Christmas day quicky
Day 104, my kids aren’t little, so no more 6am Christmas wake-ups. Getting a wee bit of paint on the bandolier(?) and a pic before the holiday gets away from me! Merry all the things to everyone celebrating today.
@silent ether oops! 1120. I will fix it on my laptop
Streaking day 1121: More skeleton
Day 91 more building
Day 1121, more filling on the kobolds
Day 386: That wizard came from the moon!
I’m so tempted to start a streak but I know that it won’t last more than a month or so almost so cause I’m too damn busy.
Day 25: Jumping over from the advent so, hobby streak day 25 for me.
Working on assembling the first model from the Snarlpack Cav.
Day12: started highlights on the purple
Day 25 continuing from the advent, this time I'm trying a red leather belt.
Late post but Day 33: Just keeping the streak alive.
Day 725, did a little work on her tunic
Day 31+25 primming
Day 26~

Ah screw it, let’s start one. Day 26. Built this Ultramarine hero from blind box.
Streak day #1852
Did the rest of the blood basing on the other 11
Day 92 finally got it wholly built
Just watching a painting guide or maybe assembling a mini will keep the streak active tho
Streaking day 1122: More skeleton
Day 387: Getting close to the end with Ushoran
Hey welcome to all the new folk joining from the advent streaking!
Day 105, just a little gold detailing and silver touch-ups.
Day 1122, had the sweats all night, sick today, I managed to start some brush priming on a kobold
Oh, that’s a golden idea
Thanks
Day13: more purple highlights and made the venom a bit more fluorescent. Still not sold on this pallete ive chosen, but hopefully that changes when im done
Day #26: 2 Woofs assembled.
Day 26: glued the sword/scabbard
Day 34: Went for speed and coverage; trying to finish this guy up because I'm starting to hyper-fixate a bit. The light on his leg/hip isn't right though.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Day 27: Priming. Lots of priming…
But hey, new airbrush!!!
Day 31+27: painting in the night these days
Day 726, started on this guy!
Streak day #1853
Skin on half of them
Day 27: knocked out 5 sternguard and a lieutenant today, first game of Warhammer is later today, this is what I'm being up against Necrons!
Streaking day 1123: paint! Orange highlights
@severe aspen Try putting it under a bright light at the angle you want the sun hitting it, and take picutures from several angles. Look at the pictures close in, really zoom in there. You should be able to determine where you need to add highlights, and shade
D35: Left leg is mostly done (less the kneepad). Gonna hit the back panels and then move on to the right side. I think I need to experiment a bit with the right shoulder glare...it might be too high where it is right now.
That was helpful! Thanks!
@severe aspen I find exaggerating the highlights and low lights actually looks more realistic for a sunny day.
@severe aspen my rule of thumb is to exaggerate them about 5 times more than I think I should, also look at them under different lighting conditions. If you are playing in a room with average lighting the contrast fades. I work under bright lights then take them to another room and find the highlights just disappear
Day 1123, feeling better, started priming
This is really helpful—having something quantifiable to consider. I tend to paint under bright lights too and then my photos are often in darker rooms or with more neutral light. But I’ve never done NMM before and so I’m learning a lot just by doing.
For example, I like how his left ankle turned out but that was after spending heaps of time on the shoulder guards, which now seem sort of washed out in comparison.
I was surprised to find the whole model’s average midtone went lighter with this technique, or at least the way I’m learning/applying it.
I’m not very practiced with volumetric highlights either so it’s been a bit touch and go, but I’m making real progress over time and it’s getting me excited to actually finish the model so I can refine my practice.
I’m gonna try to NMM his shoulder trim and grenades too, which I honestly didn’t think I was ready for when I first started.
Do you have any areas you’d readdress on the model based on the photos I posted?
