I think the mental block I mentioned last time is more specifically not knowing how to deal with things idk how to paint :p I'll just force myself, and check tutorials when available.
The motivational part of my brain can be kind of a baby sometimes and I don't want to be beholden to it

Nice, I'm not good with oil washes yet but I really appreciate the extra control. I inherited a box of water-washable oil paints from a friend moving away. It's hit or miss but sometimes an oil wash seems to look far, far better than standard washes, probably because of the smooth transitions from very dark to very light?

These are two of my favorite pieces. The filthy cloth is from a thick pooling oil wash, and the beholder got more or less automatically shaded by being bright yellow and then applying and removing a red brown wash. I've also tried straight black on a couple minis, hoping it'd look like darkest dungeon, and that was more of a struggle

Streaking Day 370, I finished preparing the terrain, I started painting, I'm still going to work on it, but I placed the minis provisionally to get an idea of ​​how things are going

Day 846, started base coating the flytraps, touched up the primer on the brachiosaurus

I think the oils might have better transitions because of longer working times and maybe even how most people apply them. For example, for the models in my photo, I applied a gloss varnish prior to the oils so that the oils would flow more easily into the recesses where I need them. Next, I applied Scale75 oil wash all over (they looked hella dirty), and after 20 minutes, did the white spirit wipe down method very carefully from top to bottom with those tiny eye makeup brushes; I wanted to mimic natural shadowing and to remove staining from the armor panels and other large surfaces. I think all of these things helped produce a smoother gradient. Next, I used matte varnish to kill that gloss look, which also reduces its ability to reflect light. When looking at the mini, there will be fewer light reflections on the model, which allows for higher definition and less distraction. Your eyes can focus on the natural contrast….

That's pretty much what I do except the gloss. I really like the marco frisoni technique though I haven't fully worked out how to do it quickly without an airbrush.

I still want to correct some things in the painting of the terrain, I need to touch up some areas where I needed to level it to suit the mini, I also need to touch up some of the painting of the minis, I will still work for another two sessions to finish.

The insurance people are dummies and mixed up so now a new man with wind machines is here to replace the current wind machines that were here. Luckily we wont be charged for it

@obsidian estuary sorry that is going on, I remember 2weeks of the heavy duty fans, throwing away a roomful of possessions due to mold, wall board cut out 18 inches above any evidence of mold (all but about the top 10 cm gone, the refrigerator sank into the ruined floor, then the reconstruction. In the end the house was better for it. Watch out for the trick of using the wrong finish on the cupboards, they look great, then a year later go milky. I can never remember if it should be varnish or lacquer or whatever , investigate what should be used. Hang in there

Hopefully it's not that bad, we got it shut off pretty quickly. Everything from the linen cupboard needs washing after using it all to absorb the floor water.

They're back on Tuesday to see how the drying is going, if all goes well the machines will handle it but there might have to be some drilling and cutting happen to allow air circulation in the floor space.
Only a few minor appliances were flooded so it could be much worse, if no one was home when it happened it could have been catastrophic.

It's been a much bigger challenge than I expected when I started. 😅 I don't want it to lose its cartoon style and I'm constantly trying to contain myself in the process, but there's the idea that it's a drawing going from 2D to 3D and it's hard to get lost with the volumes and the fire everywhere, especially from the bottom up, which makes it difficult to locate the light and shadow. Let's see how it turns out in the end.

Ive tried to emulate 2d in 3d a few times and some parts definitely don't translate easy. Cellshady outlines can work but there's no concept of an 'outline' when you can rotate the mini. And some art uses flat areas for a striking look, like darkest dungeon eyes, but in minis that tends to just look "unpainted" in my experience

Streaking Day 379, Today's hobby activity was a little different. I noticed that my compressor had some oil around the outlet hose to the reservoir (the black rubber one). It is an oil-powered compressor with a refrigerator motor. Although I didn't identify anything that could explain the leak, I decided to replace the hose. It is already a little old, about 15 years old, and I had already replaced this hose about 5 years ago and had enough for another change, so that's what I did for today.

Day 131 and 132: Been doing a bit of home construction over this weekend as I installed a rack to hold my paints, and then realized that while the Citadel sized pots would fit perfectly, the smaller ones like Reaper, Vallejo and Two Thin Coats would slide around quite a bit. So, designed and started printing pot holders to fit onto the shelves.