@severe aspen You need a lot more highlights, looks like you haven't had a chance to do any of the edges, or trim. You need more contrast. Lighter highlights, darker shades. Where you have the lightest highlights looks good, just remember edges catch the light, look around your home and look at how the edges of things catch the light, especially if they are metallic. I haven't done too much in the NMM because I think the effort should be spent on display models, not to be played with models, but that is my take. From what I have learned it is volumetric shading on steriods. Some has suggested priminin in black, then a gloss varnish, then the bright light and photo session to see where you really need to push things. You can also try taking a photo and use filters to make it gray scale, and see if you have enough contrast. It is a good technique to make sure you are confusing color with contrast.
Thanks for the feedback! This is helpful and gives me something to think about! I don’t mind the amount of work going into a “practice model” actually. I’m learning tons and reaching beyond my comfort/skill level in many ways.
I will play around with contrast/highlights and see if I can’t bring out the metallic vibe a bit more. I was worried it was too white a highlight and too many streaks, but your feedback is actually encouraging for leaning into that contrast even more.
Day 106, painting base coat on base
Day14: Didn’t have much time today. Managed to get a first layer of highlights on the ‘armour’ whilst fighting citadel satin glare.
Day 27: some red leather behind the shield. Going to glue that tomorrow.
I did that once, took the picture after glossy varnish, mini was going fine but then it exploded. So sad.
Day 27: Trying to close this guy out. Very close now.
Day 727, starting on this guy too. Probably going to put some metallics on his body.
Streak day #1854
Skin on the other half
Day 28: Taking a small break from minis and returning to my model kit roots. Working on a Tamiya 1/35 M14 Hellcat. First time shading or anything on a model kit. Going to clean up the shadows slightly with base colour and then do 1-2 lighter shadings. Overall happy with it so far.
Day 93 forgot to post but i traveled to my countrys capital and decided to buy more warhammer and paints
Day 31+28 finished a lot a Knight , 8 ninja painted with my son and finish the base of my heroquest's mage.
Day 1124, made new sword from a popsicle stick, changed a belt, general clean up
Streaking day 1124: almost finished building the rest of the skellies
Day 94 base coats on a infernus marine i got from a friend
Day15: no painting today, giving my brushes a much needed cleanse so i built and based lil dwarf dude
Day 107, work continues on Crowe
D36: Short session to keep the streak alive. Worked on the leg panels and trying to implement some of the feedback I received/what I saw in the NMM YT videos I watched.
Day 28, last minute decision to start gold nmm on his legs.
Day 28. Finished up the goat boy.
Day 29: Cleaned up shading. Might get a chance to do some lighter tones tonight but if not probably tomorrow.
Had time to do one lighter shade.
Day 1: Rip, forgot to post lol I did do hobby stuff, just forgot to post
Have a primed Redemptor
Day 728, starting to do some shadows on this lady. About the only part I like is the cloak color, but that's OK.
Streak day #1855
Did all the hair
Day 108, shading the underside of Crowe’s cloak
Streaking day 1125: finished skellies and started zeratul
Strong jealousy
Clean that keyboard damn it
Get some cotton tips
Day 95 finished the infernus mantis warrior
Day 1125, started varnishing my serpent folk Squad
Day 37: Another full day. Chipping away to keep the streak alive.
Day 29. Started a Tortle Cleric
Day 29: I didn't dislike the nmm on the leg.
Day 729, did some work on the body sheen of this guy
Day 109, it’s a long day, so got up early to spend a little more time with thus cloak’s shading
Streak day #1856
Aaaaaaaaagggh!
Utter madness. 👏. Assembly line painting is not a thing I can do.
Been working on them for #all-out-war-4-board-harder for the last 6 months. But all the basing needs to be done to submit them all before year end
I painted an infantry heavy Imperial guard army way back when. It broke my ability to do that ever again. One at a time is now my way forward.
I usually do 5-10 at once for armies. Can't handle the feeling of downing only 1 guy and knowing there's 89 left, I run out of steam
Like I have a shitload of chainrasps to do for this army. They're going to suck
Ha! Fair point. 🤪
That’s honestly the biggest reason I’ve dropped army games for skirmish games. My shiny syndrome sickness is strong indeed.
Yeah, they're a lot more appealing for that reason. Having a fully painted army does look excellent though
Streaking day 1126: some basing, painting a vespid and building zeratul
Day 1126, finished my Squad for Squad Along
Hey all I am back but my streak is broken. I had hoped to make it to the end of the year after getting revenge on the advent painting challenge. However, on vacation me and my entire family came down with the flu and I just didn't have the capabiltiy to keep up the streak.
Day 96 decided to start repainting this Slaughter bound, got started on the armor and skin
Day 30: More Tortle cleric work.
Day 30: working on the back of the nmm leg.
Day 38: Trying to close the loop with this NMM technique. I'm learning tons with each iteration but I have had to take a couple steps backward. I think it'll pay off in the long run...I hope anyway.
Day 2: Finished up my redemptor! Whoo!
Day 31:
Day 730, worked on Santa a bit, but the storm has shut down the airport and now taken out the power -- frankly, surprised it lasted this long.
Streaking day 1127: Zeratul is built
Streak day #1857
Did more work on all the bases but forgot to take a photo before running off to the movies tonight
Day 110, traveling and took a little time to watch a painting mindset video whilst organizing Daggerheart cards
Day 1127, started a color scheme for this kobold
Day 97 watched some painting videos, counted the amount of minis i painted in 2025, somewhere around 80 minis. Happy new year!
Hey folks just wanted to say I'm taking this opportunity to take a break from hobby streaking. Thank you all so much for being here and being supportive throughout the last year. A 387 day streak isn't even close to the longest streaks in here but it's one I can feel proud of.
Thanks to this group I have painted around 138 minis for this year, which is way, way more than I have ever painted before. I got to explore a lot of different techniques, and can clearly see the evolution of my painting skills between when I started and ended. I'll suggest to any painter on the discord or subreddit that they should come here and start a streak if they want to improve. I posted some pictures in the #the-mini-gallery of what I did during the streak if you want to take a look 🙂
#the-mini-gallery message
Day 31. Worked on the Tortle for about 20 minutes. Not a noticeable enough change for pics tonight.
Day 31: continued on the legs, but this time I didn't like it. Going to work on it again tomorrow.
Day 39: just keeping the streak alive.
Streak day #1858
Wew it's spooky in here
Day 731, working a bit more on some wings
Hope to see you jump back in at some point. Well done on making a full year excellent work
Day 32: Watched some Zumikito for inspiration and getting more familiar with NMM + blending. New Years Eve was last night for me and after some questionable beverage choices I was in no shape to paint today.
Day 111, built a little. I’m going to try a subassembly, I think.
Streaking day 1128: some base magnets and gap filling
Day 98: More painting videos, might be able to paint some forest goblins tomorrow
Day 1128, started base coating a kobold and a serpentfolk mage
Day 32: Just about done with the Tortle.
Day 32: glued the base
Day 40 (late entry): working some bounce lighting and value range.
Day 732, assembling some pieces.
Day 112, another busy day with family, I snuck in a video with Squidmar + Borja discussing mini painting this morning 🤓
Streak day #1859
Back on my bullshit with old minis. Cleaned up these 2 steel legion
Streaking day 1129: skellies on bases
Day 99 got one of the forest goblins done. 1 done 6 to go
Day 33: Just a bit of assembly today.
Day 33: a bit of dry brush on the base
Day 41. Had a big breakthrough today! No photos but will post some tomorrow.
Day 34: Aaaaaaand back to minis. This will be my third go at NMM. Need to do the blue. Probably a tomorrow job.
Not sure of the day , 1st post here so day 1?
Yeah, day 1. It’s basically just a place where you keep track of your streak.
Sorta like Duolingo
Day 733, started decorating his staff and attached it.
Day 113, building December’s mini of the month, a DeathWatch Disruptor
Streak day #1860
Few more.
I have a ton of these inquisitorial storm troopers. I want to see if I can make a press cast of the mask to be able to put masks on the open visor guys. Being in an Armageddon army they should have full respirators
Streaking day 1130: some final cleanup and snow on the bases
Day 100 goblin shaman
Day 34: Starting work on a Runesmith.
Day 1130, finished base coating the kobold
Day 34: improved soil and boots.