That looks great! You should look into hue shifting some time, where shadow-mid-highlught move around the color wheel a bit. It let's you do things like show that some parts of the face are more flushed or show lighting temperature

I'd say the short version is

• have warmer shadows and cooler highlights (looks like cool lighting), or cool shadows and warm highlights (looks like warm lighting)
• pick something other than black and white to mix with your main tone to make the shadows and highlights, or add another color as well as black/white
• for things like skin, starting with reddish tones and then painting more typical skin colors on top can look realistic with little effort.

And when I change my mind and don't like a highlight color or something, you can pretty easily just glaze over it and shift the hue back toward the midtone

Day 476, playing around with basing and a little with a roller. Not sure how easy this will be to cut/trim up for a base, we'll see. Also, I am reminded how weak my grip strength is when trying to work greenstuff. Ugh 😦

Not to push you one way or another, but with a bit of creativity hobbying can take up a relatively small footprint. For instance on the couch while my kids watch TV, I'll trim minis off the sprue and do cleanup on parts, or do drybrushing on terrain--neither activity needs great light or posture to do. You can also get like a cheap toolbox or makeup box, throw in the paints needed for a particular mini, then toss down some newspaper or a rag and paint on the kitchen table, or take it to a FLGS.

I got a portable lamp for Reapercon last year and it works great for those time when I don't want to paint at my desk

Mounted this shelf I had purchased for a different space, only to find that the seller listing on Amazon had the dimension orders mixed from what I was expecting. Instead of a 8.75in. wide shelf, I got one 8.75in tall that was too wide for the space. Can't say I love where it's mounted, or the depth of it, but frankly dealing with returns is bad enough, and that's before considering that the box showed up with openings completely torn up and some unidentified substance caking the outside. So onto the wall it went. I've got desktop racks for my standard Reaper/AP/S75 bottles, but my odds and ends that I don't use so much... The Kimeras fit great -- I can do them two deep, albeit without visibility to the back one so well. Everything else fits less well, and I'm still left with a couple bottles on the table, but maybe I can make or find something for the original intended space. Pretty happy to at least clear up and organize a little more.

I liked the Troll, if you'll allow me to give my opinion, I think that painting the runes on the forearms and horns with an orange fluo would give an interesting effect, maybe those spikes on the elbows could also have the same effect.

Out of interest did you treat the wood in any way?

I put it in the oven for 20 minutes, then I applied cyanoacrylate glue to protect the tree bark.

That's what I did with mine too. It's definitely got a little guy living in it though. I get tiny piles of dust around the base of the wood

Try to locate the hole where the dust is coming out and apply alcohol or even some insecticide with a syringe.

love the colored brick! Did you do that with green stuff / some kind of modeling clay? I wanted to ask how you got your surfaces to look so brick-like, it's something I struggled with

@wet anchor I cheated of course, I covered some bases with epoxy resin clay, I bought some texture rollers some time back and just rolled it across the surface. Then trimmed it up nice, smoothed the edges and let it dry

that is smarter than trying to mold individual bricks on a base for sure

I was going for "long-crumbled kingdom" so wanted like, one or two bricks poking out of mud and grass, so figured it was quickest to do it all with texture paste and greenstuff

but after all that effort I've also seen people make toppers and rollers that do the same kind of thing too

The two in the back right feel like they have a little more pop because of the contrast between the light green moss/grass and the darkened ground but honestly just feels like a different in light due to the angle or something. The bases look nice, they're very colorful and a bit whimsical and so fit well with the models

$50 (or local equivalent) for a box with 3-4 minis in it is crazy true, creeping up to GW prices. But at the same time, you only need 2 boxes to play, so unless you want to collect everything, can be a relatively cheap game to get into. Also the starter sets is one of the best starter box values ever imho, you get terrain, 4 squads of guys, dice, rulers, and all the tokens and paraphernalia for ~$100-$120.

You can do it! One day at a time. from personal experience I can say, it helps to have some simpler things (models that just need a bit of touch up, or things to assemble, doing a single base) to do for those times when you just don't have the energy or the time