Day 2 , midnight manticore
Day 35: More NMM. Trusting the process. Practice and time… Practice and time…
Day 42: more progress trying to apply what I learned to other parts of the model. Finding my actual knowledge of light pavement is somewhat lacking…
Something I just thought of, but would the leg guard have a reddish bottom trim because of bounce-back light? Same question for the underside of the left arm.
For context, I’m going to base with a red, Martian soil, which is why I went with the magenta.
Appreciate any ideas y’all might have.
Day 35 (pt. 2): I lie, I had time to do some more.
Day 734, working on his stinger and face and eggthing
Gotta say that looks super cool. I love that hue of blue! What did you use? Is that the Two Thin Coats or AK?
Day 43: Painting with my son this morning. He's working on an Infernus Marine and I tried helping him build some bronze NMM for the flamer.
I dont think the red base will reflect red onto the blue armor unless its glowing like magma, it will contrast nicely to the blue mini i think. Also if you are trying to paint an ultramarine then its a bit bright unless its suppose to be metallic
Thanks for the feedback! When you say the red base won't reflect onto the blue armor, do you mean the underside of the left leg is also too strong? Or do you mean the bounce light won't travel to the left arm/hip guard because it's not radiating its own light?
It is supposed to be a bit more metallic. I have seen some different opinions on how reflective ceramite is but not going so much for absolute realism as trying to work volumes and the technique.
I guess im trying to say that if the base is something like rock it wont reflect red to the blue unless its a light source that glows. Cant give much advice on nmm though since im not good enough at it
Streaking day 1131: primer
Streak day #1861
Did a bunch of organising and cleaned up this officer
Makes sense, thanks!
Two thin coats marine blue as base, I’ll need to check the other two lighter ones.
@severe aspen Do you also want the colours for the gold and silver NMM?
Day 101 painted the rest of the face
@severe aspen TTC Marine blue, then AK Imperial Blue and AK Deep Blue. I think I might’ve also used a bit of calgar blue (Citadel)
Paints for the gold NMM and silver NMM
Isnt that manticore from tahlia vedra? The price tag is way too inflated
Yes it is im using it as Neferata of blood, sbgl
Day 114, I am happy to be back at home where my paints are…but I’m sick and was only up to watching a video: I caught Ninjon’s latest dissecting Elminiaturista’s OSL. Really good video. 👍🏻
Day 1131, finished base coating the serpent folk, did some shades on both
Day 35: More Runesmith work.
Day 35: improving the back of the leg.
Thanks for sending! I’m going to experiment with these once my current SM is done!
Got a second painting sesh in tonight. I think the techniques are clicking!
All good, awesome SM, can definitely see progress.
Thanks!
Day 36: Finished my mini, and my 2nd go at NMM.
Hope you find the colours useful btw
Dude, I’m here for it. Thanks! And your Stormcast looks dope!
Do you usually place light source at direct front? (I’m trying to challenge myself to alternate light sources for each new model)
Yeah, I’ve stuck to front since NMM is very much new to me and I want to keep it simple for now. I’ve done one other which was directly above and front on, this is more above + front to the left slightly. I find it best to stick to something comfortable whilst learning a new technique, that way you can focus on just that technique without having to try and balance other things. To each their own, that’s just my method. But definitely push yourself to do different light sources once you’ve gotten confident with light sources. I’m still getting there myself.
The highlight placement is where I most struggle so moving the light source has helped me break the rote of zenithal bias. But for what it’s worth, I think your method of controlling for light placement and focusing on the technique to gain confidence is very sensible.
I should probably do that myself tbh… it’s taken me forever and a day to actually figure out what I’m doing, mostly because I’m a chaos agent in my hobbying!
Love learning about other people’s process though! What inspired you to take the leap for NMM?
An odd burst determination and a commitment I made whilst consuming… Questionable beverages.
But I had been considering it for a while, I’ve been wanting to go from tabletop to display level. NMM seemed like the first step.
Since it’s light placement + highlights + blending which are all super vital skills for display painting.
Sweet man. Sounds like there’ll be more to your SC then. Looking forward to your next model!
Thanks. Idk what I’m doing next, past 2 months of mini painting have been purely intense learning and stuff. You can bet your life the next model will not have NMM.
I need a break
I’ll practice it a bit for you then
You do that for me. I’ll still do blending though. Even if it’s not on minis
Actually, random tip, get some plastic card for the sole reason of practicing blends. Cut it into 3x3cm squares. I bought about $6 AUD worth of it and cut it into 50 squares. They’re all black so I don’t need to bother with that step.
Day 62+5 priming minis for the start of the year. Painting some minis more but lack the base done.
Day 735, did some varnish coatings
@silent ether how did you determine where all the light was going to be
Where’d you buy it? Online? 3d printer? I’ve done this a bit with some extra bases I have.
Streak day #1862
Started cleaning some of the unopened minis
Streaking day 1132: basing stuff and some gap filling on dwarves
Just my hobby shop. They sell it for people rather than build stuff like train dioramas.
Black primer and photos. I also dry brushed which helped make some bounce highlights (or whatever they’re called). Also help from other painters.
Day 3 , more feathers
Day 102 web and extra limbs done
Day 115, still sick and not up to much, but I really wanted to touch a real model and not watch a video about it! Spent a short time doing some gold details and washing the text areas on the armor.
And now, back to bed
Day 1132, Worked on a base for the serpent folk, glued the kobold to a base, started highlighting both
Day 36: I painted so many layers on the scale armor, the holes got filled up. I'm striping all paint on these parts to start again.
Day 37: Watched some NMM videos today, don’t have time to paint cause it’s my Dads birthday and am spending time with him, not being a little garage gremlin lol.
Day 3.5,
Day 36: Worked on cape and leather.
Day 44: Light source is 45 degrees over left shoulder. I think most highlights are in the right spot but if you see something glaring please lemme know!
Also for whatever reason had a ton of moisture on the palette—was thinking of submitting my left thumb for points? Thoughts?
Day22 late post, finished my palette test ravener for a killteam. pretty happy with final result.
Day 736, misplaced my phone, so no photo tonight, but did a little work on the skin of a mechanic.
Streak day #1863
Cleaned up some basic dudes
Day 4 neferata of blood base done
Streaking day 1133: Basing stuff continues
Day 103 built and primed 2 Heroes
4.5 day
Day 116, more wee details and such. Testing the holder from Game Envy… jury is out, but really, I’m just finding that funtak doesn’t stick as well as I’d like.
Day 37: another day of sad unclogging. Realized I don't have any tool sharp enough to clean the holes, so I guess I'll need to build one
Day 37: More Runesmith.
I'm very close to rage filling all stupid holes and then painting dots over it. Might even look better.
Maybe filling all holes with black, then applying transparent glazes of grey over it.
@tidal willow That sounds like a good idea
Day 1133, glued the serpent folk to a base, worked on highlighting the kobold and some black lining, broke the chain and axe off the serpent folk, will be gluing it tomorrow, if I can find it.
Day23. Primed a cursed city mini and started figuring out light placement
Day 45: making progress on the assault intercesor and as I’m going, it’s looking light there might be another light in the bottom left? A flare or something maybe? Dunno…emergent storytelling.
Day 38: got out mini photo setup, taking photos tomorrow.
Day 737, here's the aforementioned mechanic, working on her hair and pants today.
Day 5 , slowly. Trying to recreate the left, mines on the right
Streak day #1864
More dudes
Streaking day 1134: still basing
Day 104 started working on the lord of plagues
Day 117, tried my hand at painting a little liquid-filled glass bottle 🤷🏻♀️
Day 1134, started the gluing process. I found the pieces, it broke into 3 parts
Day 38: looks like my transparent paint was not transparent enough, nothing of the black is showing through. I'll go to other parts of the mini and get back here later, maybe I'll have a better solution in the meantime.
Day 38: finished except for the base.
Day 738, sorting and putting away the finished products, moving rows in my spreadsheets of minis, and pulling more things to paint and scrubbing them up
Day 46: L Shoulder pauldron done and while it took a minute to figure out the light placement I’m pretty pumped about how it turned out!
Day 39: Put the mini on the set up… Didn’t even have time to take a photo 😭
Maybe tomorrow
Streak day #1865
Got some stuff organised for the server and did 2 more today
Day 118, cleaning my wet palette and shading Crowe’s helmet
Day 39: Runesmith finished. Next Dwarf primed.
Streaking day 1135: Some gap filling and base magnets, along with planning and organizing for aow
Day 105 more skin
Day 1135, glued the scythe to the mini
Day 40: Took some photos, primed and prepped minis.
10/10 professional photo setup of if I say so myself.
Day 39: I think I solved it! I highlighted only the raised parts, now it's looking good. Going to take forever to paint the rest though.
Day 62+9 finished a mini plus ongoing in my warmachine warband
Day 47: bit more progress but I pushed it too hard today and now I’m stuck again on the left forearm guard…
(Forgot to upload picture)
Day 739, doing tasks I'd been avoiding, mainly pinning and such already painted models that have broken several times and the superglue just ain't doin' it anymore. One took a pin, one didn't (funky shoulder wing connection), and one got the glue cleaned off and the hole widened for the socket insert (white metal).
Streak day #1866
Another 2
Streaking day 1136: the last magnets
Day 106 not much time for painting so just some thinking about the bloated skin
Day 119, DH is using Crowe right now to defeat some heresy, so I’m painting this dreadnaught today. The first primer I tried when I first started was leadbelcher, but I struggled with it and needed to build some priming skills with non-metallic primer. I tried the leadbelcher again and got much better results , I’m happy to say, because that’ll save me lots of time! Today I just started some shading on the legs.
Day 1136? I drew 2 maps for tonight’s game, sanded a base
Day 41: Started this guy who I’m painting for a competition. Wish me luck.
Day 40: glued the sword for the second time. Also. Paint had flaked so new white printer was applied.
Day 40: Tortle finished.
Day 48: More work on the pauldron and wrist guard. Think I have them where I want them.
Day 740, working on his little friend back here mostly.
Streak day #1867
Last 2 of the squad.
Day 120, light shading on Crowe’s cloak.
Streaking day 1137: primer
My streak broke, not a single thought about painting crossed my mind. I just played baldurs gate 3 for 5 hours and watched 2 movies w friends
Day 1137, still not feeling good, primed the glue patch on the scythe chain and base
Screwed up the eyes
Day 42: Lenses
Day 41: almost finished with an Orc Standard that has sat half done for a few months.
Day 41: repainted the sword
Day 49: more blending. I am learning!
Day 741, some home DIY that ripped up my hands, and working on this fella. Still need to decide what to do with his antennae.
Streak day #1868
Started on the next squad
Streaking day 1138: started with zenithals
Back to the beginning.
Day 1: painted some pus on the skin. Feeling a bit burnt out, but i think some light kitbashing will do the trick
Day 42: working on finishing Eyes of the Nine. They’ve been partially done for far too long
Day 43: Started the first of four edge highlights. Send help please.
Day 1138, made some progress on serpent folk
@silent ether just use the edge of a brush and then fix the mess ups afterwards
Can’t for the first 2 of them.
Last two I can though
It’s more just how mind numbingly slow and tedious it is
Day 121, working on Crowe’s banner
Day 42: added highlights to this side of the silver armor.
I mean, BG3 is pretty addictive, that could happen to anyone! Sounds like a rad day.
Day 50! Really minor progress. I was in poor light too. Not really worth a photo tbh—I can barely tell a difference. Still, 50’s 50!
@severe aspen the important thing is you did something, no matter how much it changes things. Some days are great and some days things don’t go as well. I have broken a few minis and had to stop to glue them
Haha I fat fingered the meme response…I was trying to use that meme though because which emoji? 🔥 for solidarity or ☠️for you breaking your minis?
In all seriousness though @placid crystal thanks for the encouragement. I appreciate it—y’all always swooping me up and I’m thankful for this community!
Day 742, working on his shield a bit
Streak day #1869
Some horrible mould damage on these ones.
Make sure you mix up what you're doing to keep it fresh
Day 2 a simple conversion with stirland mud on the armor as texture. Thinking about converting a lumineth spearhead as diffrent kinds of undead
Streaking day 1139: finished zenithals
Day 43: started an Orc
Day 1139, working on collages for the last 2 years
Day 122, more banner work
Day 43: matt varnishing before glueing the hands
Day 44: Managed to fix a tiny bit of the edge highlights before my paint mixer exploded… Not. Very. Happy.
The mini wasn’t harmed thankfully
Wiped out a few of my paints though.
Day 51: better highlights and blends today.
Day 743, doing some more work on this guy; seeing if I can get the limbs to a place I like and the antennae have color now!
Streak day #1870
More storm troopin
Streaking day 1140: started with colors a bit
Day 3: wasnt able to build anything but i instead painted a cloak
Day 62+13: finished some minis starting more
Day 123, back to this dreadnaught
Day 1140, did my collage for 2025
Day 45: Did a quick order for some stuff I needed. Torn between Artis Opus or Winsor & Newton…
Day 44: this side of the armor was kinda flat, I added some texture.
Day 52: minor progress. Working through light placement. Slow going.
Day 744, details on presents mostly. Teddy bear has eyes now.
Streak day #1871
Another. Man I can see why I left these as the last ones, they're way worse
Streaking day 1141: More colors!
Day 4: 3 more built, 1 more in the unit
Day 46: Spent a few mins doing a quick edge highlight on the backpack before running off to my shift. Gonna redo on my day off tomorrow.
Day 45: more Orc work.
Day 1141, broke the serpent folk off her base first thing. Glued her back on, painted the base, did some cleanup
Day 124, playing around with wet blending & layering this demon sword
Day 45: at long last the spear is glued!
Day 745, working on fetlocks and tail
Oh are they the newer elves with skulls instead? That looks sick
Yea i also have planned to make the elf spearmen as ghouls and the archers as ghosts. speaking of which how do you paint your ghost?
That's cool. I have some old Bretonian man at arms I was thinking of throwing skulls on to be some skeletons.
I zenithal prime in warm grey, hit all the fabric folds with reikland flesh shade. Then I do cross hatching all over with a light warm grey to get fabric texture.
After that it's baal red contrast, then flesh tearers and finally blood for the blood god to build up the blood leaking through fabric look
So, question for everyone on a long hobby streak. What do you do when a vacation with flights is upcoming? How do you make sure your streak continues when you’ll be out of the house for a week plus?
Streak day #1872
Special weapons day
I have a little zip up case with foam that I can put some minis, paints and a brush in. It goes in a backpack just fine I'll take that along when I have to be away on a trip
Streaking day 1142: More basecoats
Day 46: Trying to close out this group. Not enjoying it at all.
Day 5 rest of the sword masters and the hero built
Day 125, more 🗡️🗡️🗡️
Day 44: straightened the spear, it was a little bent. Also applied primer in multiple places where the paint was flaking. I never had a miniature flaking so much, I guess my primer went bad (it's a 6-year bottle of Vallejo primer)
Documentation for me; I have folders of world info for games that I write on, and I count that for my general streak. I have brought paints and/or primer with me for trips where I know I'll have downtime in, but when I'm camping in BC, that's not really a viable option 😄
Day 54: 5 min just to keep the streak alive
Day 47: Went downstairs to paint, managed to make a start on the leather pouches and got stung by a wasp. No photos today unless the fucker pisses off.
@chrome arrow For me it depends on the trip. If I have travel via plane or a long drive I take a book about painting or sculpting. I also pack some minis that may need sanding and filling, so I pack a scraper and sanding sponge, and some filling compouond. If it is a prolonged trip I might pack some paints, brushes and a dry pallette. I have also collected basing materials, such as fine sand at a beach, or maybe plants or rocks or natural sponges. I have also done some photography when planning a diorama. I was studying waves for a sea fight. There are lots of choices. Basically did youo do something that pertains to the hobby that will improve your minis?
Day 1142. I broke the chain, again. Glued it, did some painting on the rest of it
The bastard pissed off (after expediting its return to God). Take that you undemocratic bug!
That means photo:
Day 746, started on a colorful chick
Sting or no sting, momma didn’t raise no quitter.
Streak day #1873
Sergeant. I never noticed these guys had a bionic arm before
Streaking day 1143: basecoats done
Day 45: painted over the white primer patches from yesterday.
Day 6: just some pondering about the colour scheme for the undead
Day 126, Crowe’s eyes and a few touch-ups
Day 48: Watched Zumikito and declared war on wasps. Already nuked the garage (where I paint) with wasp killer and repellent. Also bought 10 wasp traps and have placed them around backyard. The small vent holes for wasps to get in have been sprayed. I am an Aussie, I shall not yield.
Looking good
Day 47: Didn’t leave much time for myself today. Worked on the metallics.
Day 1143, broke off the scythe again, glued it, broke it again, glued it again, did a little painting
Day 55: Not much but kept the streak alive
Day 747, picked out some bases, clipped them, scraped them, and cemented them in prep for some priming.
Day 127, Busy day, so getting a little painting time in now, trying out a couple ways to make the cracks in the rocks on the base look like the warp is seeping through.
Streak day #1874
Almost done with this squad
Streaking day 1144: testing out colors
Day 7: due to decimating my sleep schedule for a day i was only able to watch some painting videos
Day 1144, almost there, I need to be done with this mini, hopefully I won’t break it again
Day 46: started work on the head
Day 56. Another 5 min for the streak.
Day 48: Finished Orc.
@chrome arrow just 😮
Thanks! They’re a lot of fun to paint.
@tidal willow I think you’ve shorted yourself a couple days on your streak.
Day 49: Back to it
Day 748, primed the stuff from yesterday. Slight challenge: the jar I had mixed up some primer in (for travelling last month) has set up into slightly greasy mostly solid. Added some water and a little of the water known as Vallejo white, and was able to get some sort of gray out of it, but we'll have to see how it sticks. Thankfully these are just HIPS meh junk models to me.
indeed, the last one should have been 48. thanks!
Streak day #1875
Went to a concert today so came back pretty tired and only half cleaned this guy
Day 49: spent a minute to make sure my very small unit of Boyz ranks up. Also added matte varnish to some of those that I’d missed.
Streaking day 1145: did washes
Day 8: primed and batch painted red fabric. Any suggestions on the armor color? Im thinking on purple right now
@wanton lichen depends on how you want to go. Adobe has a free color scheme generator you can use to see how your colors look together. You can choose different schemes like analogous, triad, square, custom. I find it helpful. Your can load an image and extract a color scheme.
Day 1145, started varnishing
If you find a reference image, you can use this app I wrote some time ago to convert it to paints. many brands are available. -> https://ricbit.github.io/aicrilex/
Day 128, ribbons 🎀
Day 49: this face is as good as I can make in 28mm scale.
Day 57. Highlight sketching for the streak. Also spent about an hour cleaning mold lines and sprue nubs.
Day 50: Special day, both because it’s half way to 100 but also because it’s my birthday! Mainly just cleaning highlights on this blueberry.
Did also mess around with some slap chop to help a person out on a different server.
Day 749, worked on her bird and her shawl today
Streak day #1876
Did 3 today. Squad finished and started on the next. This sergeant was fucked, mould slip made his legs off by maybe half a mm
Day 62+19
Ongoing on several proyects. The last one is building some minis and bases. Also primming several others. Multitasking it is.
Streaking day 1146: varnished the orks
Day 9: tried adobe and some color cards but in the end i tried mixing bone white and toxic yellow and it was a nice colour, like a worn out white
Day 50: an accident with glue, I'll spend the night trying to save the already painted face.
129: primed this thing 😳
Day 1146, finished these 2
Day 51: Short break from my favourite blueberry and cleaned up my 1/16 scale face today. First time doing a face and first time working at a larger scale.
Day 50: worked on the chains on this big fella.
Day 58. Marathon session; practicing with a larger brush.
Day 750, volunteered with setup for our local con, and did a little shading on the supporting beam
